Long hair? Check. Yellow and black bumblebee logo? Check. Signature '80s hard rock sound? Umm... NOT. I understand the need for an artist to "grow" and "find themselves" musically, but when they radically shift musical genres, it leaves one with a quizzical look on one's face (not to mention ears). This is not your grandfather's Stryper. This is NirvStoneChainsSoundTemplesAlicesvana city. If it weren't for the fact that it's a former Stryper member, I wouldn't be reviewing this disc, since I abhor grunge/alternative music. I simply cannot listen to this disc; the musical genre that Robert has chosen to express himself within is one that I find philosophically and aurally repugnant. Not only was grunge the harbinger of the mainstream demise of real hard rock and melodic metal, but tonally it is built on a foundation of dischord and disonance rather than that of major chords. *shudder* The above notwithstanding, the disc is extremely well recorded and produced, and from a technical standpoint I cannot find fault with the musical performances. Every now and then the choruses show a brief flash of the melodic elements I was expecting, but then the guitar and bass lines hit and we're back to grunge city. For those that are devout Robert Sweet fans and/or are fans of the mid-'90s alternative scene, you may find musical pleasure within. I, however, cannot. Rating: 55/100 |

If you are looking for stryper style music. Then you are looking in the wrong place. This is not a very good album. |

I met Robert Sweet almost 7 years ago when he was with King James. Awesome music, bad singer, but hey...it was Robert. It was all about him for me at that time. I was surprised when he put this CD out. It isn't him at all! |

Again, the Sweet brothers will do whatever to make money. Bandwagon? Jump on it! Find a way to capitalize on current trends even though we aren't even close to being trendy? Why not? Stryper as a concept was goofy. It was a sham. At least Robert had the balls to say, "Listen, I just want to rock, get paid and get laid." At what point do we cut off the 70's hairdo and produce other bands? It gets pathetic after a while. |
