Dennis DeYoung at his most pretentious! This was essentially that album(and tour) that broke Styx up in the first place. Its not as godawful as most people say it is, but its the last Styx album I would ever recommend.

In theory a cool idea. A concept album about the fight for rock&roll. The only problem is that rock&roll is totally absent on this album. It's a pity because the concept really rocks

Being a huge Styx fan, i remember buying this one and being really dissapointed after hearing it , compare this to 'Paradise Theater' or 'The Grand Illusion' and see what i mean. Nowadays it is still the worst Styx album bar non, although i still listen to 'Mr Roboto, 'Heavy Metal Poisoning and 'Haven't We Been Here', which give it a least some redeeming qualities. As Gar said , this lead to the big break up and you can see why!!!

What happens when you throw crap on the wall??? It STYX! My God what an awful release! What was Dennis Deyoung thinking, and how did the rest of the band allow this to happen to them?!?!?? LAME, LAME, LAME!

From: Jenni Date: November 20, 2003 at 3:23
I got one word...STYNX!

From: Waylon Date: June 30, 2004 at 3:24
I have to disagree with most of the comments here. I loved this album then and I still like it now. It is different than their other stuff but it still has it's moments.

From: Dean Date: June 30, 2004 at 10:39
Being a young pup when this came out- I loved it. It still brings back fond memeries of being 12 and thinking this was so cool-Memorised all the words and later learned all the riffs. I can see why most people hate it but i still love this album.

This was when our worst fears were confirmed: Styx had now sold out and were buckling under corporate pressure to join all the other pop bands for a strange electronically induced noise. This was when I said goodbye to them and did not look back.

From: Rockhead Date: December 2, 2004 at 2:49
From Pieces of Eight through to this Styx went from POMP legends to AOR guru's (much like Kansas in the same era). Styx are excellent regardless of genre. Sell Out? No they just showed the music world that they can compete-and make some serious dosh!!

From: Straycat Date: February 18, 2005 at 16:36
I just saw the video to Mr.Roboto... i had never heard the song or seen the vido before! All i can say is that both the song and video was HORRIBLE!!! This has to be the worst song i have EVER heard!!! If the rest of the album sucks just as much as this song, then I'd rather shave my long hair of than listen to that crap!!!!!!!

From: AOR freaky Date: February 19, 2005 at 4:11
It hurts me to say, but yes, this stinks ! Styx is one of my all-time fave bands and with albums like Equinox, The Grand Illusion, Pieces Of Eight etc. they released the VERY BEST STUFF ONE CAN IMAGINE, but this ? ! Forget it, it's not worth the Styx name !

From: poproxx2007 Date: May 21, 2006 at 2:14
what about "Don't Let It End"??? which in my opinion is the best song Styx ever did? Sure most of this is not as good as previous efforts but not to say anything about that song would be a criminal act. It is they're best especially if you like the more sensitive side of styx.

From: Remastered Reason Date: March 17, 2009 at 6:13
It was the early 80's when mechanical, synthesized dreck filled the airwaves. Unfortunatly, Styx managed to do their part & fit in. From all proper accounts, the band was in chaos during this time. This album has not dated well at all & is only relived for extreme nostalgic moments. However, "Don't Let It End" is probably the only redeeming tune worthy of repeat rotation.

From: rick kerch vzla Date: November 7, 2011 at 6:43
Mixed comments above about this being a crappy album or with some synthesized parts ect ect ect...probably Styx payed the price of all this early 80's sound where the new wave movement was strongly taking part and they just wanted to add some of it to their sound(for me this a power pop record and quite far away from the Pomp side that had characterized the band in the past)...well blaming Dennis is not the point like some stated above(as some people said Dennis was behind this idea of a concept album)...for me Dennis has always been one of the most popular yet underrated singers around and there's no complain about it IMO...pretentious???...probably he was...for a good cause or not???...who knows...this album has 2 sides of the coin as it was pretty popular in the States mainly for a couple of songs ("Mr Roboto" and the very nice one "Don't Let It End")in my case i add to those the very nice "Just Get Through The Night"(very nice indeed),"Double Life" & "Haven't We Been Here Before"(a

(continue from previews comment)..."Haven't We Been Here Before"(another nice shot)...like it or not this album marked a pre and a post in the career of Styx(for some people yes,for some people no)what do you think???...a matter of tastes guys,a matter of tastes...75/100

From: Doug Date: November 7, 2011 at 15:07
"Rick Kerch vzla", on your comments, I think the album did not translate to their live show very well. Mr. Roboto is such a bad song too. There are indeed some good songs on this one, but just a few. With DeYoung STYX' mission was toward melodic tunes, with Tommy Shaw it was (and now is with him at the steering wheel) more rockin.' To each his own, I guess. I thought together they were great but obviously differed on the direction of the band. Has to hurt a bit for DeYoung since he started the whole thing.

Opinions differ from good to bad or vice versa...cheers Doug!!!
