Heavy Harmonies Review
From: Dan Date: March 18, 2003 at 0:46
There are classics, and then there are CLASSICS. The original CD release of this album has been one of the most sought-after, rarest CD releases of the genre. Now that it's been reissued and I've been able to give it a listen, I can finally hear why. The ballyhoo is richly deserved! The personnel lineup reads like a who's who of westcoast AOR. The arrangements are rich, and all the songs are winners, with ultramelodic hooks galore! When you listen, you can hear Toto, Chicago, and a myriad of other westcoast AOR bands. When Heart released Alone as a hit single back in the 1980s (off Bad Animals), I never knew it was a cover of an I-Ten song. Now that I've heard the original, I'm wondering why it wasn't a monster for them...

If you are a fan of vintage westcoast AOR, you MUST pick up this disc! There are too many highlights to list, and in reality there isn't a weak track on the album. The production is very polished, the arrangements rich, and vocals harmonies abound. Pop this baby in the player and take a trip back in time to 1983, when the airwaves played real music!

Uno de los mejores discos AOR de la historia.Temas muy facilones pero con un gancho tremendo.DISCAZO.

From: Knuckles Date: July 8, 2002 at 12:24
Just a question. This cd is a cool piece,a bit mello but good listening. Track # 3 is the same song as what was made popular by Heart.Did these guys orignally do this track??. Second,Track #6 appears on REO THE HITS as a new studio track.Again, were these guys the orginal?.By the way,the verision of those 2 songs on here are very good.

Yep, you must own this album, no self respecting AOR fan should be without it. From the era we all love (the prime period of AOR, 1980-1989), this legendary release has all the hallmarks of a classic, with fabulous songs, breathtaking melody, and brilliant production by what was at the time the industry's best.. Keith Olsen. A classic!!

From: Ardian Date: April 7, 2004 at 3:38
Hmm, I haven't got this one yet but it seems that everyone here is saying a great thing about this. Can anybody give me a link where I can listen to some sound samples for this CD, please? Or should I just order it without listening to the samples?

From: Knuckles Date: April 7, 2004 at 7:51
Just order if you are looking for an AOR masterpiece

From: Ardian Date: April 8, 2004 at 1:04
OK then, I'll order it if it's still available. Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly... they are great songwriters... how can I go wrong with this?

From: warpigcat Date: June 11, 2004 at 14:12
Only "Alone" is worth the price. Buy or die. Perhaps the best ballad of all times.

ORIGINAL WRITERS ON MANY SONGS COVERED BY OTHER ARTISTS, Cold Look was done later by Honeymoon Suite, Alone by Heart and Crying I think or I don't want to lose you by Heart again. Many , many people have used these guys to create some magic.

I like this CD but it is far from a classic. Time to Say Goodbye is a very good song.

From: Rafo Phoenix Date: October 27, 2004 at 1:13
A VER A VER, OTRA MUY BUEN ALBUM DE AOR, UN ALBUM SUAVE Y CALMADO PERO DE HECHO MUY BUENO. MI TEMA FAVORITO DEL ALBUM ES I Don't Want to Lose You VERSIONADOS DESPUES POR LOS REO SPEEDWAGON. SI TE GUSTA EL AOR MAS SUAVE Y CALMADO ESTE ES TU ALBUM. BUENO A MI ME DESDE LOS CALMADOS COMO ESTE A LOS DEMOLEDORES COMO LOS DE STREETS O LOS ESCANDINAVOS. NOT A CLASSIC BUT IS A GOOD ALBUM.

From: Rafo Phoenix Date: October 27, 2004 at 1:17
THE SAME YEAR PREVIEW AND STREETS HAVE MORE GREAT ALBUMS THAN THIS. PREVIEW Y STREETS TIENE ESTE MISMO AÑO ALBUMS SUPERIORES Y CON MAS FUERZA QUE ESTE ESOS SI SON CLASICOS ABSOLUTOS DEL AOR. SALUDOS DESDE ICA-PERU

From: Geoff Date: September 16, 2005 at 8:38
Man is this soft! This is really not my kind of music, but I guess I have to admit this is pretty nice. Faves are 'Alone', 'I don't wanna lose you' and 'Pressing my luck'. But I guess all the songs range from okay to nice, except 'Lonely in each other's arms' which is the only one I don't like at all. As I say, this is a good CD for what it is, but I cannot picture many occasions I'd ever want to listen to music like this. For aquired tastes. I'd personally prefer Outside Edge or Sahara for AOR.

From: Swazi Date: September 17, 2005 at 17:26
Yeah, if you are a fan of the softer and romantic side of AOR then this is an album for you. I received my copy today and I like it very much. It is not easy to find, but it is worth the search. Nice melodies, great hooks, a phantastic voice, and - of course - an old classic like "Alone". My favourites are "Taking A Cold Look" and "I Don't Wanna Lose You".

