I think this is Catleys best solo effort so far. Empires has more of a Magnum feel and a heavier sound than Catleys previous releases. Strong songwriting, good hooks and XLNT production. Catley get's to make full use of his voice. Clearly my choice of Catley albums. Make sure to get the release with the two bonus tracks. Heaven can wait and When the Earth lies still. Heaven...is one of the best songs on the disc.

Top album. This must be one of the top releases of 2003.....I can only see Hugo's new album "Fire in the Night" bettering this baby. GET IT!

The switch of songwriter to keysman Paul Hodson has done the trick - Empires sees the Catley-solo band turn the corner from 'very good but not very memorable' to 'very good, some excellent & memorable tracks, and CAN'T WAIT to see what they can do next!'. Succeeds where so many AOR bands fail:- is bold enough to push its own identity on you rather than pandering to preconceptions. "My America" *could* become a rock-folksong for the ages.

Bob Catley has the best voice in English rock ever! At their best, his main squeeze Magnum are utterly amazing, and Bob shows in his 'solo' stuff that his voice is one of the main reasons Magnum can be so captivating. If you crave emotion, power and melody in your music then look no further. His three albums written by Gary Hughes were excellent - Middle Earth being the best to this Tolkien fan's ears, but WEB exceeds excellence. 'My America' is simply stunning - Gary Moore meets Rainbow!! 10/10

I hope this is better than that crappy "Middle Earth" CD.

This is a brilliant CD-Catley's best and up there with Storytellers, Chasing and Vigilante.

From: illimey Date: March 27, 2004 at 15:10
Yup - this is indeed a brilliant CD and it certainly doesn't fall down when compared to Magnum's best. Just in case y'all haven't heard, Magnum's new album 'Brand New Morning' is due out August 30th (in the UK at least) and according to various sources IT IS THE BEST MAGNUM HAVE DONE FOR DECADES! I am drowning in my own drool right now..., 'cos Magnum at their best are unbeatable in their genre. Visit melodicrock.com for full track listing and times under the news for March 25th.

This is totally unbelievable!! Great melodies and songwriting, and of course the incredible vocals by Bob!

From: Geoff Date: October 15, 2005 at 3:34
For me this is easily the best solo outing from the man in question. Good ballsy effort, with some great melodic rockers like tracks 2 and 3, 'Ill be your fool', 'Every beat of my heart' and 'Meaning of love'. All great melodic hard rock tracks with good solid choruses. Not a fan of all the tracks, but never have been when it comes to Bob and Magnum, but the above are all very pleasant.
