Giant brought to us more of a clean rock and roll unlike their sleazy late-80's counter-parts such as Motley Crue, the LA Guns or Poison. 'Last Of The Runaways' is inspired tasteful keyboard rock without every song being about pimping around late at night & getting laid. Giant brought us a lot more than that. The ballads are very good as are the rockers (check out "Love Welcome Home" & "I'm A Believer", two EXCELLENT songs). The musicianship is solid & the songwriting is as well. A must-have.

I liked some of the songs on this cd but as a whole it lacked a certain "thing" to keep me intrested. I say try at our own risk. the risk is low because the songs I like are great, worth a used price

This debut album brought back the polished arena rock of the late70s/early80s,and was a nice alternative when at the time the rock scene was dominated mostly by glam-metal.Dann Huff's guitar playing is superb, while his soulful vocals remind me of the vocal god himself,Foreigner's Lou Gramm.Alan Pasqua's keyboards are subtle and melodic, while the rhythm section is tight and powerful.I'll See You in My Dreams was the biggesty hit,but there are many gems here. Time To Burn was even better.

I've read alot of praises here in heavyharmonies to albums and bands that don't deserve even to be heard. Like that of Britney Fox. But on this band and album, its a different case. I'm glad to say that all of the comments above are true. The guitar playing here is a class of its own. The whole album is almost perfect.

Hey, uh, "noname", this Dan Huff is a different dude than David & the Giants' Dan Huff. This Huff was in early WHITEHEART. Saw D&Giants several times in 80's - GOOD guys/musicians from Mississippi, but definitely diff guy. This Huff has played on just about EVERYBODY's songs with WIDE range of music, but his guitar sound/style is always recognizable - it just has that something special. My review: THIS MUSIC DIDN'T LEAVE MY PLAYER FOR A MONTH WHEN I 1st GOT IT - THAT'S HOW GOOD IT IS!!

I bought Last of the Runaways by chance when I was 12 (1989). The song I'll See You in My Dreams got me through some hard times and I tie it closely to my childhood. The tape over the years died out but I kept the song with me. I thought I was the only person who had ever heard of GIANT. After finding this site, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person who thinks Last of the Runaways is a genius album that is masterfully done. Dug this out again the other day and it still sounds amazing. I remember reading originally the label didn't want Dann to sing on this, but it would've lost something without his passion and energy. A million dollar recording budget helps immensely, and is why no records in this century sound anything like this. The guitar playing is fabulous, just listen to the fade-out solo on "Hold Back the Night"... A classic, and just better than "Time to Burn" for me. 10/10.

Although it has it's fair share of fillers, the melodic songs are simply outstanding - 'Ill see you in my dreams', 'It takes two', 'Hold back the night' and 'Love welcome home' are ultimate gems for me in this great melodic rock disc. Beautiful vocals and musical delivery.

First rate musicianship with tight songs. I like this one better than Time to Burn but Giant doesn't make a bad CD. These guys should be bigger than they are but they are recognized and appreciated by AOR fans everywhere and should be. It is much deserved. Get them all you will love this group.

I can't stress the enormous talent of these musicians in every aspect. From playing their instruments to the vocals and the compositions. This could IMO well be the best AOR/Rock album ever made. This CD stirs up emotions like nothing else. With the way the music industry is going today, Im pretty sure we will never again hear anything as talented and pure class like this is. The thought of that makes me very sad. This is the gem in my collection along with Strangeways and Harem Scarem debut.

Hey Erik, based on your likes I suggest you also try to track down the superb 'Bad Child' and 'Waiting for...' CDs by German band Universe. I'm with z4roxx on 'Open Invitation' by Roko, but I'm not the hugest fan of the debut. Very consistent but more leaning towards good AOR as opposed to the melodic hard rock bliss gem that is 'Open Invition'. I suggest you keep an eye our for their third CD too 'Think about tomorrow' - heavier, but superb. Happy hunting!
|
From: z4roxx |
Date: February 11, 2005 at 18:08 |
Agree Geoff,"think about tomorrow"great even if heavier, some riffs very close to thrash sound!ahaha!!Maybe you prefer"open invitation"because is more personal and original in arrangments, the debut has a much easy melodick approach with immediate melodies but...it's a masterpiece,IMO.I prefer the debut but the second one is very close to it indeed...

After all last discussions,I've heard again this one.Well,it's really a classic in aor, outstanding debut for one of the greatest aor bands.Maybe it contains more"sophisticated"arrangements than"time to burn"that has an easiest melodick approach but this one contains also true aor gems like"Innocent days","It takes two"or"The big pitch".The ballad"I'll see you in my dreams"is simply sensational and full of true and strong emotions while"Hold back the night"is one of the best songs ever heard.

when this came out, this was better then anything out, why didn't Hold back the night become a huge hit for the band, too classy maybe, this is a classic, a little stronger then Time to Burn in my book because of the great key sound on this one, Time is harder but still a classic as well!!! 3 is also important to have, so when is the next one being released?

KILLER!!!!!!! 10 of an album! "I'm a Believer" (although predictable, being that it the first song) is SOOO f.ckin' killer. Huff's vox, the drums, the tiny filler riffs, ALL RULE! RIP IT UP!!!

Muy buen disco, GIANT la hizo y muy bien I´ll see you in my dreams que gran balada lleno de feeling con esas guitarras crujientes, It takes two otro temazo puro aor, en general un albúm bueno ,pero más me gusta el Time to burn, no se, lo veo más maduro y con más técnica que este, pero este tambien esta muy bueno Love welcome home otra maravillosa canción, album que no puedes perder.

Can't understand why I haven't commented on this album already, this is simply one of the finest albums ever recorded, the only one better is Time To Burn But seriously this is AOR at its finest, if you like this then check out their two other studio albums and bands like Firehouse, Danger Danger, Blue Tears and FM could also be something for you! 80's Hard Rock & AOR FOREVER!

i don´t understand the discution about this album and time to burn, to me they are the same. excelente albums made by a guy that knows what he was doing. it took time for him to do something on his own but when he did this is what you get: 2 of the best melodic rock albums made on those years (a pity grunge was knocking on the door those days!!!)a couple of years sooner in this would be mega-albums.

Wonderful album with strong and harmonic melodies! AOR at it's best! But too bad that our Swedes (H.E.A.T) have stolen the chorus from "I'll See You In My Dreams" on Cry. I told them to skip that song but they never listened. Anyway, this album is a must have if you are a music fan. And don't forget to pick up Time To Burn as well.

This album contains sheer perfection in songs like Innocent Days and It Takes Two. They're songs I can listen to again and again. I don't get the U2 references: they sond nothing like them and what's more this is 1000 times better than anything they've produced. A masterpiece.

After five years, this is still an album I keep coming back to. Dann Huff is a brilliant guitarist and maintains melody while playing at incredible speed. The opener is explosive and contains a nice intro solo to warm things up; Innocent Days is a slightly progressive rocker with very catchy vocals and a great chorus; I'll See You... is a very decent ballad and although it borders on mediocrity, it's saved by Huff's passionate vocals and solo. Shake Me Up is another winner with a loud, booming chorus. It Takes Two is probably my favourite, the solo is out of this world and the lyrics I find are very meaningful. Hold Back... is another winner and is probably my second favourite - the outro solo leaves me wanting more. Love Welcome Home is the better of the two ballads and has Huff's passionate vocals - the song rises slowly to a great crescendo I feel. The Big Pitch is a standard rocker to end the disc with. Definitely one of my favourite albums of all time.

The guitar solo in 'Innocent Days' is very similar to the intro of the song 'When the Love Gas Gone' by Ten.
