The Best of 2025!

It's down to just Mike (whiplash1972) and myself doing "Best of" lists, so we decided to expand them to a Top 10 list.

After much whining from people having to wade through the "Rest of the Field" section, I've changed the page up a bit. That section is still there if people want to reference it, but it is collapsed by default.

For both of us, the listing contains 3 parts:

  1. The Rest of the Field. There is nothing qualitative about this section; the releases may range from good to mediocre to complete and utter garbage. It only exists to show you what each of us considered in coming up with our Top 10 and Honorable Mentions. If an album isn't listed in our Top 10, Honorable Mentions, or Rest of the Field, it means we didn't get a chance to hear that album. We don't all listen to the same set of releases each year.
  2. Honorable Mentions. Very good releases for the year that either fell just short of the top 10.
  3. Top 10. Self-explanatory.

Honorable Mentions

Barnabas Sky — Over the Horizon. Really solid effort showcasing numerous lead vocalists. This one got a bunch of play throughout the year. Standout track: The Sign of the Wolf featuring Danny Vaughn.

Creeper — Sanguivore II, Mistress of Death. A heavier and less synth-laden Sisters of Mercy meets Meat Loaf. I wish I had discovered this band earlier, as their material is very enjoyable. Standout track: Title Track.

Edgeland — Tunnels. Swedish modern hard rock band, some might say melodic metal. Crunchy, yet great choruses. Standout track: The Release.

Eisbrecher — Kaltfront!. As much as I love me some vintage Rammstein, I prefer a little less industrial and a bit more rock/metal, e.g., Schattenmann. This release really fills the bill for me. Band's been around 20+ years. Standout track: Waffen Waffen Waffen.

First Light — Elemental. Well executed, if not a bit play-by-numbers AOR. Solid vocals and choruses. Standout track: Mayday.

Ginevra — Beyond Tomorrow. Sophomore album from this Swedish band. Continues pretty much in the same vein as the debut. Standout track: True North.

Inglorious — V. Well this was a pleasant unexpected surprise, given that the band called it quits in 2023. Original lead vocalist returns for this one. Standout track: Testify.

Kim Wilde — Closer. The Kids in America singer putting out a fantastic album was not on my 2025 bingo card, but she sounds amazing for 65. For fans of '80s melodic pop. Standout track: Scorpio.

Lord Of The Lost — OPVS NOIR Vol. 1. Part one of a 2-part album, IMO it holds up better than the second part. I really like this first half. Very heavy and yet melodic. A number of guests/duets throughout. Standout track: I Will Die in It.

Mad Invasion — Crack In The Sky. Really solid melodic hard rock from yes, another Swedish band. The ballads shine on this release IMO. Standout track: Master of Sorrow.

Madhouse — Plead the Fifth. Motley Crue for a modern age? Superbly produced and executed sleaze glam. Standout track: Shotgun Rider.

Majestica — Power Train. I love me some Tommy Johansson. I hadn't realized he left Sabaton to focus on Majestica. The effort was worth it! Old school Euro power metal in the Stratovarius vein. Standout track: A Story in the Night.

Memories Of Old — Never Stop Believing. Feeding the power metal flames yet again. Extremely polished and lushly orchestrated, but the allure is the lead vocals IMO. Great range! eminds me of the very first Arion album. Standout track: Fly Away Together.

Memory of a Melody — Valves & Chambers. A fantastic mix of the heavy and the melodic. Some may not like the use of harsh vocals sprinkled throughout, but they tend not to be dominant. Well worth checking out IMO. Standout track: One Nation.

Nighthawk — Six Three 0. One of the better "classic rock" sounding releases out there, with a bit of a Night Flight Orchestra flair (well, duh considering the lead vocalist is from NFO). Standout track: Can't Say Goodbye.

Ollie Wride — The Pressure Point. Extremely radio-friendly light AOR. Very melodic, with plenty of retro synthwave elements. Standout track: Wish You Well.

Sabaton — Legends. Has there been any war this band hasn't made an album about? Dunno, but it's one again solid and bombastic power metal. Standout track: Crossing the Rubicon.

Set It Off — ST. Reminds me quite a bit of Falling in Reverse, with elements of rap, harsh metal, and yet melodic choruses. Standout track: Rotten.

Smash Into Pieces — ArmaHeaven. Another modern hard rock effort that mixes the modern melodic pop with driving hard rock. This album almost made my top 10. Really good stuff! Standout track: Rage. Bonus selection: A collab with Within Temptation not on the album, Somebody Like You.

Surrender The Crown — Travails. Excellent melodic metal, the lead singer reminds me a lot of David Draiman from Disturbed. Standout track: Belong.

