--------------------------- The B.E.S.T. AOR disc ever. ---------------------------

From: Andy Date: April 23, 2001 at 8:30
This is it - One of the all-time classic AOR albums. A must get album that will have you singing those superb harmonies and huming the brilliant keyboard riffs, time and time again

From: Kim Date: October 20, 2001 at 1:55
This cd is sooooo underrated.

From: lee craddock Date: February 11, 2002 at 15:23
IM A DRUMMER IN A ROCK BAND CALLED TRICKY DICKY,WE SUPPORTED DARE ON ONE OF THEIR TOURS AT LIMELIGHT CLUB AT CREWE.THEY WERE AMAZING,DARRENS VOICE WAS JUST FANTASTIC.

From: Mike Date: March 30, 2002 at 14:55
The best i heard so far. And maybe in the future...

From: Roxas Date: April 6, 2002 at 2:43
I've had this for ages and it's still magic. Utterly fantastic melodic rock 10/10.

From: jaybee8060 Date: May 17, 2002 at 22:51
Truly a classic AOR gem! It rocks yet is soooo listenable that the melodies from every song stay with you! Can't say enough about songs like 'Into The Fire' and 'Runaway', both personal faves and essential AOR classics. Both 'Nothing Is Stronger Than Love' and 'Return The Heart' are prime examples of Darren Wharton's smooth and emotional vocal delivery. All ten tracks are worthy of any AOR/melodic rock fan's collection. Why albums like this rarely got any airplay is beyond me...

From: Steve T Date: July 8, 2002 at 11:06
Great album. Vinnie Burns has to heard to be believed. King Of Spades and Don't Let Go take it to another level.

From: xavieskay Date: October 5, 2002 at 16:25
it's a good album but i think this is not the best aor album! the voice is too far. si este es el mejor disco de aor...

From: rob garcia Date: January 17, 2003 at 15:00
no doubt that this is a milestone in british aor!!!.buy at any price your collection cannot be completed without this!.

From: manos Date: January 26, 2003 at 0:13
That band is a blend of Def Leppard, Marillion and Asia, yet presenting a unique, sencere outcome. Magic melodies, charming harmony vocals, nostalgic atmosphere, either bright or dark, this album is full of colours...Fantastic

From: e5150 Date: February 10, 2003 at 7:37
Unbelievable debut album! Beautiful and perfect melodies If you can't buy it then steal it!!

From: VEGASAUCTIONS Date: March 21, 2003 at 9:26
BOTTOM LINE- This is the PERFECT AOR release. Every song is a melodic rock masterpiece. IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS. 10 out of 10 HANDS DOWN.

From: Andy Date: April 11, 2003 at 23:34
I heard this album at its release date and thought a lot of it. Fantastic tunes with catchy choruses! Great driving music. A great album put together by great musicians, in particular James Ross on drums, WOW! I have seen James (Jim) live in another band and he rocks! This album was probably my first proper ROCK album i bought, so i thank Dare and especialy Jim for showing me the correct path to take. Its a pity that the following albums wernt as good, but they never are are they? Rock on!

From: Ron from't Dale Date: April 12, 2003 at 15:05
This album is FANTASTIC!!! I used to do my paper round to this bad boy and it totally ROCKED!!! A special thanks to the tub thumping of Jim Ross, may your rhythms go down in rock history dude B-)

From: freddy de keyze Date: April 19, 2003 at 19:54
I don't agree with a lot of the above critics. This is a good CD, but the best AOR CD ever ? What a joke !!! Only 'Abandon' is real class, the rest is just above average and not varied enough ! It's also on the safe side. Signal, I-Ten, Agent, Streets, Dakota, The VU, Bad English, Boulevard, Shadow King, Preview, Fortune (pre-Harlan Cage), Van Stephenson, the debut of Foreigner, Intruder, Captive Heart, Mecca, Strangeways, Harlan Cage and lots of others (too many to mention) are all better AOR !

From: freddy de keyze Date: April 20, 2003 at 8:38
Not convinced yet ? What about these AOR pearls : Diving For Pearls, Drive She Said, Fake ID, 101South, Franke And The Knockouts, first Van Zant, Bystander, Alpha, Arrows, Prototype, Idle Cure, second Balance, some Survivor masterpieces, Stan Meissner, Mark Free, Arcangel/Cannata, Beaucoup, Worrall, some Honeymoon Suite records, Harlequin, The Storm, second Eyes, Red Dawn etc. etc. etc. All better than Dare, so you can imagine there is so much more out that's class ! Open your ears and eyes !!!!!

From: Decibel Dave Date: April 23, 2003 at 21:20
To each their own, Freddy. I haven't heard all of those, but of the ones I have heard, I like NONE of them better than this album, with the possible exception of some of the better Survivor albums (Too Hot To Sleep, Caught in The Game, Vital Signs). This is in rarefied air - the only albums I like better are most Def Leppard albums.