The names of Kelly/Steinberg have been synonymous with many a great AOR song over the years, so a whole album full of stuff is pretty much heaven for most of us. 'Alone' as mentioned is better known as a Heart track, 'Taking A Cold Look' as a Honeymoon Suite song, and I must admit I prefer their versions to these, but that is probably due to familiarity rather than anything else. The line up of musos is incredible aswell-Most of the Toto guys, Pasqua (Giant, Van Stephenson), Belfield & Baird-

Richard Page (Mr.Mister) - brilliant stuff. My favourite track on this is definately 'Pressing My Luck', but all the others definately hit the mark. There is an air of familiarity about other tracks on here, aswell as the ones mentioned, but can't remember who covered which songs!!! Yes it is soft in places and won't be everyone's cup of tea, but for all the AOR/Westcoast fans out there this is pretty much essential stuff if you can track a copy down!!

The title track is a brilliant up-tempo opener of this excellent aor piece."Alone"is an awesome and emotional ballad,"Workin'for a lovin'"is the classic"funny"song(can't explain in english sorry ahaha)."Lonely in each other's arms"is for me the filler here, the followin'2 songs are among the best and"The easy way out"is also a good one. Also the last 2 songs are excellent,my rate here is 9/10.

This is ok, but listen what a good band like Honeymoon Suite made out of the song "cold look". Their version is two times better! This songs are a bit to poppy.

AWESOME AOR ALBUM!! This is one of those albums which defines the Lite AOR Term. I think the sounding of this album goes in the direction of the early AOR bands like ARCHANGEL(Cannata), BOSTON, PREVIEW, HONEYMOON SUITE, but with a very Westcoast Style, and the final result is an extraordinarie Lite AOR Album with gems like "Taking A Cold Look", "Lonely in Each Other's Arms" and the explosive "Quicksand"... One of the best early AOR albums, and maybe one of the best all time AOR records, nuff sai

From: DanDare Date: August 24, 2008 at 19:11
Number 4 (in no particular order) on my list of essential AOR listening. Every single track is a gem. From start to finsh. Honeymoon Suite covered 'Taking a Cold Look' and did an ok job although it's not too far from the original. Why 'Quicksand' hasn't been covered and turned into a massive hit I'll never understand. Buy it...... 100/100

From: rbrigade Date: November 8, 2008 at 10:10
Overrated till boredom. Half of the songs are lame nonsense poppy fillers. The other half is good. Alone is a great song, but thank God Heart covered it, cause their version is so much better...1,3,6,10 are the goodies. I like it when they rock a little bit, they have that special 70's feeling I like. But their pop side is just a waste of time. I'd rate it with 7/10

Ok how do i start this...we have a couple of talented songwriters (Kelly % Steinberg)they have written songs for luminaires such as Whitney Houston and Madonna 2 mention some...this album is great in composition and song writing but is it really a masterpiece???..i mean the album is perfect no doubt about it,good songs such as the opener "Taking A Cold Look","Quicksand" and "Alone" (probably the best track and nobody's secret that Heart cover it with a huge success even more than the original was suppossed 2 be)..anyway,as i said, good album, essential somehow 4 AOR lovers (the ones at heart)but that's it...just my personal opinion and of course respecting everybody else's comments).85/100

I can only agree with most comments above, this is an alltime classic, you won´t find a better pure AOR album, without a doubt a clear 100/100. The Rock Candy Reissue has an excellent remastering and a wonderful 4000 word essay by Dave Reynolds. A must have !!!

I-Ten - "Taking A Cold Look" is easily one of the most highly regarded and respected classics in the history of AOR/Westcoast music. The project was formed by songwriting team Tom Kelly/Billy Steinberg and this one-off album was released in June 1983 on Epic Records. It was recorded at Good Night L.A. Studios and produced by Keith Olsen with the assistance of top session/Toto- guitarist Steve Lukather. Other well known names in the musician line-up included Alan Pasqua (keyboards), Mike Baird (drums), Dennis Belfield (bass), David Paich (keyboards) and Richard Page (backing vocals). Soundwise it is melodic and radio friendly, typical of the era and a prime example of songwriting/musicianship at its very best. Several of the songs have been covered and made famous by other bands such as the wonderful ballad "Alone", which became Heart's most successful hit and the title track (Taking A) "Cold Look", which Honeymoon Suite did on their 1988 "Racing After Midnight" release. However, the re

From: Thomas/Coastline Date: March 16, 2021 at 17:22
However, the rest of the album is on par with mentioned songs and there are standout tracks like the Pompy keyboard-driven "Quicksand" and superb melodic rocker "I Don't Want To Lose You", both with great choruses and as good as AOR gets. "Time To Say Goodbye" is very much like Toto ca. around the time of "IV" and the Pop/Rock of "The Easy Way Out" sounds just like it could have been a track on John O' Banion's "Danger" album. In summary, it's a true masterpiece and essential for fans of: Toto, Foreigner, Chicago, David Roberts and John O' Banion.
