Excellent!!!Thank you JOHN!!!

From: T-BONE Date: August 11, 2001 at 17:12
Pretty good cd from a very commercial band. Like another Damn Yankees or Contraband. Still worth getting.

From: Parker Lewis Date: October 8, 2001 at 5:53
When I See You Smile and Price of Love are two of the BESTS ballads that I've heard!!!

From: chris c Date: November 15, 2001 at 12:42
Great CD. Any fan of ballads must own this masterpiece!

From: Nimitz Date: November 20, 2001 at 0:12
The Best Ballads are in this Album. Neal Schon is the BEST!!!!!

From: michael s Date: November 27, 2001 at 18:22
I have to agree with all the other comments.A excellent cd. John Waite has a magical voice that cuts right to the heart. While Neal spoon feeds you all the way through each track.

From: koogles Date: January 2, 2002 at 6:28
A much-needed comeback for Waite and a much-needed AOR antidote to hair metal mania back in 1989. Pretty much flawless from beginning to end. A stunning AOR masterpiece, that eclipses everything that Waite had done previous to this. Some of the best ballads you'll hear ANYWHERE are on this CD. Absolutely essential!!

From: holland 4 you Date: January 22, 2002 at 17:14
cool album, wish these days bands make this kind of music but thats a dream!!!!! sad

From: the scarab Date: March 14, 2002 at 15:12
Classic AOR ,the way it should be done.A flawless c.d.

From: Curt Date: March 16, 2002 at 1:45
This is an awesome album and Schon kiks ass as usual. He always has when he's playing with other bands besides journey. He never really gets to show what he's got when playing with Journey, only on a few songs. Jonathon Caine is in the line up also which is a plus. Buy it, you wont regret it.

From: alejandro Date: August 9, 2002 at 15:19
Maybe one of the most perfect AOR albums of all time.

From: Andre Tekken Date: August 16, 2002 at 8:07
Funny is that in the same style Neil is used to compose songs he did in this one sligtly different things.I mean of course it is aor,but not Journey!Toghether with his pal,Jonathan, and awsome, powerhouse drummer Deen Castronovo put toghether this work that consists into a very melodic, thechnical, pomp, romantic record!Jonh doesn't have such a big range in his voice, but at same time his warm voice, fits like a glove, plus give an extra smooth taste to all songs!Great release,I give an 82 out of 10!

From: freddy de keyze Date: September 5, 2002 at 7:45
Absolute topclass AOR. First rating stuff, you can't miss ! This is how AOR should and must sound. Everything is near perfection, the singing, the musicians, the songs and the production. ESSENTIAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From: purrfect kat Date: September 5, 2002 at 7:53
I see Freddy's at it again . . . . lol . . . hiya Freddy . . . . Sometime ya should make a name on the message board so You can come inside and talk about music with the rest of us.

From: PaterSlovenske Date: September 21, 2002 at 15:12
I don't know this album, but I do like Journey (with the fenomenal vocalist Steve Perry and the also fenomenal today fusion musician - plays with Stu Hamm, Scott Henderson, etc. - Steve Smith) and Deen Castronovo does an excellent job on the Working Man (Rush Tribute).

From: Giacomo Date: October 30, 2002 at 12:57
This is one of the best Aor cd ever done. It is very hard to hear something better than this. Songs like 'price of love' and 'when I see you smile' are not songs, but dreams. Thanks to Bad English for this cd, a must for everyone likes Aor and melodic rock music.

From: Baris Date: November 8, 2002 at 8:40
A stormy debut with affective melodies like melting sugar and melancholic lyrics. 'Heaven's a 4 letter word' and 'I'll be the ghost in your heart' are examples of such feelings deeply coming from the heart. Modern day romantic-knight-voice John Waite and other Don Juans know their job quite well. Maybe the inclusion of one or two higher tempo songs would make this an absolute masterpiece but even this form is enough to make it close to a killer release. Satisfaction guarantee.

From: steo Date: January 30, 2003 at 8:21
great power ballads i can hear possession over and over again ,no other song can take me back 10 years so vividly . Truly a great love song a last of its kind ; others would have to agree

From: steve Date: March 27, 2003 at 13:58
i just got this cd a couple of days ago, really good, i agree with holland 4 u too bad don't make good music like this anymore

From: jsm Date: October 6, 2003 at 15:42
One of the best AOR cds I have heard with no doubt!!!

From: AOR freaky Date: November 25, 2003 at 9:10
Both Bad English CD's are GENIAL ! Both are CLASSICS ! This is the finest AOR stuff anyone can imagine ! How can you go wrong with a line-up like this ! BUY !

