Almost as good as the first album, which is saying a lot! 9.5/10 |

These guys absolutely rawk! I met Bryan Small last week in Detroit when The Hangmen opened for Social Distortion. Great guy, great band. The new live CD is incredible too. |

The song titles "Broke, Drunk and Stoned" and "Loners, Junkies and Liquor Stores" pretty much sum this band up. After a decade away (lots of hints about much of it spent in rehab or on the slide generally). L.A. punks like Mike Ness and Keith Morris love these guys, yet the music isn't really punk, except in spirit. If Izzy and Duff never met Axl or Slash, they might sound like this, as a lot of songs remind you of "Dust 'n Bones"-like GnR. Bryan Small's voice is nasal and distinctive, but with almost a Tom Petty quality to it to go along with the simple, rootsy songwriting, like implied southern-rock. The typical hair-metal or AOR lover isn't going to get this. A good disc, but not exactly a feel-good despite being generally uptempo. Thiss is the Heavy harmonies equivalent of outlaw country. Best songs are the two I mentioned way back at the beginning, plus "Downtown," "Shoot," "Is That All There Is" and "Blue Light." |
