This CD is what starded me on my journey of hair metal, only the best music ever. The era was great to grow up in. The best rock bands of all time came out in this era and Poison was at the point of attack. Great power rock and awesome ballads, that is what is missing in todays music.

Ten tracks and five of them are pretty damn good. The other five? You guessed it, FILLER. It is certainly no big deal, there are some major MAJOR hits on 'Open Up And Say...Ahhh!' and this record established Poison as one of the most shocking & riveting bands of their time, capturing a great deal more attention than most of their counter-parts. Maybe a strange thing to say, but I liked the filler on 'LWTCDI' more. 'Open Up..' has the hits & it has the stuff. Recommended for glam fans. 8.6/10.

Oh, and WidoMakr--the only bands I can think of at this moment that sounded anything like Poison aren't that obscure......Pretty Boy Floyd and Tuff are all I can think of. Not really that much of a help, but that is all that comes to mind. Later.

I found the banned Japanese pressing of this one today and it has an extra track called 'Livin' For The Minute' and it's pretty damn good. Even without the extra track- it still rocks. I liked more than half of the songs on this album. I think these guys kicked Pretty Boy Floyd's ass- especially in the beginning.

Just tried to listen to this cd, after reading all the good rewievs here........But but but, this is NOT good in my ears. Ths guitars are sooo overdone and doesnt sound like guitars at all. Every Rose```Is perhaps the best song ever written by a rock band. Along wit`h When The Children Cry (White Lion) my alltime favorite ballads. Eventhough I like Poison in a way, I think they were quite overrated.
|
From: dokken6008 |

Kim-- Poison are just a good, fun rock and roll band. But let it be said that 'Open Up And Say...Ahhh!' was a quite an improvement over 'LWTCDI' and it becomes even MORE apparent if you listen to the two records in a row.
|
From: Motley |
Date: May 21, 2002 at 16:09 |
Why can bands always only manage to make 3 great releases in a row and then everything goes to hell? This one is a great one and I especially love FALLEN ANGEL. a total blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!Love on the rox is nearly as good and of course Your Mama... A great party anthem. fuckin great they're back in the same style again. Only heard SQUEEZE BOX and it sounds liek a hidden track from LWTCDI. YUMMMMMMMMI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Glam forever rulez!!!!! Now terrorize the radio staions for airplay damnit!!!
|
From: Rick |
Date: May 21, 2002 at 19:58 |
Hate to disappoint you Motley, but the new one is bland at best. Boring guitars, vocals, etc. No party rock with an attitude, which is what made these guys so damn great. Oh well, one day I'll just have to accept the fact that the 80's are gone.
|
From: jason |
Date: May 21, 2002 at 20:34 |
Rick! What you are telling me doesn't suprise me one bit. Poison needs to quit trying so hard. There just a flippin' rock band! Stop trying to be something you're not POISON! Play 3 cords per song like the first album or shut up!! Don't tell me how to save the f##kin' world, just talk dirty!

Rick you sound excatly like any wisecrackers that have said than thing all over again 'the 80's are gone'. I give it a proud and big middlefinger and can only laugh at your comments. You really sound like a difbeliever who cut your hair short, walking around in lawyers suits and listen to friendly easylistening coz your mother wont allow anything else. Take a listen to the new CD and tell me it's worth listening to. I've got it in my CD player for the last 5 days and still can't get in to it.

From: Reno |

I have to agree with Rick on the new cd. The production is among the worst I've ever heard. The sound is very shallow with no depth. I like the Poison of old with the wall of sound. Hollyweird was a very cheaply put together record with piss poor songwriting. Even the 5 new songs on Power To The People were much better. I'm glad I downloaded the whole album to listen to first. I saved myself $15 that I can now spend on something worthwhile. I love Poison, but the new cd is a beercoaster.

