Quick backstory, I was aware of the band Ghost, but assumed they would have an abrasive/tuneless/nu-metal sound, I happened to hear the song "Rats" on the radio and really liked it, looked up who the artist was and was surprised it was Ghost. Prequelle is a great CD, catchy songs, melodic vocals and guitar solos, some great riffs, etc. There is a lot of orchestration the accompanies the songs, but the foundation is hard rock. I would describe their sound as a modern mix of Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper.

This is actually Ghost's fourth full-length album. Kind of a hard call between HeavyHarmonies and BrutalMetal. Musically, it's mostly '70's/early-'80's hard rock and metal going on. Blue Oyster Cult get cited often for some reason. But the overtly occult theme and corpse-painted, hooded appearance make them seem more appropriate for the other site (and also makes it hard to know how seriously to take them, along with the whole Nameless Ghoul schtick). There's not much faulting the actual music though, except when they occasionally get too overblown and melodramatic. But stuff on here like "Rats" and "Dance Macabre" are just plain good rock songs. SOomehow, I don't know if it's the gimmick or what, but Ghost have become quite popular, with several maintream radio hits. The songs are well-crafted and played, and if nothing else, it beats the hell out o whatever warmed-over postgrunge crap is on the air the rest of the time.

The fact is, we live in an age where new, guitar-oriented rock musicc is fairly rare in the culture at large. You look at the Billboard Hot 100: there's no hard rock (and almost no guitar-based rock of any kind) on it. Over to the Mainstream Rock charts, and it's almost all bands that are 15-20 years old. So whether we like them or not, Ghost, or Volbeat, or even the haplessly retro Greta Van Fleet, deserve credit for being successful on a macro scale as a "loud rock" band.

Outstanding album-- The Ghost of the past did nothing for me but this newest gem is amazing. Every song has me singing along. Even the instrumentals get me tapping my feet (Saxophone solo is great). Go in with an open mind and you will not be disappointed. Cant wait for a visit from the Ghost of the future.

Gotta say I would love this album if not for the ridiculous Satanism. Seriously, the lyrics are the sort that are scrawled in faeces across a serial killer's bedroom walls. Both puerile and gross. Pity that such talent is wasted.

Ha ha, complaining about satanic lyrics (which really are not that over the top anyway) is no different to Stryper and their ilk singing about god. I love Stryper, but so much of their lyrical output is cringe inducing. Just enjoy the music for what it is not some bollocks religous outrage. Ghost write catchy as fuck songs and lyrically, whether you agree with them or not, they are hardly "puerile and gross" or the works of a serial killer. And anyway, nobody is forcing you to listen to them.
