How could no one comment on this cd??? Still sounds fresh to me in 2002 and it's too bad this album came out at that weird time between the demise of hair metal and the advent of grunge because it's one of the best debut albums of the last 20 years. Excellent songwriting and for the time also very daring. These guys should have been the Queen of their generation. Oh well talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time in the wrong solar system...

I purchased their music back in 1991 in Florida. Well balanced album. It rocks too bad Grunge came around. Great song writing. Pop harmonies(beatles) metallica riffs and blazing solos great drumming. I heard Jason Bieler was going to produce Coal Chamber.

From: jarett r. Date: December 10, 2002 at 23:23
i've heard that saigon kick had a different drummer before phil varone. matt kramer and jason bieler both have solo albums.

This one is really, really, really great. This debut album should have been the starting point to big success. 2nd lp is great too. Like the others but not as much as the 2 first... If you enjoy Saigon Kick, then you're my friend. If you don't like it, you can be my friend either...but never turn your back on me (joke).

Strong debut. They really tried to take hard rock into new directions. This disc totally stands the test of time. Sounds as great today as it did 12 years ago. It's a shame their other albums weren't this consistant.

There are some real killer tracks on here, my favorites being What You Say, Colors & Come Take Me Now. I just listened to this last week, I also like the Lizard, but I agree with Gar, they seemed to go downhill after this release, especially after the loss of Matt Kramer. Still a good band, but they lost their direction...

From: Fat Freddy Date: December 22, 2003 at 13:11
The first two S.G. discs are classics, unfortunately they came out at the wrong time, just as hard rock was dying out and grunge was coming up. You can keep everything they did after Matt Kramer left though.

A different suggestion for hard rock back in 1991 from a band with strong personality and attitude. Definately not ordinary hard rock which flirts with alternative and even punk sometimes. I know that the majority of melodic rockers would find any potential mix of hard rock with such musical styles scary but since all these elements are combined succesfully and the music is touching then there is no room for rejection...Aerosmith meets Pearl Jam.

Massive - that's all you can say about this in regards to songs, riffs, aggression, ear for melody and most of all choruses. Check out 2,3 and 5 for proof. 'Come take me now' is an excellent soaring ballad too. I heard this in my car last week but the names of the songs escape me now. The one with the sickening verses and the chorus, 'Even if you walked across the sky...' is just one of the best choruses ever! Very good CD.

Best of the Saigon Kick albums!

From: Larry NYC Date: November 1, 2004 at 15:02
If you love this CD, You gotta Matt Kramer's solo record 'War and Peas' WOW!

From: Eric Date: November 4, 2004 at 14:28
Saigon Kick got the unfortunate label of hair band. I am a huge 80's glam/hair band fan but I would never include these guys in that category. I believe they got fucked by their label and management. They should have been marketed differently. There music as well as their lyrics were so original. The best thing was they changed their sound as they progressed. Compare Devil in the Details to this album and you would think it was a different band all together.

A great band not afraid to try out different styles. Along with Europe they were my fave band of this era. This debut has great tracks and gives a good insight into what was to come. My Life, What you Say, Colours, Down by the Ocean.... Marvellous. I saw them support Extreme years ago in London and they were great. Extreme weren't bad either apart from Nuno Tenniscourt and his drwan out 'guitar masturbation'. SK Rule!

From: rockhardrock Date: March 13, 2007 at 17:58
Even their second album was sold better, that doesnt mean it is better. This their best album in their history for me.There are 2 good hard rockers on that record:'what you say' and 'acid rain'.great melodic rock songs:'colours','coming home','love of good' and a superb ballad'come take me now'.Well i dont really like their style of music-they were different than others bands of that era-they were hard rockers mixing some alternative rock(little bit of grunge) into their music.

