This was one of the first Christian rock albums I had heard after being saved in '83, and I was blown away by their musicianship and dedication to their art - at the time, nobody I knew had heard about them - got all my non-believing friends listening/my band even played some of these tunes in bars before I got out of that scene altogether - if you like melodic rock with Christ-conviction, you WON'T GO WRONG HERE. This music has a VERY SPECIAL place with this old rocker! |

I thought this CD was the best they ever did. JUDAS KISS is probably my all time favorite christian song. This is the only album I really dig from Petra. I heard a lot of other material and, sad to say, I thought it sucked. They seemed to lose their edge after this release. Maybe the religious people thought it was too rocking. I don't know. But, in my opinion, this is Petra's finest hour. (creeper@sunlink.net) |

Rigid religious rubes were petrafied when righteously renegade bands started wrapping the gospel message up in the medium of rock music, and Petra became one of their favorite targets. This is pretty dated, lightweight stuff by today's standards, but at the time of its release, few Christian bands were rocking harder. This was the album that really kickstarted Petra's surge in popularity, thanks to the now-classic song "Judas Kiss," with its powerful, hammering rhythm and even more powerful lyrics. It really is the standout track, and all the others pale in comparison like a plain-faced girl standing next to a supermodel, with only "Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows" even coming close thanks to its driving beat and church-scolding message. Thankfully, the band would continue to improve on subsequent releases, shedding the dated sound of the '70s and evolving fully into the sound of the '80s, bringing more power to their albums in the process. |
