Finally this marvellous album's posted here at the glorious Heavy Harmonies site!!!...actually this release put Michael Bolton where he's now...a superstar!!!...packed with amazing hits such as "It's Only My Heart","How Am I Supposed To Live Without You","How Can We Be Lovers" and so on...highly recommendable stuff...100/100

Where thiss disc put him is in dentist offices and elevators across America, that's where. I know Dan doesn't dig people questioning his decisions what to include on this site. Late-'80's Cher? Okay. Richard Marx? I can go along. Even Bolton's previous disc, can just squeeze in. But I gotta put my foot down: there is absolutely no fucking way this CD belongs on this site. Look at the category: it says Soft Rock. And if you go to the banner at the top of the homepage, it don't say NOTHING about no "Soft Rock." Fuck, it's not even Lite AOR.

I mean, you may as welll add Michael Bubl`e or Hootie and the Blowfish. Why not include Kenny G, who plays on this album, in the "instrumental wizards" category? How come Michael Bolton is on here but Tom Petty and John Mellencamp, both of whom are much harder, aren't?

Well, let me put it to you this way. We use the word AOR on here a lot, but in America, AOR was an actual radio format before it was used to describe a style of music. In 1989, an AOR station would play stuff like Bon Jovi, Tom Petty, Foreigner, Rush, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, GnR, and some of the more popular hair-bands. But they did NOT play Michael Bolton. Who did? Soft rock stations that (adult contemporary) stations that also played lots of Gloria Estefan, Whitney Houston and another Heavy Harmonies favorite, '80's Chicago. I understand Bolton has some (rather tenuous) connections to the hard-rock/AOR world, but by the time Soul Provider came out, he was full-blown soft-rock. In 1989, this was music your mom liked.

The thing is that he started as a Melodic Rock/AOR artist with Blackjack and early solo stuff before launching this "episode" and then he changed into a more commercial type of music(a cross of pop/soft rock/aor may i say ???)...i doubt there's gonna be any other MB album posted here at HH but the ones that already are in,mainly,because of the popularity that each album gave(and not counting "Time,Love & Tenderness" for example)...cheers

Sure, Rick, point well taken. But by the same token, Pantera started as a glam band, and then totally changed their style, but I don't see The Great Southern Trendkill on here. And I'm sure Bolton's '91 album is next. The precedent has been set.

There are no more than 5 decent to good AOR/Pop songs on here. The rest are duets and pure pop ballads that your granny would like. No disrespect Rick but 100/100? That would make this album up there with the likes of Journey's Escape, Foreigner 4, Survivor's Vital Signs, Icon's Night of the crime, the Touch debut and even better than Bolton's own debut and Everybody's Crazy. I seriously think you are either pissed out of your head on alcohol or you have been smoking something wacky. I just can not understand how certain people rate albums at all. To give a 100/100 would surely mean that EVERY SINGLE SONG is an absolute classic, absolutely killer in every single way. To me those kind of albums are incredibly rare to hear and this album here is definately NOT a classic in any way whatsoever. Your granny would like a lot of it though

Rick's always been vey generous with his ratings. A 75 from me means medium-good, but for him, it's a failing grade. That's cool, everybody has their own style, and I got no problem with Rick. But I'm not afraid to giv ea low rating, like in this case, I gave it the lowest possible, just because it doesn't belong on here. So Bolton was in Blackjack and earlier albums were AOR-ish. So what? This one ain't. Never mindd Roxette, you may as well include that other Michael that middle-aged (and older) women love: McDonald. I'll come right out and say it: Fuck Michael Bolton and his blubbering voice and his wannabe "blue-eyed soul disguised as AOR" bullshit.

The thing that annoys me about Bolton is that he started his career as a so called rocker(Blackjack opened for Ozzy Osbourne) but in interviews asking about his early career, he basically wouldn't even acknowledge his rocker roots. There is a reason why he jumped genres to AC/easy listening and that's because he wasn't breaking through in the rock (AOR)charts. So he cultivated his Lion-locks lounge singer image, catering to Oprah soccer moms by crooning covers. He was a talent and sold 52+ million albums world-wide, but I don't think he's endanger of be called by the R&R hall of fame as a lot of his material hasn't aged well IMO. With his money you think he could have done a little more with his hair as to me it always looked like a ratted out crows-nest as he should have called Kevin Dubrow's wig maker. Well this CD was unexpected. This is some extremely radio friendly soft rock but quite melodic too. I like the hits as they're easy on the ear such as How Can We Be Lovers and How am I Supposed to Live Without You. I like this sort of commercial soft rock but there's a bit too much filler here for me.

Let me just point out something. Do you realize "Heavy Harmonies" has Michael Bolton in the database, eve this album, whose inclusion here is extremely dubious ... but this site has absolutely NO Foghat? Seriously, see for yourself. Click on the F in the alphabet, and there it is, goes right from Flyweil to Fool's Gold. A band that is sundeinably hard rock, with several songs that get played every day on classic-rock radio, and they're not here. But somehow, Michael Bolton's housewife snoozefest is. Just sayin' ...

Foghat were British, dude. But yeah, my aunt's boyfriend gave me a copy of Foghat Live. It was 1994, and he was still singing the praises of this band who hadn't done dick in fifteen years, how ahead of their time they'd been. So I listened to it, and it sounded like old-fart '70's rock. But, like I say, there'd be absolutely no argument that they belong on Heavy Harmonies, unlike Michael fucking Bolton.

But since we are all breaking down the HH barriers together how about giving the green light for David Hasselhoff - Night Rocker (1985)? I have heard HH policy from the top that if Britney Spears released a AOR/rock album then it deserves to be here. There's a reason this guy was the is one of Germany/Austria's biggest selling artists of all time. Maybe so, Whiplah, but you notice whoever submitted this one apparently felt that even Westcoast/Lite AOR was too much o fa stretch, and so labeled this one "Soft Rock." Only one or two other discs on all of HH have that dubious distinction. It makes me want to start submitting a bunch of Michael McDonald, DeBarge, and Mike and the Mechanics, just as a joke, but since Dna was kind enough to set me up with a work-around, I won't do that. I think my displeasure with everybody's mom's favorite singer has been noted for the record, so I'm done bellyaching. I think.

Years ago, when I first started browsing HH, I couldn't figure out how Glass Tiger was listed here, as IMO, they were WAY too soft. Also, I couldn't figure out at the time, why Judas Priest are on Brutal Metal, but Accept and Dio are listed here. Music is subjective, and we'll never all agree on who should be listed and where, so I just go with it.

Hey whiplash1972, would it be worth my time submitting some Bachman-Turner Overdrive CDs? I ask because they're mainly mid to late 1970s/early 1980s and are harder rocking than the likes of Foghat and Status Quo and are more worthy in my opinion. Also how about Free with Paul Rodgers or is that too early?

Wow, the discussion about this album being on HH.... My opinion? Well, there are some mighty fine tracks on the cd, like Love cuts deep, How can we be lovers, You wouldn't know love,... And How am I supposed to live without you is one of the mightiest ballads ever, for sure. And then there's the likes of Landau, Huff and Lukather performing guitar here. And Bolton has one of THE rock voices of all times, no discussion about that. So: it rightly belongs here, and rates good .
