|Okay ... the case, however tenuous (and it is indeed VERY tenuous) has been made for why Bolton's previous soft-rock soporific, Soul Provider 'deserved' to be on this site. The argument was based largely on Bolton's hard-rock pedigree and a smalll handful of more AOR-ish album cuts. With Time, Love And Tenderness, the argument doesn't wash. This is pure adult-contemporary, dentist-office/elevator music, through and through. How do I know? Shit, I had to listen to the damn thing in the car on the way to school for about a year, alternated with Rod Stewart's album that had 'The Motown Song' on it. That's right: even at the time of its release, this was music middle-aged women liked. In other words: an extremely questionable inclusion on HH, flying in the face of the Cher doctrine, cherry-picking a mom-rock artist's more AOR-related works.|

|Now we all know what's coming. Dan or one of the other inner-circle cats will come on and be all super-defensive and ham-fisted, and tell me to get fucked if I don't dig it. Maybe some of the AOR wimps will try to school me in what a masterpiece TL&T truly is. So I'll just head that off with this: the justification for Soul Provider was already paper-thin; it's virtually nonexistent here. I challenge you to justify its addition without referring to Blackjack, Desmond Child, co-writing songs for Kiss, or past solo albums, or any of the other flimsy bullshit that typically props this guy up.|

|Having listened to this album, the only song that does anything for me is New Love as it seems to be the most AORish song on here and the vocals shine. The rest is a bit too soft even for me. I also dislike the backing vocals on a lot of the songs which sound a bit poppy. Definitely not my cup of tea but I'm not bothered by its being here.|

|See, this is a prime example of where the Cher Doctrine fails. If I recall, someone made the point on Bolton's '87 album, 'This was his last AOR album.' And then Soul Provider got added, and someone else said, 'I can see the AOR-ness of this, but not the next one.' And now here that next one is. So why not add the one after that? It probably features the same stable of AOR session players and 'song doctors.' Because he's already in, after all--despite being widely regarded by rockers as the polar opposite of anything rock at the time and ever after. Does Garth Brooks get on here with his Chris Gaines alter-ego, just because it was a stated attempt at a 'rock' album? I know Dan and Co. hate this argument, but to be honest, they built this monster, and they built it with Bolton, Cher, and yes, Shania Twain too--artists who are overwhelmingly known for styles outside of the sphere of this site, but who maybe had one or two albums that qualify, often under the loosest of parameters.|

|It would be like adding Tori Amos based on her having been a touring keyboardist for Billy Idol, and fronting a glam band called Y Kant Tori Read? Or Weezer, because of Rivers Cuomo's youthful hair-metal aspirations and because 'Hash Pipe' sounds a little like '80's metal. It's a bridge too far, man. Or, to quote another soft-rock act who enjoyed moderate success on AOR radio in the early- to mid-'80's (consult your Billboard chart archives ...) 'I Can't Go For That (No Can Do).'|

|Vocally Michael really reaches his peak here, there are some incredibly soulful sung parts on here. OK, musically it's maybe sometimes a bit Vegas casino style, but it's the voice that induces incredible amounts of power and punch in the songs. I actually like this one more than Soul Provider, the songs are stronger and the singing performance is, well, out of this earth.|