Hey WidoMakr, if you have access to Ebay then get Maximum- Just For Kicks. They sound a whole lot like Poison with slight Motley influence. I think they are much better than PBF personally. You get nearly 60 minutes of great tunes. They went bankrupt shortly after signing. Of course, most people that dealt with Enigma met the same fate. Anyways, I highly recommend it to Poison fans.

They sell cheap, usually for the minimum bid. My purchase went uncontested. Not too many people know they exist. They are a great fun band for Posion/ PBF type fans. If your music has to be serious, dark, and absolutely no hint of fun- avoid this album.

Man, oh Man! This is an album of triumphant sleaze and bombastic gooze! Was this album recorded on a four track in CC's basement with a traintrack overtop his house and rickie rocketts planted on the tape machine. Open up and say ahhhh to the barrell of a gun! A fully loaded zero!

From: dokken6008 |

WidoMakr-- No, it's okay. I'm just always big on that 'AC/DC'-sound. Big riffs, big solos, big choruses--just monster everything! But really my musical tastes range from Def Leppard to Phil Collins to AC/DC to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers--just rock and roll, baby. I could do with some pop now and then, as long as it sounds good and instruments are being played. The last thing I want to hear is a bunch of keyboard generated music with a drum machine playing in the background. No thank you.

Marginally better than the awful debut album, but still cliched, generic crap.Poison were IMHO the epitome of crap 80s glam.Nothin But a Good Time,Ur Mama Dont Dance etc...generic shit.Fallen Angel is one of the few examples of a good Poison song, while I have to admit Every Rose... is a great power ballad. But, please all u hair-metal freaks who listen only to bugglegum rock, grow up and broaden ur musical horizons.Bret had a 'squealy' voice, while CC was an Eddie van Halen wannabe. Baaad album.

I agree with a lot of u that 80s metal did have many quality bands, but Poison and their ilk (Warrant,Faster Pussycat, the utterly horrible Britny Fox etc.) were among the worst exponents. For quality 80s metal acts look to Van Halen,Motley Crue,AC/DC,Dokken,Iron Maiden,Def Leppard,Bon Jovi,Guns N' Roses,Whitesnake,WASP,Tesla and Skid Row,among others. They are quality 80s metal; they're fun rock'n'roll...but unlike Poison etc. they wrote great songs and their music stands up outside the late80s.

People love this album, sure there are some great tunes but half of it is pretty weak, and the production sucks compared to other mid 80's hair bands. Still worth having though, Fallen Angel is probably one of the most classic 80's tunes ever written. 7,5/10

I avoided the 'P' section of this site just so I would not be tempted to speak on this crapcicle! Too late. Pity that real bands like Cats in Boots and Sweet FA got limited shots while people were begging for more of this gak. Songs= awful. Production= awful. Band= putrid. I can honestly say I may never listen to this tape again. Hell would be 'Ahhh' and 'Hysteria' on a perpetual loop. 'Whoo, ha ha ha, ya'. Nice vocal fill Bret! Oh the humanity!

From: me |

I agree with trick. This album was rubbish. Poor production, purile songwriting and arrangement and average technical ability. Yes, C.C Deville is a reasonable guitarist, technically sound, but the others are quite ordinary musicians. The lyrical content is juvenile and shows little talent, I mean, come on, some of those lyrics are laughable... ooo yeah, ha ha!! If it wasn't for their looks and overall appearance, they'd have never been offered a contract. An album for 13 year old girls!!!

I had this CD out in my car over the weekend and I think this is the first album that I agree with you on Trick...to me it just sounds real uninspired. Nothin' But a Good Time was huge when I was in h.s. so it brings back memories of some awesome parties and Fallen Angel is a great song but everything else is just pretty bland. I like Look What the Cat Dragged In for it's raw sound, and Flesh and Blood was a huge improvement and what I think was their best album.

At the time, I kinda liked Poison. But as the years went by, I slowly grew to the point I'm at now, where I hate them with a passion. Bret Michaels, the Captain Kangaroo of Hard Rock, with his pathetic, yipping 'Yeow!' and stage schtick ripped off from Steve Whiteman of the vastly-superior Kix. Idiotic songs with fake attitude. And every girl who likes traditional hard rock LOVES this sorry outfit!

