Heavy Harmonies Review
From: Dan Date: March 17, 2003 at 0:11
Been hearing both good and bad about this one. Well, over the last few days I've given it "the listening test" (dark room, high-grade headphones, no distractions). Verdict: a considerable jump up from the lacklustre Spellbound. Yes it's heavier in places, but still extremely melodic. It's a concept album, set in the distant future, an epic tragedy. At this point it ends up in the #3 spot of Ten albums, behind the S/T and Name of the Rose. I'm still annoyed by the production/mix; the Ten albums could be SOOOOOO much better if they were mixed differently. As someone else mentioned, it's as if Gary tries to fill every gap of silence with a wall of sound. It's too much. Almost a sensory overload at times. Towering layers and choruses are a good thing, but it's as if one is perpetually assailed by music; in many places there's simply too much going on. Also, the vocals get lost in the mix in places, becoming difficult to discern; somewhat annoying.

That being said however, since this is true of ALL of the Ten albums, from a musical perspective I think it's a winner. Some excellent balladry (nothing new there). I've always liked the timbre of Gary's voice; It's one of my favorites, a rich velvety voice... an aesthetic thing I guess. I particularly like the addition of Don Airey on keys. It adds something to the whole picture that was missing as of late. Some very catchy melodies on this one.

Rating: 90/100

WOW!!! "Give in This Time", "Silent Rain" and "Black Hearted Woman"!!! A must have... a must cry for!!!

From: Mark Date: August 13, 2001 at 20:58
Great work again by TEN, but I must quibble with the production. There are times during the verse that you can barely make out the lyrics over the instruments. This may partly be due to Gary's vocal style at times, and it doesn't seem to occur during the choruses. Still, without the liner notes right in front of you, there are times when the words get overwhelmed by the music. This album could have benefitted a lot from a better mix. The songs are outstanding, they could sound a bit better.

And so on, Mark? Give In This Time is the best Ten song!!! It kicks the biggest ass in the world!

From: freebone Date: January 21, 2002 at 8:52
After reading Ten's reviews, I had to have their cds. I went and got the self titled, the name of the rose, the robe, spellbound, babylon, and far beyond the world. Am I missing something here? The are AVERAGE at best! Its no surprise now why they haven't made it in the States! If you have all the cds that you want, then I'd pick TEN up, and only then.

From: jfree68 Date: February 7, 2002 at 17:15
I agree with freebone, these guys are the most over rated, over hyped, nontalented band out there! Do NOT waste your money on this over keyboard saturated, generic crap!

From: Ten Fan Date: April 6, 2002 at 23:41
Freebone, I can't imagine why you would go out and buy a band's ENTIRE CATALOG before you knew if you liked them! Maybe read the reviews and if they sound great, buy ONE of their CDs? Then, if you like them, buy more. Hello, McFly? Anybody home?

From: xavieskay Date: March 31, 2003 at 22:46
greeeeeeeeaaaaaatttt!! dirty production but every song is a masterpiece! buy, buy, gary never change!

From: Chris Date: June 3, 2003 at 8:40
As if the 'best of ten' wasn't bad enough, they come right back and do another album. Is there no getting away from this bag of crap.

From: Rycheage Date: July 3, 2003 at 15:58
Ten is a somewhat acquired taste, but for me, I am sold on the band. Their last album assured that and the fact the intense production and style of that album have been mixed with the more favored melodic influence of their debut, plus adding touches of Gary Hughes' solo album, mean this album for me is possibly their best to date. That time will tell. Already established Ten fans will love it, others that have resisted thus far will probably continue to do so.

From: Janxy Date: October 21, 2003 at 12:16
A futuristic concept album about love, power, jealousy, murder and revenge. As with every Ten album you are guaranteed some stand-out masterpieces. The most crisp production of all the Ten albums thus far but still some work to be done in that department. The story is a little weak but its the love of the music that really counts.

I will agree with Dan. Maybe the #3 Ten album.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, black hearted woman, que tema”, el mejor de ten, un gran disco 9,5/10

From: Big Papa K Date: June 15, 2004 at 16:15
Like others, I do have a problem with the production on this album. Also, the concept is stupid. The individual songs are strong though, especially "Barricade", "Give In This Time", and "Black Hearted Woman". 7/10

From: Almir Date: June 18, 2004 at 18:36
This is the best album of my collection (and I have a lot!) A concept album that you can hear track by track individually with no problem at all. But if you follow the hole story, by the time you reach "Valentine" you'll be misty eyed The mixing issue...some may like it, some may not. Everybody got different tastes. IMHO it's just 9.5/10. Not even that last one beats Babylon.

From: Wotty Date: August 25, 2004 at 18:40
An overlooked conceptual mini-masterpiece in my humble opinion.Clever writing from Gary with the future being the setting. But as previous and latter day CDs prove,no era of time seems to phase him.A talent to be admired.I hope my cheque is in the post after all that meandering.....

From: Geoff Date: August 25, 2004 at 20:44
I must say that this one might just be my favourite Ten release. Not too sure at all because before the new one I liked a lot of them. This is a great, heavy melodic hard rock album and I love concept albums done well. 'Give in this time' is probably my fave, but not many I dislike here at all...

From: Jonny_B Date: September 3, 2004 at 22:33
Despite the production, "Babylon" still my favorite Ten album to-date, and one of my top 10 favorites of all time. I don't think they'll ever top this album in terms of songwriting ever again.

Well after 4 1/2 years i'm going out on a limb to say that this is my favoutite Ten album. I'm sorry but last night I couldn't find any faults - it is just a bombastic melodic monster. Hughesy is in top form with some of his vocal melodies and my god although not completely original the songs are friggin fantastic. The concept is a complete embarrasing farce but the music is out of this world. I love Ten's sound so for me it's just world class.

From: lalorock Date: August 16, 2006 at 23:07

What can i say ! Another Masterpiece ! Perfect Music ! Give in this time & Silent Rain..........WOW !!!

From: Metalmusicman Date: December 11, 2006 at 12:05
Ten return with just a monster piece of musical brilliance!!! Most notably it's the return to the classic Ten sound that sucks you in, but more than that it's the fact that the song writing is up to snuff with that of their first two near perfect releases. Throw in the fact that it is a concept album executed perfectly and how can you go wrong? Yes, there is the usual issues of sound quality, but when your stereo is on 10, what does it matter anyway...?

From: juan carlos Date: February 18, 2007 at 16:06
Gran disco. 8.8/10

From: Carlos A. Date: February 19, 2007 at 13:13
Buen disco aunque irregular 8/10

Another fine release by Ten...whatever these guys put out is either good or close to it ..here's a conceptual album...best tracks are "The Stranger","Give In This Time"(nice AOR one),"Love Became The Law"(also nice),"Silent Rain"(beautiful solid ballad),"Black Hearted Woman" & "Valentine"...get it!.93/100

From: hair metal again Date: March 1, 2013 at 7:41
ok release by TEN ,with kinda heavy sound and a not so good production with Gary s vocs separate from the rest!overall enjoyable though and worth picking it up just for "give in this time" which is an awesome song!