From: Jimbo Date: November 25, 2003 at 23:17
Sorry to all the above, but I'm going to have to disagree. As much as I wanted to enjoy this band (an AOR supergroup for sure), I just can't find anything at all interesting about it. Tired songs, arrangements from the Pre-cambrian period, a production that is polished but bland... Did these guys think the picture on the cover was gonna sell the CD for them? The best song on the album is the prom ballad 'When I See You Smile' which is a testament to just how much crap this CD exudes.

From: Kryiis Karl Date: January 17, 2004 at 5:16
Should have been too commercial and sweet candy for me but, hey, I really love this release. Does not fit when you are in a certain mood but perfectly fits sometimes. Though it could not be more commercial, this is it anyway.

From: Andr Date: April 5, 2004 at 20:48
A perfect AOR cd. Together w/ Signal-Loud&Clear, the 2 best of all time in this genre. Neal Schon and John Waite are legends, Jonathan Cain, Ricky Phillips and Deen Castronovo are probably the best back band you can dream. If you love it like I do, I think you should listen to Shadow King (w/ Lou Gramm and Vivian Campbell) and Hush (great band). Of course, When I See You Smile and Price Of Love are great, but Tough Times Don't Last is the greatest AOR song of all time

From: illimey Date: May 2, 2004 at 22:32
aww come on folks! This was OK, nothing more. Jimbo's view ('polished but bland') says it all. I love a good ballad, and have no problem with stuffing albums full of them, however they each gotta have a spark of their own! Most of this album just blurs into one big, smooth, baby's bottom of AOR balladry. Admittedly there are some great individual tracks but the overall effect is.. well I can't think of the right word but it's not a good one!

From: Axe Machine Date: May 13, 2004 at 8:49
Indispensable AOR Debut from this great supergroup with spellbinding guitar licks, smooth keyboards and great vocals. A must for any serious AOR fan. Features some of the best songs to come out of the genre....a must have!

From: jack Date: May 24, 2004 at 6:32
This album sucks!i THINK this band are just trying to fit into the hard rock/metal genre!

From: jack Date: May 24, 2004 at 6:35
Skid row can kick this 'hair metal wannabe band' ass any time. If yer not convinced that this band is not a wannabe, just look at their image and hair.I remember john waite had hair like richard marx or peter catera in the mid 80's but now?

From: Rockhead Date: May 24, 2004 at 6:42
Bad English are NOT a wannabe hair metal band. They are one of the finest melodic bands to come from the AOR genre. Featuring John Waite, Neal Scon, Ricky Philips, Deen Castronovo and Jonathon Cain-these are legends in their field and have outsold Skid Row a thousand times. To compatre Skid Row to Bad English is like comparing Motorhead to Val Doonican. ye gods these analagies are boring

From: Dan Friml Date: May 24, 2004 at 8:07
Well said Rockhead!

From: jack Date: May 25, 2004 at 2:59
I guess you prove a point,Rockhead! But i don't think they outsold skid row a thousand times. They produce only like 3 albums tillnow while skid row has produce more than five!I know there's no point comparing skid row to bad english but, overall skid row got a better singer, guitarist and tons more of attitude too, unlike bad english!if my analogies are boring,i say bad english's music is more boring!

From: Rockhead Date: May 25, 2004 at 4:10
You miss the point -Journey, The Baby's, Bad English, Hardline, HSAS, Successful solo releases. Combine the talent and the sales and my statement is correct

From: Rockhead Date: May 25, 2004 at 4:12
Furthermore Skid ROw released 2 strong albums and 2 pretty mediocre to poor ones. Journey has been releasing high quality product for nearly 4 decades. Add to this the Baby's and the various one off, solo albums and collaborations and there really is no contest.

From: Rockhead Date: May 25, 2004 at 4:15
Skid Row have a better guitarist than Neal Schon. I really don't think so. Neal was playing in Santana at the age of 16 and has been the reference point of guitarists for decades. When either Snake or Scotti have that accolade maybe, just maybe they will be good enough to tune Neal's guitar. YOur comments lack foundation and indeed fact.

From: TIM (2) Date: May 25, 2004 at 4:56
Agree with Rockhead completely, Neal Schon can actually add feeling and emotion to a song. Even on the weaker tracks, his solos make them worth the listen. Any run-of-the-mill metal band can play Skid Row songs. And their new 'Thick Skin' album is bloody terrible.