Dan's Winners

10th Place

cover Andy and the Rockets — Casino (Dalapop). Not on one of the usual suspect record labels, so may have been overlooked by a lot of folks. Album produced and co-written by Erik Martensson (Eclipse). Scandi melodic rock at its finest, with obvious comparisons to H.E.A.T and Eclipse, but also a bit more varied, with the vocals having a bit of a "twang" in places that sets it apart from the norm in the Scandi vein.

9th Place

cover Darktribe — Forgotten Reveries (Scarlet Records). I was surprised that this album got virtually no notice in the HH community, as it is right up our alley IMO. Fourth album from this French band, slightly progressive melodic hard rock. Great choruses and subtle but effective use of keyboards throughout. Great replay value IMO.

8th Place

cover Nicklas Sonne — Electric Dreams (Frontiers Records). In all candor, this probably should have been higher in my top 10. A true one-man operation, all vocals and instruments on this album were performed by Nicklas. The vocals are the prime attraction, but the man is no slouch on guitar. Some excellent use of humor as well, the song Epic Song perfectly summing up the state of online music creation in 2026, and his Helldivers Anthem is just stuperb.

7th Place

cover Dynazty — Game of Faces (Nuclear Blast). Their 2020 album The Dark Delight was my #2 album for that year. Now with Nuclear Blast Records, this is the ninth studio album from this Swedish hard rock band, and once again they don't disappoint! Bombastic and polished hard rock, and as usual Nils Molins' vocals are the signature component. If I had one complaint it would be that the songs are too dang short! Just when you get into them, they're done.

6th Place

cover Rob Moratti — Sovereign (Avalon Records). I'll admit that I've always enjoyed Rob's vocals, including his work in Final Frontier and Rage of Angels, while at the same time recognizing that some find his tone to be too thin and/or nasal. Like many voices, you either love it or hate it. Put me in the former group, especially as his voice has become more full and rounded over time as the emphasis isn't solely on high-range content. This is an extremely well produced slice of AOR with fantastic replayability. It's lush and every song is extremely enjoyable.

5th Place

cover Battle Beast — Steelbound (Nuclear Blast). As I was listening to this album and crafting my list for the year, I had no idea that this would be the swan song for the group as currently comprised, as the band announced that lead vocalist Noora Louhimo has amicably left the bend to focus on her solo career. But what a note to go out on! This brand of bombastic/epic melodic power metal is right up my alley. It's metal, but head-boppable (if that's a thing). One of my favorite tracks actually has jazz elements, the insanely unique Twilight Caberet.

4th Place

cover Streetlight — Night Vision (Frontiers Music). Their debut album was my #2 album of 2023, and this sophomore album does not disappoint, just falling a hair behind the first one. Just a superb slice of melodic AOR once again, with the same hooks, right out of the late 1970s-early 80s. Lush production, great use of keys, and everpresent vocal harmonies make for great replayability.

3rd Place

cover Amorphis — Borderland (Reigning Phoenix). Probably not standard listening fare for most HH members, but this blend of clean and harsh vocals (primarily the former) over melodic metal works incredibly well, this time with a bit of synthwave added in places. The musicality of the arrangements is top notch, allowing both the vocals and instruments to shine at appropriate places. There are quite a few radio-friendly toe-tapping moments, which one wouldn't necessarily expect. Production is extremely lush and polished. This album is far more "accessible" to non-Amorphis fans than any of their previous works IMO.

2nd Place

cover Midnite City — Bite the Bullet (Pride & Joy Music). Well this was unexpected... their previous efforts were solid, but this one takes it to a whole new level IMO. The Def Leppard/Blue Tears/Sleeze Beez gang choruses really make this album work. I've also seen comparisons to Danger Danger. The album is extremely polished; I've seen some remarks online saying it's TOO polished, but I don't think that's a thing. The album is unapologetically late 1980s, with all the glitz and glam of the era. Virtually all the songs on the album could have been heard on the airwaves back in the day. 100% recommended!

Dan's Pick for Heavy Harmonies 2026 CD of the Year

cover Ghost — Skeleta (Loma Vista Recordings). This album has been my #1 album of the year since it released. While extremely varied stylistically from song to song, it is 100% a love letter to AOR and hard rock of the 1970s and 1980s. What really grabs me is the guitar work and tone. The solos are so damned tasty, yet not overly shreddy or inappropriate for the songs... completely "tasteful" for lack of a better word. I find it interesting that many longtime Ghost fans really DON'T like the album, as it distances the band even further from their doomish satanic metal (parody?) roots, and that it's too polished. There are SO many AOR and classic rock riffs, tones, and chord sequences that every song harkens back to different bands we would here when FM radio actually existed (or when MTV actually played music). This might indeed be your grandfather's Ghost, but I'm here for it!

