Decent effort this, from the man behind the last Bob Catley album. Sound-wise this is very similar to Catley's last, but song-wise it's not as strong. Only "Jelunda" is as catchy as the majority of those tracks, but this is generally a pretty good listen with a big sound and plenty of keys. 7/10.

Indeed not bad at all, in fact rather good, the first one from mr.Hodson ! I especially like the use of plenty of keys ! Great ! And the sound is indeed à la Magnum, Bob Catley and also a bit Rainbow thrown in ! Good one ! Hope to hear more from the man ! This is the kind of stuff I like !

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this album when it was still in the mixing phase, and the main problem with this album was the horrible tracklisting arranged by Frontiers Records. The original tracklisting was so much stronger when arranged by Paul. Good songs and great axe work.

From: Zè Rocks Date: August 11, 2004 at 12:45
Yes, songs are pretty good, but the sound is the usual of too many Frontiers releases: the one of average demos.

From: Ardian Date: August 19, 2004 at 3:28
I'm afraid this is nowhere as strong as Paul's previous involvement... which is the great Bob Catley album "When Empires Burn". The production is weak too. The cover of "A Light In The Black" is pretty cool, though.

This starts of in cracking fashion with 'This Foolish World'. Bombastic Melodic Rock of good quality, although I would add that this disc suffers a little from overarrangement in the song department. Add too that a muddy production job and you end up with similar problems Ten had with a few of their releases. Still some great tracks,'This Foolish World'(as mentioned) 'Shamen Eyes','Soulman' & 'The Swan'(although this one suffers with the above problems). Still ,a promising debut, worth a listen.

After reading the above comments on this album I felt immediately compelled to drop a few lines to provide it of the justice it really deserves. This cd is by far one of the most consistent melodic rock efforts I've fuckin' heard in many years, there are no such overarrangments, horrible tracklist (though certainly there might have been a better one as said by Axe machine) or Magnum sound but much rather brilliant compositions built upon beautiful melody all over this effort.

From: hekkktor Date: September 4, 2005 at 22:33
However 1 thing I must agree: the production here is very poor, which indeed comes to dim the overall result, part of which also can be that sensation of overarranging. This album is not less good than Catley's When empires burn simply it is the production there that is far way superior. Nevertheless, every track on this magic album guards a jewel of a melody in it so to speak and you can percieve that the full album was crafted in detail as a journey into the personal musical vision of Hodson

From: hekkktor Date: September 4, 2005 at 22:42
This album is both light and darkness throughout, please don't have it compared to any Magnum albums just because the fact of hodson collaborating with Catley, I find much more dynamism in Hodson's album than in any of Magnum's I've listened to (and still I love Magnum) but "this strange world" really features some of the strongest anthemic lines and choruses out there, just go listen to "This foolish world" and specially "My Saviour" to understand what I mean, I can't recall any Magnum song

From: hekkktor Date: September 4, 2005 at 22:51
having a chorus that awsome. A remastering of this cd will be definitely welcome, it would be just like rescuing a bunch of lost diamonds out of a swamp. Last but not least, lyrics in this album are nice, beautiful and yet intriguing (again refer to "My saviour" or "Jelunda")....Man, now I have to play this one right away.

P.Hodson and the boys and their way to H. Rock. Power songs. Arrangements perfect for H.R. Vince O'Regan and his screaming guit=10/10('cos there is no H.Rock without guitars). NOTES: 1)I don't much like the arrangements for a couple of choruses. 2)I usually randomize it.The absence of particular hits(excepting The Swan)makes the track list quite 'linear'. RATING = High. (PS MyCdPlayer: n.1 at the moment-Avril L./Under my skin-'04).

This album caught me by suprise with its strong quality. Musically this is in line with Bob Catley's When Empires Burn album that Paul wrote the songs, and the songs on this album sound even bigger and more epic. And Paul Hodson turned out to be a very capable singer as well. I'd highly recommend this album to anyone who is into melodic hard rock and melodic metal.