DE TODAS MANERAS JUNTO A 'EVERY ROSE' Y 'FALLEN ANGEL'CREO QUE LAS TRES SON LOS PUNTOS MAS ALTOS EN LA DISCOGRAFIA DE POISON. A VECES SUBESTIMADOS, TIENEN EN SU HABER CLASICOS QUE MAS DE UNA BANDA DEBE ENVIDIAR. LA SEGUNDA ETAPA YA FUE INTRASCENDENTE. COMENTARIIOS: carro_martin2000@yahoo.com.ar

Yeah, the production could've been better. But, this is an album to get drunk with and screw your woman (or women, depending on how much of a stud you are). If you're gonna buy this, pick up the original cover, which isn't as hard to find as most people think. HA! And to think, some people found that cover offensive. Religious people piss me off. South american 80´s heavy metal fan: This album is good, but I´m sure the first Poison album was better. 'Open up and say ah' has good songs, such as 'look but you can´t touch' and 'nothing´ but a good time'; but they could have been heavier and wilder, more acording to a fan who wants to rock hard.

why do you criticise poison like this,Rockhead? This album is pure hard rock and one of the best glam metal album of all time. It contain one of the best ballad in the 80's(every rose has its thorn) and one of the best songs in the late 80's(nothing but a good time).it reach no.6 in the us chart in 1988 and sell over million of copies. How many hardrock/metal album have done that? If i would to rate poison, i think they are as good as motley crue, cinderella, dokken, ratt and G'n'R.
|
From: jack |

And if anyone don't agree with what i said in the final sentence above,at least poison is better than any of the grunge, mallcore ,alternative or pop band there ever was,is or ever will be!KORN,NIRVANA AND OASIS MAY BE THE BEST IN THEIR RESPECTIVE FIELD BUT THEY ARE JUST CRAP COMPARE WITH POISON.

From: Rockhead |

To sell a million copies is no barometer of taste. The reason I slate Poison is because they are talentless bozo's!! To compare them to Crue, Cinderella, Dokken, Ratt and G'n'R is an INSULT to those bands. You should be ashamed. Listen to the musicianship on either of the 1st 2 Poison albums-amateur hour at best. Warren DeMartini and George Lynch must be cryingtheir hearts out to be compared to an idiot such as CC DeCokehead

Brett Michaels can be compared to peter Andre-Nice Abdomen, shit voice. Have you heard these guys live with no overdubs!! they suck. The Drummer is lame and the Bass Player Bobby bo balls is a talentless clown. They are laughing all the way to the bank at the expense of losers who spent hard earned cash buying this utter drivel. Poison and Warrant made melodic rock a laughing stock. In terms of musicianship they are BAD!!

Poison are a rock answer to boy bands-no talent, just a cash in at the right time. Jesus, Brett Michaels thinks he is a talent and serious musician. Every Rose is appalling!! Compared to ballads of the day it is an egotistical attempt at trying to gain some credibility and it failed spectacularly. Poison are not serious musicians. Is this enough for you Jack or would you like me to continue? I havn't even started on their song for world peace and an end to poverty (Unskinny Bop)

'Mallcore?' Crap, I really have to start keeping up with the trends...I did not know there was such a thing. Seriously, although I agree with pretty much everything Rockhead says about Poison, I consider them a guilty pleasure, especially this album. I'm a real sucker for hooks, and this has them aplenty. Bluesy...CC isn't deep enough to play the blues, talent...not exactly, catchy...sho' nuff! I don't put this in the player much, but every once in awhile, I need a shot of brainless hair rock.

Quote from Ric Bowde who produced Poison: You produced Poison’s “Look What The Cat Dragged In.” What do you remember about recording that album? What comes to mind? 'Recording Poison was interesting because I felt I was doing a great service to frustrated wannabe vocalists around the world by opening the singing profession up to those who were tone deaf and cannot sing , which had previously been barriers to aspiring singers'.

