Pleasant Southern Rock/AOR release typical of the guys who have been involved with 38 Special ![]() |

for obscure reasons this jewel never see the light of day in 1989.thanx to andrew mc neice from melodic rock records to put right this error.the list of the musicians who plays on this record is impressive.the very high quality is at the rendez vous.this masterpiece is at the same level than the 38special s records of the eightieis."looking for you" is a real hit totally in the vein of 38special.."ride the storm" and "after the way" are the best songs of this realise.these two songs are two atomic bombs.all the other songs are really excellent.if you re fan ,like me,of 38special this cd is for you.impossible to be disapointed.the ice on the cake is that we have three bonus tracks.track 12 "looking for juliet "is a poor ballad wich have no interest .but "through the eyse of love" and "let s talk about love" are two super songs ,two hits wich deserve to be directly on the record not add in bonus tracks."ride the storm" is the best surprise of 2017. |

Not to much to add to this. If you are a fan of 80s 38 Special then this will be right up your street. A pretty much faultless album of Southern Aor. Brilliant! |

Don Barnes - Ride The Storm (1989) with players like: Don Barnes - vocals, guitars; Martin Briley - keyboards; Jesse Harms - keyboards; Alan Pasqua - keyboards; Dann Huff - guitars; Tim Pierce - rhythm guitars; Mike Porcaro - bass; Jeff Porcaro - drums; Denny Carmassi - drums this album is promising to say the least!! ULTRA-TALENTED bunch (same year as that MEGA Giant debut disc too), but you also need the SONGS, and are they there too? Yes, they are! Don Barnes is no fool, he's a very smart guy, so he compiled both the songs and the players, so unbelievable that it did not come out in 1989 as planned. Despite label politics. First song "Lookin' For You" is such a HIT that should have been, great album. Many of us also LOVE 38 Special, so as no surprise this album fits right in, get it! JK Northrup has remastered to good result (he avoided the horrible loudness effect), and original mix by Brian Malouf is amazing. Almost 3 decades later, it was out, ear candy! Full score. |

I come here some years after the MR issue (2-CD, a nice one!), have to agree with above paul.norm and adolfo. Some find a filler, perhaps two in 2nd half, but mostly full of killer songs; well-written, catchy/38 Special-Don-Barnes-y, and of course it's an extra bonus that he at the time of 89 managed to get to work with the ultra-talented bros of Toto fame (Bass – Mike Porcaro, Drums – Jeff Porcaro, gotta love 'em, and a few extra guitar lines/chords by the admired Tim Pierce and Dann Huff of GIANT). But mostly, this is DON BARNES fine works thru and thru; excellent vocals and he's also great at the guitar, also can shred some rockin' solos, make no mistake. Thanks to MelodicRock Records for including the ORIGINAL and BEST mix, by the co-producer of the album, who mixed and mastered, namely Brian Foraker. I get what the remix (disc 1) tried to do, get a crisp modern sound. |

But they overdid it! Let me explain. Disc 2 by Brian Foraker has more bombastic and loud drums AND bass (sounds rich and not so flat as disc 1), and Don's vocals and keyboards, the MID, is way louder in this original ('89 I think?) mix, making it sound much closer to 38 Special and Rodney Mills' sound. No need to re-mix really, when the original is this good! So I feel calling it "Alternate Mix" is actually misleading, since disc 2 is truly the "original 1989 mix". To my ears, it's much fuller richer and sounds a lot better, so I will use it for my compilations. After 1988, 38 Special lost their contract with A&M Records, and the same label did not manage to release this Don's solo album in '89 (said due to A&M Records being sold). They had a little of bad luck for some years there, after the platinum era, but came back strong with Resolution 1997 and always, to this day, play to decent audiences. Plenty of people still totally love this band, all albums they did were solid! |

The ONLY song I really don't like and that is not good enough among the other great songs is the annoying Chicago cover song (Feelin' Stronger Everyday). But Ride the Storm, Looking for You, I Fall Back, Don't Look Down, I'd Do It All Over Again and After The Way are all KILLER songs. If these and some goodies with Donnie Van Zant had become a follow up to Rock & Roll Strategy, that would have been a fans album for sure. I personally love just about all songs on both the 88 and 91 albums (solid all through), but Don Barnes great vocals, songs and guitars, were at the forefront of the band's platinum successes, it can't be denied! Hofmann, I agree some with you. But I think the cymbals were made softer on the rock/disc1 version, and I prefer that aspect a lot. Other than that the original mix is warm and cosy. Both are very good, of course. Vocals feels louder in the original too, and they are so good. |