From: jack Date: May 25, 2004 at 5:56
'Thick skin' indeed is terrible,i must say so but i think its because th other two skid row album(first two) is too good! But i don't agree that bad english or any bands like them can play skid row's music. ithink its the other way round. skid row's music require a 'screamer'like sebastian bach and john can't scream. there is countless debates but there is no doubt that bad english's music is much more boring than skid row's.

From: Rockhead Date: May 25, 2004 at 6:42
Boring-only in your opinion. Your broad based thoughts and comments don't really speak for the majority. Read the other comments!!

From: AOR freaky Date: May 25, 2004 at 7:59
Dear Jack, Rockhead has it right ! I also love Dokken (in my opinion the best of the so called 'hairbands', better than Skid Row, Poison, Warrant, Cinderella, Crue, Ratt etc. etc.), but this band is qua talent and songs miles above all the named acts ! Schon, Waite, Cain, Phillips etc. , do you know what these names mean in the AOR and hardrock genre ! ? These are icons ! And this record is an AOR jewel, from start to end. Timeless class !!!, dear Jack !!! Timeless !

From: Blue Tequila Date: May 25, 2004 at 11:15
I'm not the biggest AOR fan in the world but to rag on this album because they don't play Skid Row's kind of music is completely wrong. Let Skid Row play their own damn music, thats why there here. This album doesn't sound like any of the damn bands your always rattling off jack because they don't want to. These guys went out and created and AOR Classic (to borrow from Freddy). Yet again jack you are comparing apples to oranges, IE: this orange sucks because it doesn't taste like that apple.

From: Rockhead Date: May 25, 2004 at 11:52

SkidRow better than the mighty Bad English ??? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.... jack, what a joke. Thank you to mister Rockhead, Blue Charvel, AOR Freddy, Blue Tequila & Tim to have put things in the right perspective. This eponymous Bad English album is simply a milestone in the history of melodic rock & AOR. The kind of pure emotion these guys could put in only one song is incredible. Here are 13 gems to build an all-time masterpiece. Enjoy !

Mercy!mercy!O.k! o.k!i get it!Guess i have no choice but to agree with you guys!

From: Big Papa K Date: June 12, 2004 at 23:08
I tend to think this is one of the more overrated classics, due to who is involved instead of the final product. One too many ballads also kills the flow of the album. A good album, but not a classic. Despite that, songs such as Heaven Is A 4 Letter Word, Forget Me Not, Possession, and When I See You Smile are great. 7/10

From: Johrn Date: July 3, 2004 at 17:59
A superp classic album, one of the best rock albums ever. Just get it to South Africa again, cant find the CD here. johrne@yahoo.com 10/10

From: Metal Jay Date: August 5, 2004 at 23:59
To compare Neal Schon to either of Skid Row's guitarists is like comparing a car with a house. All three great guitarists, but light years apart style wise. Schon has done great stuff consistently for years and years. Ask either Sabo or Hill who they consider legends, and I am positive Schon's name will come up. I don't want to take anything away from either guy, but let's face it, without Jon Bon Jovi's initial backing and Sebastian Bach's genius, Skid Row never happens. If that's the case, do

From: Metal Jay Date: August 6, 2004 at 0:02
Cont from previous post.........we ever hear of Sabo or Hill? Maybe not

From: Geoff Date: August 16, 2004 at 2:06
Yes, there are certainly fillers here, but holy f*ck when they're good they're good! 'Possession','Forget Me Not','Tough Times Don't Last','Ghost in Your Heart','Price of Love','The Restless Ones' and the beautiful 'Don't Walk Away' are all flawless slabs of melodic rock perfection. The vocals are heavenly and the songs noted just blow my mind. A fantastic release. 9/10

From: Claudio Date: September 5, 2004 at 4:22
Great songs, great hard rock album. John Waite is an Idol.

From: AOR freaky Date: September 5, 2004 at 7:59
Claudio, my friend, this is not a great hardrock album, but a bloody great AOR (!) album !!!

From: Swriter Date: February 9, 2005 at 20:14
a great one and probably the one that started the whole melodic hard rock thing of the late 80's early 90's. Neal and John, what more could u ask for, a top 5 aor masterpiece!!!

From: Aussie Dave Date: March 9, 2005 at 16:05
If you love hard rock/AOR, and don't own both Bad English albums, what are you still doing reading this. Go out and buy them both, NOW!!! Amazing performances by all on board here, and fantastic songwriting. Not a bad track on this album. I thought their second album was a wee bit better, but this is a gem. Ghost In Your Heart, Price Of Love and Restless Ones are unbelievable. When I See You Smile was the big hit, but their are better tracks here. Still one of my all time faves. 9.5/10...

