| Default were just another faceless post-grunge band, perfectly suited to that bland, meaningless name. "Wasting My Time" was a hit at rock radio at a time when nu-metal was starting to wane, and Nickelback and 3 Doors Down were beginning to dominate. Default leans away from Nickelback's overt obnoxiousness, instead erring more on the side of 3 Doors Down's utter forgettability. We spent the previous decade being told that grunge had "something to say," and hey, maybe that's true. Post-grunge, as exemplified by bands like Default, had nothing to say, and said it with great earnestness. The emotion this music evokes is not frustration, or sadness, or anything else active, but instead passive boredom.

| This was about the time I stopped listening to FM radio, or at least cut way, way back. You know how when you were young, you'd sit in your room and just tape songs off the radio—songs that you maybe didn't like enough to buy, or that you liked a lot and you taped them to hold you until you could buy the record? I did that all through the '90's, from the age of 10 to 20. I still have boxes of tapes from those days. But sometime in 2001, my tapes pretty much end. Part of it was just getting older (turning 21). But it was more because I could discover all this cool music online, that radio wasn't touching. And so we parted company, radio and I, to the sound of Default and Hoobastank and a hundred others.

| Listening to "Take 40 Australia" hand poised over the record button just waiting for maybe one good song in a half dozen... yeah I remember that well!

| Hey, Doghouse Reilly, isn't it strange how Heavy Harmonies is so adamantly against music considered "grunge" being on here, yet some of what is considered "post-grunge" is considered okay?

| No shit, man. A band like Default never would have been added in the early years of Heavy Harmonies. But then bands like Hinder and Halestorm came along and were pretty open about their love of '80's metal and AOR, and the "modern hard rock" category got added. I'm cool with that. I'm much more perturbed by the influx of adult-contemporary "yacht rock" and the liberal application of what I call the Cher Doctrine (so named because you can find Cher's three nominY AOR-ish albums listed here, because ... well, because!). As for post-grunge, isn't it funny how so many of those bands lost the plot? So much of what they sing about with such earnestness seems so ORDINARY!
