Tesla are one of my all-time favorite bands, and maybe that's why I hold them to such high standards. It's certainly been a bit frustrating being a fan in the past few years because of that. So here's the new acoustic album, unnecessary as it may be. By far the best songs are the two new songs and the one cover (and yes, "Better Off Without You," which dates to their days as City Kidd, does remind of GnR's "Patience," at least as far as the chord progression). The rest of the disc, which consists of rehashed older material, is a mixed bag. No song lives up or surpasses its original, electrified version, but "Song And Emotion," "A Lot To Lose," "Shine Away" and "What You Give" are all enjoyale. On the other hand, "Edison's Medicine" is just weird, and "Hang Tough" is downright terrible. Many melodies are reworked to eliminate the high notes, and Jeff cuts a lot of words off to avoid holding long notes too. It sometimes sounds like he might as well be talking instead of singing. |

This "no long notes" approach to the vocals nearly ruins "Second Street," where Jeff's voice appears to be cracking horrendously during teh verses ... except he replicates the effect on every line! I guess he's going for "desperate longing," but it just sounds strange, adn not good. The song is saved by a fantastic chorus though. |
