this is a classic much in the likes of the brilliant 1986 Craaft debut. ROKO himself is now known for his excellent production work for acts like Vanden Plas. This album however is a must have for fans of good melodic rock. AAA++++

A great album. Straight melodic hard rock. Strong riffs, egaging chorus. the voice remind me Darren Wharton(Dare). I remember the video of 'One night stand' saw on Headbanger's ball long ago.

TOP notch melodic/rock, with killer guitar riffs, awesome keyboards, and strong back-up vox. A MUST!!! Empty the piggy bank and buy this CD!!! Collecting for 18 years...

Hey Scott, What's their second album like?
|
From: Scott |
Date: August 10, 2002 at 1:48 |
David... The 2nd album, Open Invitation, is right on par with the first (never mind the 5.5 rating on this site! That's insane!). If you don't have that one yet, then empty your kid's piggy bank and buy it!! I'm working on getting the 3rd, Think About Tomorrow. The 4th release, Fantasy, is a departure... more of an AOR solo effort by Kohlmeyer. Stay metal!!

Not being a fan of Euro Melodic metal I must say that this CD is really good!!! It doesn't get as sticky as some Casanova or Pink Cream 69 stuff, If you like Melodic metal then buy this, its great

One of those CDs where the middle tracks (#6-9) are the most impressive. I even hear a bit of Tony Harnell in Roko's voice at times. All in all, this adds up to a fine release. If you like TNT, Bonfire, Red Dawn etc. check this one out!

Dug this CD out recently when having a clear out at home. Played it just once and instantly got into it again. Good, melodic, catchy rock which will never lose its appeal.

I bought this in 1990 when it was first released. This is still one of my favourite CDS in my collection. I hope some record company like MTM re release the CDS from this sadly missed band. The cd has a good balance of rockers and ballads. One night stand and Jane are outstanding tracks.5 out of 5.

Increible banda alemana de Hard Rock Melódico, buena voz, buenas guitarras, y vamos bueno de todo, para mí un 11 sobre 10. A ver si vuelven otra vez y disfrutamos todos de Roko otra vez. Muy buena 'Hot nights in Africa', y 'One night stand', y balada romántica 'Could you be my love', saludos a todos!

In my opinion, this rates as one of the best German AOR/melodic rock albums of the era. It's got everything really .. power, melody, songs, and a red hot production. The pomp powerhouses of 'Take It Easy' and the immense 'Looking For Love', the rather AOR radio friendly 'Burnin' Hearts' and 'Fantasy', the subtle intensity of 'Don't Turn Around' and two magical ballads in the form of 'Could You Be My Love' and the awesome 'Hold On'. The choruses on both of these are KILLER!!!!! Get this NOW!!

If you like early Bonfire or Craaft or No Credit or Fair Warning's debut then you're really missing something if you don't have this. The ballads are incredible, and only 'Satisfaction' is anywhere near a filler track. 'Open Invitation' is pretty good, and worth having too, but do not miss this. 9.5/10.

Hey Tim, how do Roko compare to bands like Bonfire, 220 Volt, Treat, Dalton, Europe, etc?
|
From: TIM (2) |
Date: July 5, 2004 at 4:42 |
Hey Rocker76, they're probably a touch heavier than some of those bands, except 220 Volt (who I really don't like anyway). Seeing as you love Bonfire I'd be very surprised if you don't like this, it really isn't a million miles from 'Fireworks'. The vocals are a touch heavier on the accent, but otherwise is fairly similar. Of those you mentioned, probably Dalton's 'Injection' is the best comparitor...
|
From: TIM (2) |
Date: July 5, 2004 at 4:44 |
p.s. As a Bonfire fan, make sure you get the first (at least) Casanova album, is in a similar vein to the 2nd and 3rd Bonfire albums (although not quite as good). Their later albums are pretty decent too, but the first is essential.

Thanks for the info Tim! I have Casanova's 'One Night Stand' album (great stuff) and have heard similar raves about their debut. This Roko album sounds like it's right up my alley. I'll definitely keep an eye out for both of them...thanks again!

Skimming through the comments I saw Koogles mention tracks 6-9 is where it picks up and I was going to say myself that the album doesn't really kick in until track 6. From there on it's quite impressive, but I much prefer the album that came next. I expected a lot but would be lying if I said I wasn't let down a little. Good solid melodic hard rock, but not the best ever.

Yeah Other great album of Hard melodico/AOR, compare to Bonfire or Dalton(not so good like this but is a great band) is well, All album have good songs, i don't have fav song in this case, a complete album.

This is indeed a good melodic hard rock album, BUT... the thing that bothers me is that many of these songs (particurarly in the second half of the CD) sounds far too "samey". Choruses, song structures etc... a little more variation could not have hurted. A shame, since the band have a lot of potential. Still, as mentioned previously, this is a good CD and recommended if you like Bonfire, Craaft and bands in that vein.

My fave song on this album is SATISFACTION. Very good song that sound very much like AXXIS (from their debut album), nearly melodic heavy metal. The rest of the album is good too but that is my fave ROKO song ever.

(fuck i don´t know.. i always think of :shit) the drums are so basic , the guitars are similar, no bass, and the vocals are german trying to sing in english. i don´t know what is heppening with your ears........but try to clean them,... at least once a month!!!

Hey metalizzer,I would know your personal fave bands(if exist)and your age, you've spoken about 50/60's period, are you older or it's your fave music period?BTW first 2 Carcass discs are considered cult in gore/grind scene, their 3rd and 4th releases were among the most original and personal death metal new sound-approach,the last one"swansong"was an excellent way of how to play death'n roll..I would find some more extreme metal stuff here'cause on"metal-archives"you can find lots of melodick bands

Big sounding hard rocker; produced pretty well; catchy songs with a hard edge; Roko's voice is pretty good also; has a higher range; pretty good musicians all around; disc is satisfying if you're in to 80's catchy hard rock with keys and plenty of hooks; Could You Be My Love and Burning Hearts are my 2 favorties from the disc; some other good songs too; 13 catchy melodic hard rockers - the majority of which are pretty good; I would say though you can get bored with a few. 78/100

Looks like the overwhelming majority like what they hear here. Chalk me up as well.....What you get is very good kick-a** hard rock in the vein of VICE meets BONFIRE with the addition of keyboardist Jurgen Beitel. You get some great guitar riffing and backup vocals which add to the total package. Just guessing, but anyone who is turned off by this album must not really be a melodic rock devotee.

I remember seeing Roko live as a support act(if my memory does not fail)to Helloween(they had just edited this debut album)...the previous band Roko Kohlmeyer had,JOJO,didn't help him at that time mainly because of the different music direction(JOJO was more into the Hi Tech AOR side)and many of the expectators that assited and dind't know this new act thought probably Roko was in the same line as JOJO..so many expectators were drinking beers in the hall of the Hammesmith Odeon...kinda funny anecdot ...anyway talking about this album, well it has great songs IMO...my favorites are the ones that are more into the AOR territory("Burnin' Hearts","Don't Turn Around","Fantasy","Looking For Love" & "On My Way")plus the extra goodie ones "One Night Stand","Jane"(nice J.S. cover),"Satisfaction" & "Take It Easy"(these last 2 songs rock!) & "Hold On"(nice ballad)...anyway a matter of tastes but for me this debut album smokes!!!...recommended...93/100
