Love this cd. Very classic Skynyrd here with some gems that don't get overplayed on the classic radio stations. 9/10.

A perfect Southern Rock record. 9.5/10. (Half a point deducted because "Call Me The Breeze" is overplayed.)

Skynyrd's sophomore effort, aptly titled "Second Helping" was delivered shortly after the bands groundbreaking debut of 1973. Mostly noteable for the commercial breakthroughs it made for the southern genre, the album quickly went Gold. With the undeniably radio friendly tune "Sweet Home Alabama" slotting the pole position of the record, Skynyrd were assured a great measure of success. Moreover, Van Zant's penmanship became more whiley & concise, even pointing out "Watergate" & Neil Young as potential problems to the south on the first cut. Furthermore, his irritation of being hasseled either during prolonged road trips or in general by "stupid questions" manifested itself on "Don't Ask Me No Questions". On the first blistering rocker, "Workin for MCA", Skynyrd's label at that time, Van Zant had no problems with confronting mangements mistrust of his money he was due. However, the country flavored "Ballad of Curtis Loew" quickly changes the mood, as Van Zant recalls seeing the finest bl

blues picker of his youth. Continuing on the light-hearted lyrical side, "Swamp Music" is dedicated to good ol' southern blues. Conversly, "The Needle & Spoon" is a timeless anti-drug message that particularly warns of the impending danger of death due to a heroin dependancy. Finally, Skynyrds other single "Call Me the Breeze" is a southern romp where Van Zant delivers a rendition of J.J. Cale's telling of his lifestyle as a rock & roller. As time would proove, only the second track would not be regarded as a classic yet generally this offering is hailed as Skynyrd's best overall effort.

I purchased the Mobile Fidelity 24k gold CD release of this. WHOW! Fantastic!!

till today this is the only album I have heard by kings of southern rock. and I like it very much. everyone here made their best job they could. my faves: sweet home alabama, call me the breeze, the ballad of curtis loew and needle and the spoon.

Very good second release by the kings of southern rock. Sweet Home Alabama speaks for itself but is in no way the best on the album. Workin' For The MCA is a great Rocker as is Don't Ask Me No Questions.