From: Melodiker Date: March 21, 2005 at 7:45
An all time classic AOR album ! 9,5\10

From: Lennie Date: April 18, 2005 at 16:35
Whilst we are on the subject - this is simply an essential purchase. The line up says it all and the songs are an exemplary lesson is majestic AOR songwriting. Oh and by the way Freaky, John sings all right here too ;-) he he

From: AOR freaky Date: September 14, 2005 at 17:22
Spoken of CLASSIC AOR, this one (and also their second one) is certainly a prime example ! Great songs, a magnificent voice, enough keys to please the real fan and not too wimpy !!! IMO one of the very best AOR bands ever. I wished Schon had left Journey for this side-project, cause this band and this line-up blows away Journey. Boy, what a line-up this band had ! SUPERB ! BRILLIANT !!!!! CLASS AOR !!!

From: PAUL Date: September 14, 2005 at 17:34
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!JOHN,NEAL,DEEN,RICKY AND JONATHAN in the same band!I can't imagine a better line-up for an AOR band.'ghost in your heart'is one of the best songs i've ever heard.Tons better than JOURNEY,comparable only with VAN STEPHENSON i think, MAGICAL!!!!!!

From: Nick C Date: September 14, 2005 at 19:18
John Waite could come around your house and sing the menu for the pizza house that you were gonna buy some food from and it would be a masterpiece (not of loneliness). 3 ex-babys on this so how can you go wrong. A total benchmark in the AOR stakes methinks.

I'm in total agreement with Jimbo and illimey on this one. Everything is picture perfect, from the arrangements to the production to the lineup. But... I found it to be missing any spark whatsoever right from day one when it came out. I much prefer Waite's solo material.

From: Jez Date: September 16, 2005 at 6:05
As with the Alias album, one that is mentioned by most and is considered a bit of a classic. Once again I'd say it doesn't quite reach those heady heights , but again isn't far off the mark. I have always found this disc to be about 2 songs too long, as there are a couple of fillers, but otherwise it's fabulous. My faves on this have always been 'Forget Me Not' & 'Ghost In Your Heart', although as Nick says, JW could sing the phonebook and it would sound fabulous.

From: juan carlos Date: December 16, 2005 at 14:23
Sorry.. Dokken 'UP from the ashes'

From: headbanger4life Date: January 4, 2006 at 3:29
Another by the book commercial band made up of 'ex-members'. But this one was fantastic. The whole album was awesome and had a little something for everybody (AOR/Hard Rock). Don't know why they only did two albums. To me this was a 'Super Group' that could have stayed IMO. Instead they all keep moving on to other projects/bands that don't match or out sell this awesome band.

From: Metalmusicman Date: January 1, 2007 at 13:24
This is another one that I have to wonder if I am listening to the same album as everyone else. I do agree that it is a fine piece of AOR, but I felt that it had enough weaker moments to qualify as a hit and miss affair for me. As others have pointed out, what is good is very good. Songs like 'Best Of What I Got', 'Forget Me Not', 'Price Of Love', and the smash ballad 'When I See You Smile' are top notch and then some. A enjoyable listen, but not great in my opinion.

From: ANR Date: March 14, 2007 at 9:44
Nice work in the style of JOURNEY. There are songs which are outstanding here, but also ones that are very 'average' you know. But I've gotta tell you that the track 'Possession' is my absolute favorite love song. Simply amazing... 8/10

From: Kralli Date: August 2, 2007 at 22:17
Bad English has made two of the very best albums of all time! If I hade to choose lets say only 10 records to live with the rest of my life I probably would save at least one of them, maybe both. They are both outstanding and its really hard to seperate them.

From: Rycheage Date: September 30, 2007 at 17:49
I'm in the minority here by saying that this is over-rated. When they are good ('When I See You Smile', 'Price Of Love', 'Ghost In Your Heart', and 'Forget Me Not'- my faves) they are damn good but when they play uninspired music, its filler. I say this falls just short of classic status.

From: edwithmj Date: August 22, 2008 at 16:41
Best Of What I Got is on the soundtrack to Tango and Cash with Sylvester Stallone! Great movie, great song and great band!

From: rockhardrock Date: May 1, 2009 at 9:22
they were great hard rock/aor band and recorded 2 splended albums. the debut is much better for me, cause here's much more memorable songs. this is one of my favourite supergroups. my favs here are: Best of What I Got, Heaven is a 4 Letter Word, Forget Me Not (the winner for me), When I See You Smile, Ghost in Your Heart and Price of Love

From: Billy Victory Date: August 31, 2009 at 13:43
This is just the perfect and classic AOR album of all time, even in 2009. Waite, Schon, Cain, Phillips, Castronovo are among the best line ups in AOR world. Each song in this album is my fave, especially Possession, Rockin' Horse, Ghost In Your Heart.