And another quote:You worked with both Taime Downe and Bret Michaels. 'Neither one are exactly known for their vocal ability. Who did you have to work more with to make them sound good? Taime was a piece of cake, I'm quite proud of what he achieved on the first album. Bret never sounded good no matter what I or any subsequent producer did'.

The sound is cleaned up this time and the writing is stronger. The big hits were all deserved (except the cover song), and some of the filler such as "Look But You Can't Touch" are actually decent. 7/10

They need to release a remastered version of this. It's one of my quietest CD's and when my mp3's from this play i have to crank up the volume. This is one of those CD's I can't critique because I know it so well. I bought it when I was 11 and listened to it daily till I was about 16. Recommended album. Not their best though. Flesh And Blood was their best by far and in my top 10... maybe top 5 I dunno. Fallen Angel is my favorite tune here. Never liked Your Mama Dont Dance so much tho.

I'm amazed by Kip's comments! I thought it was just me who got a dud copy, but yes, I agree! This CD is so bloody quiet!!! I also agree this is not Poison's best, but 'Fallen angel' will always be a personal fave of mine, I love 'Every rose has it's thorn' too, and even 'Nothin' but a good time' (What a single-monger!). But I don't dislike any songs off this CD. Great stuff - I love 'em!

I think the guitar playing is what makes this album so damn quiet. Songs like love on the rock, back to the rocking horse, good love and look don't touch have soft guitar sounding thoughout the song-its like cc tune down his guitar or something. you'll never find that in their 1st album with songs like no.1 bad boy,let me go to the show or look what the cat dragged in beacuse the guitar is so loud like the crue.

Thats why motley crue's album and songs are so loud and great that we don't really need to tune them up.

Alot of people blast Poison for not having talent..that is any muscial Validity for a 80's long hair. Well sometimes it's how hungry you are and being at the right time at the right place. Not musical talent. I think the record was the sign of the times. I loved the videos..being over the top party kinda thing. They had the right hooks though this records best songs for me were the singles or the videos. Look at Kiss they don't exactly have talent. Who cares. Just enjoy thr ride if you can.

From the known galm scene, togheter with Motley, they're the ones who really made it(music aside). Musicly talking instead for my aor ears, I think the only ones wich are really worth having, are the first three; after that they went down. All 3 of them really great wich remind us some amazing times with very fun and enjoyable tunes. Long live to the 80's!!

"Open Up and Say...Ahh!" is the best POISON album for sure, I like just about all songs on it. Great bonus tracks that should have been included are "Livin' For The Minute" and "Gotta Face The Hangman" (first on "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" CD-single, both real fine rockers! The Capitol 2006 remaster sounds stellar, finally volume is up, but the mix and production by Tom Werman was always top notch! This 5 x platinum success album had four solid singles and these plus another four, totally 8 songs, are all included on the awesome "Double Dose: Ultimate Hits" compilation. I always loved the sound of CC's guitars and Rikki's drums on this album btw, so using the "Mötley Crüe success producer" really paid off!

1n the glory years of hard rock 1982-1992, 1988 was the year things really started exploding. So many bands getting signed, so much music getting made. I could have picked Britny Fox, Lita Ford, Jetboy, Kingdom Come, Kix, Living Colour or Winger. But instead I'm going with Poison's second album. This release was everywhere. It had the country hit "Every Rose Has Its Thorn". It had the theme song for the whole scene "Nothin But a Good Time". It had a great cover "Your Mama Don't Dance" and my favourite track, the anthemic "Fallen Angel". I actually remember hearing a radio contest when they toured here in Australia for girls to win the chance to sleep with the group. I'm not sure if that is a false memory. Rated A.

