| Looking back on Heep's debut release, it may have been easy to dismiss the group as amateur musical hacks. The press debunked the band from the beginning. The best review gave them the moniker of a poor man's Deep Purple. In one of the worst, a US journalist printed he would commit suicide if the band ever made it. That declairation spread rampantly yet likewise, the group were no public darlings in their native England either. Undoubtedly, front man David Byron had better pipes than Ozzy Osbourne & could challenge Ian Gillan in a squelching match. Debatingly, he had an even better stage presence than either of his contemporaries. His bravado was tarzanesque & his charizma infectious. Perhaps, it all went as it did because they didn't sing of death & the afterlife as Sabbath did, which proved to be hugely marketable. Nor did they have the father of rock riffs, Richie Blackmore. Though Mick Box is more than capable on guitar, he is no guitar hero. Grantingly, their debut was not "In Roc

| Grantingly, their debut was not "In Rock" part 2 but in hindsight, had they been properly promoted, they may have been the band that the world looked to as Fathers of Heavy Metal. Well, maybe that's a stretch as clearly even today they are no household name. Still, the labels, & record companys initially didn't know how to peg the band. Resultingly, they floundered between the pond on both sides of the Atlantic. The UK album art was gothic in it's appearance, depicting a decaying corpse-like bust. In fact, it was David Byron's face that graced the cover as revealed by Mr. Box in various interviews over the years. When the US album finally surfaced, it portrayed a nightmarish creature. Heep's brand of music was heavily organ drenched, wah wah guitar layered, with almost pretty vocals & vocal harmonies. Neither albums art quite fit the musical content. Morevover, the track listings between the two separte debut albums were different because nearly a year had passed between UK & US issues

| As time would prove, for whatever the reason, Heep were left behind to take a back seat but it doesn't diminish the fact that they were a formidable group impacting the infant stages of the heavy rock world for better or in some views, for worse

A very dense debut!!!...a mix of King Crimson,Triunvirat and heavy hard rock of the time..."Gypsy" is probably the best song of the album...tracks 2,5,6 & 7 are also interesting ones...it was not my complete cup of tea at all but is not a bad release either...65/100