From: DanDare Date: October 16, 2010 at 19:30
When this first came out it was like a wet dream for me. John Waite fronting Journey, what a joy. The album is a masterpiece and a thing of beauty, as near to perfection as you are going to get, in my book. Loved it then, still love it. Every songs a winner baby.

From: happy2849 Date: December 12, 2010 at 12:01
A must have for any fan of melodic rock/AOR. Johns vocals are great and Neals guitar playing is top-notch. Their first and in my opinion, their best.

From: hair metal again Date: December 14, 2010 at 4:21
hair metal perfection is what you get here!sorry guys but all this aor, aor, aor is totally wrong.when this masterpiece was released nobody called it aor.excellent musicianship, fantastic production by mr richie zito, amazing vocals by this unique voice, dreat songwriting with the help of wiz dianne warren(when i see you smile).i think that hard rock music cant get much better than this

From: edwithmj Date: September 23, 2011 at 17:30
Time to expand on my previous comment. Best of What I Got is a feel good rocker, Heaven is a 4 Letter Word is my favourite song off the album, Ghost in Your Heart is a very melodic, keyboard driven ballad, Price of Love is another great ballad with perfect vocals and melodies while Tough Times Don't Last is another love-driven rocker. With band members such as these, nothing less than a perfect melodic AOR album could be made.

From: rick kerch vzla Date: December 2, 2011 at 18:58
Killer debut...didn't have the chance to review it,intead of i've reviewed their second one(a long time ago btw)..this release showed us how good and powerful a band can be in writing and composing songs...led by the charismatic singer John Waite plus the guitar maestro Neal Schon and 3 other skilled and professional guys...Bad English basically was meant to take the world by storm but failled on its way to do so ...why?..that is the $10.000 dollar question...anyway my faves in here are the ones that got radio aired,obviously(1,2,4,5 & 8)plus these 2 also that are simply awesome too("The Restless Ones" & "Don't Walk Away"(nice))...recommended album...95/100

totally agree with others comments.it s a very brilliant and very fine a o r record.each song sweat the class.perfect production, superb singer (what voice of mr john waite.yes it s a killer a o r album and in short a classic.neal schon says to rock time (french magazine) that they have 45 !!!!songs for this record ,but he take no pleasure with bad English cause the atmosphere between the different members of the band was awful.each member think that he is a star and the best of the band.i m very curious to listen the others 32 songs.no bonus track on the japan import.

AOR Perfection! This is one of the best albums of all time! Great Line Up, Arrive just in time to be a killer album! It´s a shame that they only recorded 2 albums! John Waite is one of my favourite singers, teaming with Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain for the songwriting is a dream. Every song have the potential to be a hit.

Very good songs, pure AOR. However, to me it sounds a bit too polished. I always wait for Waite and Schon to explode, but that never happens...

Wow! That's the first time I've ever heard "AOR" as a descriptor and "too polished" as a complaint in the same sentence. It's AOR! Of course it's too polished! It ain't like Schon and especially Waite have such a history of "exploding." So, Bad English: one of several "supergroups" of the late '80's, made up of guys whose old, successful AOR bands were were history. So they took a look around and decided to put on some leather for a "metal" image, while cranking out more workmanlike, keyboard-drenched, vanilla-milkshakemusic. Only your mom mistook this for hard rock back in the day. Best song here is the vaguely threatening, stalker-like "Forget Me Not."

Doghouse, you're right this is very polished but I think it's on the harder end of the AOR spectrum and certainly wouldn't call this vanilla-milkshakemusic at all! I've never understood the contempt some on this site have for keyboards - most of my favourite albums on here have keyboards and this is no exception. Forget Me Not is a strange favourite with such great tracks to choose from on here. I still listen to this album a lot since it's one of my favourites and I've come to appreciate the whole thing - even my least favourites, When I See You Smile amd Lay Down.

Not only the ballads are the highlights, but also songs like 'Ghost in Your Heart' and 'Tought Times Don't Last' are true masterpieces. Very good album indeed, and very well produced. I have some live shows in Dvd. If you're interested send me an e-mail: tito.the.titan@gmail.com

Just got this on vinyl and forgot just how wonderful this album is. Especially today when music just isn't created in this manner. Every aspect, IMHO, is just phenomenal to these ears. 97 / 100

Forget Me Not is the best song ever written about being in love with a vampire.