Not sure about Australia, but in America, that radio contest would have been beyond the pale. I can imagine the contest being for the chance to "meet" the band, and then the DJ's making endless jokes. But from you read The Dirt (I think it was in that book), they talk about some radio station having a contest, "What Would You Do To Meet The Crue?" andhow explicit some of the responses they got from female (often extremely young) listeners were. The thing about 1988 was that most of the really big pop-metal releases that year were actually slow-starters from '87, like Guns n' Roses, Def Leppard, Aerosmith and White Lion. All were released in mid-'87, but it wasn't until well into '88 that they really took off. And the same ended up happening with some '88 releases.

I've been vocal about my non-fandom of this band, and still feel their first compilation is all the Poison anyone needs. But if you have to own an actual album, this is probably the one to go for. A step up over their amateurish debut in both songwriting and production, but not as bloated as Flesh And Blood. There's nothing as stupid or childish as "Talk Dirty To Me" or "Let Me Go To The Show" (or "Unskinny Bop" for that matter) and the worst offender in that regard is a cover. Tom Werman is known for his belief that the most important thing is a good rhythm guitar sound, and we certainly get that right from the beginning, C.C.'s opening riff on "Love On The Rocks" jumping out of the speakers with a rude and raunchy tone that carries through much of the record. That song is a good deep cut, and "Back To The Rocking Horse" and "Look But You Can't Touch" are somewhat overlooked as well. "Nothin' But A Good Time" conjures up the summertime vibes, but is just too chipper (and too overplaye

... overplayed) for me at this point—I don't ever need to hear it again. I don't care for Bret as a singer, and think he's even more of a doofus as a person, so that's always going to be an issue. C.C. DeVille, for his part, plays some surprisingly tasteful solos along with the occasional nasty, grinding riffs already mentioned. I mean, the solo in the even more done-to-death "Every Rose Has Its Thorn"—that's a good solo, in the "song within a song" style. You can hum it, sing it, whistle it, whatever. Ditto his recurring melody line in "Fallen Angel." Homer Simpson would describe Rikki Rockett's drumming "adequate," and Bobby Dall is mostly all but unheard except for a tasty lick near the end of "Every Rose." The deluxe reissue includes one bonus track whose title has already left my mind, but which is no better or worse than the other songs, plus a qen-minute "interview," much of which is taken up with clips from the songs you've just heard, plus bits of commentary from the band from

YES Stixx, those two bonus songs are great! I always thought so too, short but sweet tunes: Livin' For The Minute" and Gotta Face The Hangman! Just read a great book, Tom Werman's Turn It Up! My Time Making Hit Records In The Glory Days Of Rock Music, where Tom praised Poison guys for all working hard in the studio, wanting to try new ideas, and being nice to deal with. They weren't divas like so many other big bands at the time, I think he meant, implicitly. Tom also said he used an at the time rather new digital recording console and the mix he and Duane Baron got was superb! A big step up from the debut. According to Universal Music Japan, Open Up and Say...Ahh! has sold 8,000,000 copies worldwide. With their glam style looks, it was easy to complain about them at the time, perhaps, by jealous guys. But since their comeback with CC, they have shown they are actually solid players and CC performed Eddie's Eruption lately quite well one has to point out. Good Time rock 'n' roll

Amazing, this album is 36 years old, yet part of many's growing up. Original master by a "deaf" guy, some Chris Bellman, did a horrible job. Way too low levels AND no compression/power/bass at all. BUT good thing, a skilled mastering engineer called Evren Göknar, did a really good job in 2006. It took 18 years but finally sound was great, the way Tom Werman and his engineer (Duane Baron) intended. Mastering is not everything, but can certainly damage the outcome of an album. Greg Fulginiti did similar less than impressive work on Kix Blow my fuse same year. Probably the singles were enhanced, since there were plenty and both sold platinum. Bad To Be Good should have been omitted, I think, and replaced by either or both the way better and faster bonus tracks. As for the other 9 songs (1--9 above), all are killer tracks from their biggest album. 11 solid songs with the bonuses (Minute and Hangman, not essential but still fun good songs).