Honorable Mentions

Bryan Adams — Roll With the Punches. After several lackluster studio releases, this was a nice return to form for Mr. Adams, and a very pleasant surprise. Standout track: Life Is Beautiful

Animalyze — Powerhouse. With a sound that's a mixture of Kiss and 80s Def Leppard, here comes Denmark's Animalyze. A solid debut that shows alot of potential, and should appeal to most who frequent HH. Standout track: Kings of the Night

Black Spiders — Cvrses. My favorite release so far from UK rockers Black Spiders. Well done hard rock from start ot finish. Standout track: Sorry, Not Sorry

Buckcherry — Roar Like Thunder. Buckcherry are one of my favorite groups of all time, and once again have brought listening pleasure to my lobes. Not on the same level as some of their previous releases, but still a damn fine effort. Standout track: Set It Free

Cheap Trick — All Washed Up. Their best release since 2016's "Bang Zoom Crazy...Hello". For a band that's never seemed overly fond of their biggest hit, "The Flame", they sure do the slower numbers well, with The Best Thing being a real standout.

Dangerous Toys — Demolition. A collection of demos from back in the day that would fit perfectly between "Hellacious Acres" and "Pissed". Check out Back Street Girl.

Ellefson-Soto — Unbreakable. A much better, vastly more listenable effort than their 2022 debut, "Vacation in the Underworld". Great hard rock / melodic metal throughout. Standout track: The Day We Built Rome

Giant — Stand and Deliver. Kent Hilli has become one of my favorite vocalists in the melodic rock genre, and his second go round with Giant does not disappoint. Standout track: It's Not Right.

Harem Scarem — Chasing Euphoria. Another fine addition to the Harem Scarem discography that will please fans of the band. Check out Better the Devil You Know

H.E.A.T. — Welcome To The Future. Admittedly, I'm a bigger fan of the Erik years, but this is a very nice collection of AOR/melodic rock. Very strong, and just missed my top 10. Standout track: Bad Time for Love.

Helloween — Giants & Monsters. Easily my favorite metal release of 2026. The pumpkins united have delivered another outstanding slab of German metal, with several first rate tracks such as... This Is Tokyo.

The Night Flight Orchestra — Give Us the Moon. While 2017's "Amber Galactic" remains my favorite release from the NFO, this is another great addition to their discography. Retro AOR fans will find a lot to love here! Standout track: Like the Beating of Heart.

Smith/Kotzen — Black Light/White Noise. Much like the Ellefson-Soto release from above, I find the second effort from Smith / Kotzen to be a much better all round listening experience. Standout track: Outlaw.

Luke Spiller — Love Will Probably Kill Me Before Cigarettes and Wine. Wonderful solo debut from The Struts frontman Luke Spiller, which, of course, sounds alot like The Struts, but it's the "poppier" side for sure. Very enjoyable! Standout track: Title Track.

Sven Gali — Live At The El Mocambo. Excellent live set drawing entirely from their self titled 1992 debut except for a cover of Motorhead's "Ace of Spades" and the closing track "Hurt" which featured on their 2020 EP "3". Highly recommended for fans of the band! Standout track: Tie Dyed Skies.

Tributes — Magic Power — An All-Star Tribute to Triumph. Over the years, tribute discs have proven to be very hit or miss, with most having 2-3 decent songs, and the rest being head scratchers; not this one! With an all star cast of musicians, and vocalist selections that actually make sense in relation to the chosen songs, this is a truly excellent tribute to the Canadian power trio, Triumph! I particularly enjoy Mickey Thomas' rendition of... Spellbound.

Van Halen — Live in Dallas 1991. Van Halen's legendary free outdoor performance from the F.U.C.K. tour in 1991 does not disappoint. A wonderful piece of Van Halen history with Eddie and company hitting on all cylinders! Standout track: Poundcake.

Wang Chung — Live at the El Mocambo. Wang Chung were definitely more than 2 hit wonders, and this live set from June 2024 illustrates just that! These pop / new wave veterans still sound wonderful. Standout track: To Live and Die in L.A.

Mike's Winners

10th Place

cover W.E.T — Apex (Frontiers Music). 2021's Retransmission ranked at number four in my "best of" list for that year, and JSS and friends have followed it up with another excellent release. While I probably still prefer that one just a bit, this is another STRONG effort from one of melodic rock's most consistent groups of the last fifteen+ years. Hopefully we will continue to hear high quality releases from W.E.T. for many years to come.

