Picks up where "Power" left off. Steve Morse's playing is absolutely incredible on "House on Fire" & the stormin' "Rainmaker". This is a loosely-structured concept album whose songs are just as effective on their own as part of the whole. "Stand Beside Me", "Once in a Lifetime" & "One Man, One Heart" are personal favorites. "Ghosts" features some of the most haunting and powerful vocals I have ever heard come out of Steve Walsh. And did I fail to mention how incredible Bob Ezrin's production is?

You can get it in the bargain bins and this is more than you'd bargain for. This was an era when Kansas was trying brave, new things and getting back bupkus commercially or critically. There's soul ("Once In A Lifetime"), there's Genesis-pop ("Stand Beside Me"), there's pseudo-blues ("The Preacher"), there's piano ballads ("Ghosts"), and acousti-instrumentals ("T.O. Witcher") that would make Steve Howe cry. A fascinating, eclectic set.

Certainly nowhere near as famous as albums like 'leftoverture' or 'point of know return', and that is possibly because this album has a far more mainstream sound without certain unique 'kansas' elements. However let's just forget the baggage (superb though it undoubtedly is) and listen to this album without any preconceptions.. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! It has everything a fan of melodic, intelligent music could possibly want. It is the Kansas album I play the most. Haunting and powerful indeed!

I've seen "One Man, One Heart" pop up on a few albums since, and quite rightly as it's mega-classic AOR. I never got the whole concept thing, but still LOVE the album. Whereas "Power" is now sounding very dated, this still sounds fresh to this day. Awesome songs, awesome production.

Look, who got involved in the song writing, Dann Huff, that man again. So it's not surprising that this album is a MUST for any AOR/melodic rock fans.

Technically sound and the production is quite clear and crisp. They have come up with one of their best and probably under appreciated CD yet. Steve Walsh is in rare form and Steve Morse's guitar antics make this an immediate must-own. "Rainmaker" and "House On Fire" show this point. Great stuff.

Unbelievable release. I was in HMV in Manchester and checking out the album sleeve trying to decide whether to buy it (I wanted it on CD but they only had it on vinyl) and the security guy Ken was hanging around.. as soon as I put it back in the rack he grabbed it and said "I'm glad you put that back there's someone on the phone who wants to reserve it!". There is a loose theme to the album as explained in the CD booklet notes, and atmospherically it has the best start to a Kansas album ever..10

Listening to this album once again and being more specific about the songs, the best ones for me are "One Big Sky" & "Inside of Me" then some other fine moments are tracks 4,6(nice),7,8(rocks a bit)& 10(a nice short acoustic guitar one)...as everybody know the band went AOR in the mid 80's so there's a good mix of Prog Rock and the aforementioned genre in here.85/100
