I think Secret Smile had a pretty successful renaissance in the early 2000s, after spending a decade out of the studio, but their 2009 release is a major step down from their previous two CDs. I think a lot of this had to do with their new record label, which seriously neglected the production and delivered a poorly-mixed, amateur-sounding record. Secret Smile's never made particularly complex music, but they're not a band that lends itself to a stripped-back or grungy sound. The title track "This is Our Time Now" and mid-tempo "We Ended Up Okay" are among the most polished and deliver the best example of the group's classic style, but almost every other song feels dull and unenthusiastic. Guitars, keyboards and harmonies are wherever the director decided to slap them. Channel balance is optional. Even decent choruses are undermined by this lack of technical control, making the album very difficult to recommend as a whole. |