9th Place

cover Aerosmith and Yungblud — One More Time (Capitol Records). My only gripe with this release is that we only got an EP, and not a full album, of new music featuring the Toxic Twins. This is a wonderful collaboration between Aerosmith and rising English star Yungblud, with each side adding their distinctive style to the songs, without overshadowing the other. "My Only Angel" and "Wild Woman" are two of my favorite tracks from 2025! We can only hope that the success of this EP leads to one more full album before Steven and Joe decide to hang it up for good

8th Place

cover Mammoth WVH — The End (BMG Records). On The End, the immensely talented Wolfgang Van Halen continues to find and refine his own sound, which is a mixture of modern hard rock, with a large dash of classic Van Halen. This one would probably rank a bit higher in my top ten, but the quality of the disc does tail off somewhat in the second half. Still, with that said, it also featured one of my absolute favorite songs of 2025 in "I Really Wanna"; a middle finger aimed straight at his detractors, and perhaps one specifically. ;-)

7th Place

cover Dorothy — The Way (Roc Nation). 2022's Gifts From the Holy Ghost was my introduction to hard rock songstress Dorothy, with that disc finishing just outside my top five that year. Three years later, she has returned with an effort I enjoy just as much, if not a little more. In a releatively short time, she has managed to position herself amongst my favorite active female rockers: Taylor Momsen (The Pretty Reckless), Janet Gardner, Chez Kane, and Emily Armstrong (Linkin Park). If you've never checked her out before, I highly recommend the following tracks...

6th Place

cover Ghost — Skeleta (Loma Vista Recordings). 2022's Impera was previously my favorite Ghost release, but it has now been supplanted by the extraordinary Skeleta. A delight to listen to from start to finish, with "Cenotaph" and "Umbra" being the only tracks that don't overly excite me (although they're both still above average songs). Papa V Emeritus (aka Tobias Forge) and the Nameless Ghouls have fully realized their potential here, and give us one of the best albums of the year! If by some chance you haven't already listened to this wonderful release, check out the following:

5th Place

cover Thundermother — Dirty and Divine (AFM Records). For some reason, unbeknownst to me, this is actually the first release from Thundemother that I've ever picked up. I'm in the process of rectifying that situation now, as I absolutely LOVE Dirty & Divine! Big, catchy, sing along choruses combined with AC/DC influenced hard rockers make this one helluva an enjoyable listen. They're not reinventing the wheel here, but there's no need to when the songs are this memorable. One of my most listened to CDs of the year!

4th Place

cover Ray of Light — Salute (Baysis Media). Featuring several past/current Frontline members, Ray of Light has arrived on the melodic hard rock scene, and given us a spectacular debut in "Salute". This one released fairly early in 2025, and I found myself returning to it over and over throughout the year. If you're a fan of the aforementioned Frontline, or just great, catchy melodic rock in general, I highly recommend this one. Here are two of my favorite songs of 2025...

3rd Place

cover Gotthard — Stereo Crush (Reigning Phoenix Music). After Steve Lee's untimely passing in 2010, Gotthard were left with the unenviable task of deciding whether or not to carry on, and if so, who can we bring in on vocals? They chose to move forward with Nic Maeder, and I believe at this point, he's proven himself to be worthy of not replacing Steve Lee (who really could?) but of carrying on Steve's legacy in the band. Stereo Crush is the band's best effort since 2014's Bang!, and in my opinion, the best release to feature Nic on vocals. So many great songs on this one, with the following being probably my two favorites...

2nd Place

cover Perfect Plan — Heart of a Lion (Frontiers Music). I hopped on the Perfect Plan bandwagon fairly recently with 2022's Brace For Impact being my first purchase from them, but then I immediately went back and grabbed their previous releases, as they are quite simply an excellent melodic rock band. With "Heart of a Lion", their string of stellar releases continues, with this one being the best so far, and would have been my number one of the year if not for a certain group of veteran rockers. ;-) . Between his solo albums, Giant, and Perfect Plan, Kent Hilli is on one helluva win streak, and I always look forward to hearing what he does next. If for some strange reason you've never given Perfect Plan a listen, check out the following...

Mike's Pick for Heavy Harmonies 2025 CD of the Year

cover Treat — The Wild Card (Frontiers Music). This one came along late in the year, and pretty much stayed put in my CD player all the way through the end of December. In a word, WOW! I honestly didn't think they could better 2010's Coup de Grace, but I'll be damned, I think they may have done it. Massive hooks, catchy sing along choruses, and memorable tunes galore can be found on The Wild Card, along with many of the best songs of 2025. If by some chance you haven't grabbed this one yet, what are you waiting for? This one is a literal TREAT for your auditory canals! ;-)
