Heavy Harmonies Volunteer

A MAJOR highlight of the year for me (and many others it seems, judging by the rave reviews this one is getting all over the place). All the classic elements of this band are still here, from the The uptempo power pop rockers (the cover of Slade's 'When the Lights Are Out' and 'Sick Man Of Europe' being 2 great examples),to the heartfelt Zander sung acoustic ballads which they are so good at, even the 'Dream Police' strings are there in full force on some tracks. The songwriting is back BIG time again (a major reason why the last album 'Rockford' was so good too) and the consistency of the material on here is truly excellent throughout. My one minor groan is that there are too many of the mid tempo and ballads towards the end and maybe a slight reshuffle in the tracklist would make this run a little more smoothly, but that is only a very minor niggle.

...Robin Zander still sounds fantastic and really is one of the best there is at this game, even after all these years. The rest of the band are playing with a renewed freshness aswell, which was first really obvious on 'Rockford' back in 2006 and something they had maybe lost in part from the mid 80's onwards, because of the 80's gloss and outside writers. 'The Latest' is a fantastic disc, better and more varied than 'Rockford' in my opinion and one that goes some way of showing that these 'Old Timers' still have something relevent and fresh on offer in 2009.

Nothing different, nothing new,but they are still Cheap Trick brand. They have been doing this for more than 30 years but they are still great.

Sorry but this sucks .Its so soft only women may like it Miss Tomorrow sounds like Suede on dope. A major disappointment indeed Too european and soft to say the least. No highlights just one big mass of midiocre sounds. Come on guys dont be cheap do the trick!

I think Jez nails it there for me too. I prefer it to Rockford as well.....which is a great disc, but this release displays a wider pallette of sounds and styles. Again towards the end the ballads and mid tempos slow the thing down a little, they're great songs..especially Everybody Knows but as Jez pointed out they need to be spread around the album rather than clumped together, a mistake Aerosmith made on Get a Grip...too many ballads too close together and said album is better on random play. Having said that it doesn't become apparent untill track 11 .... so make of it what you will, a blistering album for me up to that point. As Jez also points out Zander's pipes are still the business, this guy must never talk to save his voice!!! Briliant. So I'll give this 8.5/10, the songs individually would probably bring it up to 9 but the block of ballads loses it half a point.

Another fine release by the classic Cheap Trick...this band is still somehow underrated with hardly any recognition beyond their country of origin(probably Japan is an exception)...they did not sell out completely in the 80's when they tried to change into the AOR territory with 2 or 3 albums orientated to that sound (very good albums by the way..you know which albums i'm talking about)but then returned to their classic sound wich is a mix of pop,new wave(a little)and rock..after the nice short intro comes "When The Lights Are Out" which is a very good yet quite poppy track,"Miss Tomorrow" is a highlight,"Sick Man Of Europe" is another goodie,it rocks,"Miracle" is Beatle-ish(something that is not strange in their sound as The Beatles is i think their main influence,"California Girl" cool,"Alive" moody,"Times Of Our Lives" is my favourite with that AOR sound,is very good semi ballad and to finish "Closer,The Ballad Of Burt And Linda" a very good one too.Buy & enjoy!.90/100

Saw them on Heaven Tonight tour in '78 and then just last week at Greeley Stampede in Colorado, USA. Still a great band! They played Sick Man from The Latest.