From: BIG-TIME Date: April 16, 2008 at 12:40
This is toooo alternative for me maybe the older generation who where their at the end of the 60's and early 70' s will like this. Me? nope!... yes they do sound like the beatles in places, though I like the beatles...but I am not buying a beatles album. The harmonies and chorus's are excellent (production is AWESOME on them) but they are not enough to make me buy there albums. I do hear the mordern sound there and that puts me of too, if like me you like good old kick ass rock like Babe Blu, AKA, Slash Puppet, Firehouse and so on don't get this thinking it's the next big thing in your collection. If you like a bit of alternative then go for it, for me I like 80's rock not 90's alternative rock! trust me...KEEP ROCKIN ALL!!!

A friend of mine borrowed me almost all the Saigon Kick´s Discography. I agree with most people here, The production, Chorus and the vocals were the best of this band, of course very good songwriting too. 'Colors' and 'Come Take Me Now' my favorite songs. Very underrated band and this album sounds fresh ´til today imo. 8.2/10

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: April 19, 2009 at 13:29
I prefer The Lizard, as I think the riffs are stronger and heavier on that one. The debut doesn't quite seem to gel for me, and the wannabe-Beatles phony English accents really get on my nerves. Some good songs though, including 'What You Say,' 'What Do You Do,' 'Suzy,' I.C.U.' and the great ballad 'Come Take Me Now.' But 'My Life' is just awful.

From: WookieEnthal Date: July 12, 2009 at 0:12
I discovered this band when they opened for Ratt and they were just fantastic. I guess you could call them progressive, late 80's/early 90's rock along with Kik Tracee...they have the same vibe to me anyway. Check them out and you will probably like them.

From: hair metal again Date: January 24, 2012 at 1:51
very good debut by SAIGON KICK back in 91 !strong personality ,excellent guitars ,fine vocals, accurate production by mr Wagener and some good songs.my fav are "suzy","month of sundays" and "colors".i prefer their next 3 but SAIGON KICK are a very good band and they prove that in this one also!

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: January 24, 2012 at 18:29
What's the deal with this? Mine doesn't have any kind of warning label or anything, but at the end of "Ugly," where he says, "So fuckin' ugly!" it sounds like it's been edited out. Is that just how it is on every copy, or did I get some kind of "clean" version?

From: Ydol eM Date: November 16, 2013 at 13:37
Well, it's not so easy to categorize this debut. Perhaps, I'd call it heavy "crossover" rock because of some alternative elements here. However, I'm sure this is a great and brave piece of music not only for that time being. The producer Michael Wagener might have been inspired by his previous work (a great album as well) for Extreme because if I should compare I would take "Pornograffitti" and also add Lillian Axe, Skid Row, The Wildhearts or Faith No More (so colourful album is it). I'd like to emphasize perfect multi-vocal harmonies in the most of songs here which make this album more melodic and comprehensible. 90/100.

From: Reverend Mayhem Date: February 5, 2014 at 8:08
The concept "Too much of a good thing" kills this album for me -- specifically, the stacked vocals that go on for miles and miles over boring melodies. On this debut outing the Kicksters latched onto a formula that they pound out again and again: "when in doubt, add harmonies -- and where the harmonies are absent, a kind of Grunge-like riff droning with annoying flat vocal delivery is the order of business." Opening track "New World" goes nowhere, "What Do You Do" is silly posturing, "Acid Rain" is stupid filler -- in fact, most of the songs are just kind of blah to me, with many promising guitar riffs that don't amount to much. On the positive side, "What You Say" has a memorable vibe despite the harmonic overkill; the bouncy, quirky "My Life" molds choral gimmickry into a catchy, fun stand-out, and "Come Take Me Now" is a nice ballad that would be at home on an Extreme album (a band that did it all much better). I've tried several times, but I'm just not feeling this one. 45 / 100

From: Leykis101 Date: October 22, 2021 at 7:46
I wanted to leave a comment cause I started jamming this again, New World has one of the most simple but coolest guitar riffs in history, it just works, and it comes across heavy and catchy, fucking love that riff, killer disc, check it out.
