DESPITE THE FACT THAT TOMMY SHAW DOED NOT APPEAR ON THIS ALBUM, IT IS NOTHING SHORT OF BRILLIANT. THE BANDS WRITING ABILITIES SHOW A DIVERSE RANGE OF CLASIC ROCK BALLARDS TTYPICAL STYX ROCK & A COUPLE OF BAD BOY ROCK SONGS COMPLIMENTS OF GLEN BURTNIK. DENNIS DE'YOUNGS VOCALS IN 'SHOW ME THE WAY'&'CARRIANNE' WOULD GIVE ANYONE GOOSE BUMPS & MAYBE A TEAR IN THE EYE. BUT AT OTHER END OF THE SCALE,SOME OF THE HOT ROCK LICKS WOULD GET GRANDMA OUT OF HER SEAT.. GOTTA GET IT.

The only thing I remember about this (aside from hearing "Love Is The Ritual" a few times on the old syndicated Pirate Radio USA) was the incessant airplay of "Show Me the Way," the originnal version, the Desert Shielf version nd the Desert Storm version. Hmmmm. Wonder if they'll resurrect it, given current events.

Gran trabajo de Styx dentro de los cánones maás puramente melódicos ,Glen Burtnik sustituye correctamente a Tommy Shaw y las composiciones y la prodicción de Dennis De Young son maravillosas

Oh man the great memories with this disc. I remember hearing "Love Is The Ritual" without knowing it was Styx and thinking "I gotta check this new band out"..lol Burtnik added a cool element to this band by having his own distinct sound without trying to sound "Shaw-like". To me a disc has to stand the test of time for me and in 2004 I still listen to this every once in a while and still enjoy it so it's worth every penny to me. It's syrupy but I do love "Show Me The Way".

EXCELLENT disc. Glad to know that Show Me The Way was a popular hit, even until now. My favourites are Love At First Sight and Carrie-Ann.

Even without Tommy Shaw this lost none of it's greatness, and Tony is in right in that Burtnick always brought an edge to some of the tracks. (He ought to be pushed over that edge for the elements he's brought to his new album "Welcome to..." which is a pile of manure) Carrie-Ann is stunning, "Back to Chicago" is such a great way of closing the album. Some fillers: "World Tonite" sounds like INXS, "Not Dead Yet" and "Homewrecker" are standard fare, but generally this is great stuff 8.5/10.

Without reaching the majesty of the classic STYX albums, this piece do the job.BY the way,BWH'Indo' your bloody right!4 me the track "love at 1st sight"is superb and easily ranks among the best lightweight songs Denis ever composed!Every time i listen to it,makes my day!And i do believe this is the last great STYX album,so far.

Muy buen disco. La primera vez que escuche love is a ritual no podia creer que era el mismo grupo pero aqui se puede ver su gran versatilidad. Show me the way un nuevo clasico del grupo. Love At First Sight,Carrie Ann, All in a Day's Work y Edge of the Century otras de mis favoritas. La unicas que no me convence para nada son las dos ultimas.

Burtnick not trying to sound Shaw-like? Are you deaf or just ignorant? He was doing EVERYTHING to sound like Tommy. Pull your head out of your ass!!!!!!

I must say, a bloody good album. Not som much pompous as the earlier days, this one is more AOR. Burtnik certainly does a great job here (as always) and Dennis DeYoung has two amazing songs here namely "Show me the way" and "Love at first sight". If you liked "Paradise Theatre" you might not love this one, but if you liked Burtniks solostuff mixed with Dennis DeYoung's better moments, this is a winner! 9/10

In particular I love this record, I think it was very uneven, the best of my opinions are: Love Is The Ritual, Show Me The Way, Love At First Sight & Carrie Ann. Excellent production. 8.5/10

A more rocking oriented album thanks to the inclusion of Glen Burtnik ...ok,the great Tommy Shaw is not here but musically talking the band offered a very solid sound and with a very clean production added this album has become one of the most intereting Styx releases of all time(at least for me)...if not listen to these tracks:"Love Is The Ritual"(outstanding!),"Show Me The Way"(beautiful song and nowadays a mega-classic),"Edge Of The Century","Love At First Sight"(nice),"Not Dead Yet"(it rocks),"Carrie Ann"(beautiful & in the same league of Show Me The Way) & "Homewrecker"(fantastically rocks)...if these tracks don't mean anything to you then u need an ear doctor immeadiately ...Dennys DeYoung's superb as usual and the rest of the guys simply rock(Burtnik, the 2 Panozzo's brothers & Young)...96/100

I always liked the song "Love Is The Ritual," even though the bass is obviously a synthesizer, and sounds EXACTLY like the Yamaha keyboard I got for Christmas that year. For you young whippersnappers, or our many overseas friends, "Show Me The Way" sorta became the unofficial song of the first Gulf War, as there were a couple different versions getting airplay in the winter of '90/'91, with various soundbites mixed in: commentators talking about the news from Iraq and Kuwait, mostly, and some "regular people." There was a "Desert Shield" version, and then, after war was official declard on 1/16/91, there was a "Desert Storm" version with different clips. This is the main (only?) reason this song (and the album by extension) did so well. I think the song went to #3 on the Hot 100 charts, a pretty unlikely feat, because I can assure you all, nobody gave a shit about Styx in 1991. The follow-up single, "Love At First Sight" even did okay, went to #25, despite being totally forgettable.

The thing that jumps out at me now is that the whole "Show Me The Way" thing didn't seem to strike anybody as particularly "jingoistic" or "nationalistic" or "warmongering" or whatever. Anybody coming out with something like that just ten years later would've been immediately crucified.

Doghouse - for some more Styx trivia... the new dude Glen Burtnik who wrote and sang 'Love is the Ritual' got Styx to rock out a bit, as opposed to those elevator-muzak, limp-crooning-balladeer, Broadway-style stuff Dennis DeYoung insisted on writing and singing. 'Ritual' hit #80 on the charts in 1990 and was the only song I cared for on that album. I remember seeing the rest of the band in a interview about the the DeYoung concept album 'Kilroy Was Here' (1983), where the future society is served by robots and DeYoung sang live on that tour while dressed as a Robot. The other members of the band said they knew the band was over when 11 year old kids where coming up to them telling them that the track 'Mr. Roboto' was cool. You can now find DeYoung's solo career crooning with his versions of STYX oldies, and Tommy Shaw,James Young and Co. touring as STYX at your local Indian Casino.

Yeah, man, "Mr. Roboto" was godawful as a song, and then the whole album concept was just ridiculous, rock 'n' roll saving the world from the evil robots. Only cool if you're twelve. And yeah, if you've seen the Behind The Music episode on Styx, they pretty much blame everything that went wrong on Dennis DeYoung.

The first time I saw Styx live was on this tour in San Diego in July of 1991. It was a good show and Glenn Burtnik did a very good job filling in for Tommy Shaw. As for this album, I think it was ok but not near as impressive as their mid to late 70's music.

very good release for STYX ,tryin to put some elements in their music from the hair metal movement that was on at the moment!the result is ok ,as they manage to do it in a balanced way keeping their identity!Glenn is playing his role easily and the the production, songwriting ,musicianship are in a high level!"love is the ritual","all in a day s work" and "world tonite" are the highlights
