I'll start off with a caveat: I'm not a big blues fan. It's just not my thing. So take this review with a grain of salt. Let's see... how do I describe this album? Hmm... How about Bad Company meets Jimi Hendrix meets Stevie Ray Vaughn? It's kind of hard to put a finger on it exactly. It has a very stripped back "raw" sound (by this I do NOT mean underproduced), just gruff and rough. No silky layerings here, just solid hard rock. The disc has a very "classic rock" feel, as if the band were back in the 1970s. Unlike most blues that I've encountered, this has a nice crisp harder edge to it. David's vocals are quite distinctive. If this were a different style of music I'd most likely by unimpressed by his vocals, but the roughness lends itself particularly well to this (for lack of a better term) "blues metal". If anything, his vocals give an air of "authenticity" to the tracks, whereas someone with a smoother voice just wouldn't fit in. I also must say that this disc really shines instrumentally! It's got grooves and hooks all over the place. The guitarwork is top-notch and the band is tight! As one would expect from a blues album, most of the tracks are slower to mid-tempo. You get an occasional up-tempo groove here and there, but no blistering barn-burners. If you like blues with a heavier edge, this is the disc for you! Rating: 82/100
