Well, this is pretty much the same sound as on Smokin' Delta Voodoo. They were released barely a year apart, as I recall. Anyway, it bears almost no resemblance to the full-tilt sleazy party rock of the debut. Songs are more mid-tempo and somewhat "modern"-sounding in the way of post-2000 Tesla. Lots of guitar and vocal effects, although maybe not as many as on Voodoo. The mood is still pretty introspective and not all that fun, but the songs don't seem quite as slow. If you're expecting "Walls Come Down" or "Hard To Hold," this ain't it, but I still think both SDV and DSOG are good, solid discs by an underrated band, and I wish they would've put out more, but this appears to be their last studio album. |

Adding to what I said the other night, I listened to Smokin' Delta Voodoo and this disc back to back, and Deeper Shade of Grey is definitely a bit more uptempo and, I think, more immediately catchy. In fact, it might just be my favorite EMN disc. Favoritse would be "Done To Me," "Until I Break," "Hello Darkness," "Bathe Me" and the untitled track. |
