Top notch AOR with an attitude. STYX has always been one of the biggest sounding rockbands on the globe. On "Pieces of Eight" they combine their rocksound with brilliant poppy influences. "Sing for the day" is a campfire one liner !

One of the all time greatest bands indeed and worth the high rating. This is their third best release after 'Equinox' and 'The Grand Illusion'. With tracks like 'Queen of spades' and 'Renegade', fantastic rockers, they reach a fantastic level ! Great stuff from an incredible band ! Together with the mighty Legs Diamond and Y&T this is top in music history !!! And now I'm waiting to slagged off, once again !

No, Freddy your right. I heard this record for the first time about five years ago and I didn't no that this kind of wonderfull music existed. The combination between bombastic melodies and pure rock&roll power is a winning formula. It teaches all those pretentious new wave bands you had at the time(Patti Smith,Ramones,Blondie etc.) how you play real rock&roll.

Superb except for Im Ok and sing for the day which are namby pamby bollocks. Renegade, Blue Collar Man, Queen of spades-3 of the greatest Styx songs ever.

This album was my introduction to hard rock back in 1978. I think I was 8 years old at the time. This is my all time favorite Styx album. Queen of Spades, Great White Hope and Renegade are classics. Still one of my favorite bands even today.

Same view with all of you, this album is among the best releases of the decade. However I think this album might better be categorized as progressive rock. Has nothing to do with AOR. Harmony is complex, sometimes songs are well developped to become pomp or epic and synths are used often to play leads and contributing to a progressive mood rather than creating catchy melodies and ''easy'' harmonies.

From: richb Date: November 19, 2004 at 7:37
This was my introduction to pomp some 25 years plus ago - possibly the greatest pomp rock album ever, it set the benchmark (which few have equalled) for many years to come. Still sounds as fresh and exciting as it did when I first heard it many moons ago.

In my opinion this one is where they started their corporate sellout phase. They were never the same from this point on.

From: Beto Date: February 4, 2005 at 20:20
Que buen disco con canciones como Blue Collar man, Sing for the day o Im ok donde Dennis hace un solo grandioso tocando un organo de iglesia. Fantástico.

From: richb Date: February 25, 2005 at 13:28
Sorry propane don't agree with you on this one. You can hardly call the likes of "Blue Collar Man, and "Renegade" "sell out material just classic rock tunes, I think you may be getting this album confused with "Cornerstone" which by comparison IS a sell out (though it still contains some great tunes).

From: AOR freaky Date: February 25, 2005 at 13:46
Blue Collar Man and Renegade are OUTSTANDING tracks, classic Styx stuff ! Propane, open your ears, mate !

From: Missing the 70's Date: August 7, 2005 at 11:54
Hard to find a better group back then. This was an excellent follow up to the Grand Illusion. This album made them my fav band. They have been ever since. Every song has something to appreciate. Another must have!!!

From: Ouwe Date: August 7, 2013 at 6:38
A classic one, great album.

From: underworld king Date: March 25, 2020 at 2:43
My favorite Styx LP. This is the album that got me, as an eight year old youngster, on the road to rock and later, heavy metal.