From: The Axe Machine Date: April 27, 2003 at 18:14
Definately a classic in the 'Pure AOR' Genre. The best album that DARE have done, although it is also definately worth checking out the 'Blood From Stone' album. If you haven't got this album, then stop reading these comments, go and buy it!!!

From: Nae Neck Date: May 16, 2003 at 20:33
Bought this album way back when it was realeased in 88, and quite simply was caught hook, line, sinker and grubby worm, just could not get enough of this, its got everything that AOR has to offer and if you like great guitar solos then look no further than Don't Let Go this will make you sit up and have you by the balls if you have them, girls you are exempt from the balls part, if you do not have this in your collection go and get it you will not be sorry in fact you will be glad you did.

From: Teo_3 Date: June 6, 2003 at 20:40
Fot his release i agree with most of the people above me,one the best AOR albums i've heard.Every time i listen to it i 'travel' with it.Every song is a hit with 'King Of Spades' my personal favorite.Yeap,it is up there with the best.

From: brent Date: June 23, 2003 at 9:48
How can this have an average rating of 7?? ) Blasphemy!! A classic.

From: Gaz Date: December 22, 2003 at 16:11
One of the best AOR discs in the history of the genre! Keyboard laden rock with unbelievable solo offerings from Vinny Burns on the guitars. Songs like ABANDON and INTO THE FIRE are absolute class.

From: rockhard Date: January 9, 2004 at 13:03
Seriously, this is not a good album! It is not a 'classic' or 'best ever' and it definitely doesn't 'rock'. Did I get the different version than the rest of you? I am a huge 80s fan of everything catchy and everything rock. This album is NOT catchy and the songs on it are NOT good. Listened to it 3 times hoping it would grow on me but instead I just wasted my time. Nothing stands out where I'd ever want to hear it again. I felt bad selling this to someone else.

From: kskkerim Date: January 31, 2004 at 4:54
I WAS VERY EXITED WHEN I HEAR THE SOUND OF THE GUITARS .IT IS AWOSOME

From: Kez Date: March 28, 2004 at 15:39
Excellent album! Had the pleasure of seeing these guys play live back in 1990 & hung out with them backstage too! Vinnie & Brian were a wicked laugh!! Music was so cool, havent heard any of there later stuff but there certainly rocked back in 90

From: Melodiker Date: April 4, 2004 at 11:04
ONE WORD : MASTERPIECE !!!

From: Mikman Date: April 13, 2004 at 17:31
Absolutely unbelievable release. Definitely one of my all time favourites along with the first couple Harem Scarems.

From: Matt Date: May 5, 2004 at 1:24
I bought this cd in the first part of 1989 after hearing 'Abandon'. It was definitely one one of my favorite cds. A month or so after I got the cd, I saw them in concert. Dare was the opening act for Europe. It was one of those concerts that the opening band was just as good if not better than the headliner. It was general admission so we got all the way to the front row. The bass player handed one of my buddies his pick (who gave it to me because I played bass). Still one of my favorites

From: bateman Date: May 27, 2004 at 7:58
This one is really good - you have all the brilliant songwriting and great ideas throughout the whole (keyboard driven) record. It probably works best put into your car cd player, when you're out with your girlfriend (lots of ballads...) the only drawback is the poor production. sadly the voice got almost lost in the mix. if you don't care about that and you're into melodic rock, it's worth any price. 8.5/10

From: TIM (2) Date: May 27, 2004 at 8:33
This is a monster, so many killer tracks. None of the bands mentioned by Freddy above have released a single album that compares to this, they are just copycats. This was an original and flawless masterpiece of the genre, and whereas the bands Freddy lists are mostly great (Except: Shadowking and The VU) they didn't produce anything like this that you can pick up 16 years after it's release and it sounds as fresh as day 1. THE best.

From: Date: May 28, 2004 at 11:36
An AOR-Masterpiece !!!

From: KIP Date: August 17, 2004 at 5:07
What a great opening!!!!! A strong record and a great AOR tune! Classy!

From: Geoff Date: September 5, 2004 at 2:45
Abandon' is an all-time AOR classic, well at least to these ears and 'Runaway' is a gem too. There are quite a few winners on this CD to be honest. Great melodic rock CD!

From: Kryiis Karl Date: November 6, 2004 at 4:27
I really love this Cd but I still keep believing it should have been a little more 'punchy' with more guitars and just a little upper tempo. And less keyboards, used with more parcimony they would be more effiscient. Don't listen to this one when you are very tired but want to stay awake....

From: ton jansen Date: November 18, 2004 at 12:48
About several albums of Dare I wrote soms words of great music. About the very best of Darren and the boys I never say something. What a shame! This is the best AOR ever.

From: Gazza Styx Date: December 2, 2004 at 15:31
One of the best AOR albums ever!!!! A true classic. Still sounds great today. A must for everybody in the world!!!!!

From: ArnoldLancelot Date: February 3, 2005 at 0:21
I have to agree with most of the comments up here, this is AOR by numbers and the year of releasing was one of the good ones. Although freddy de Keyze name a lot of names up there apparently better, but I think they are all great and this one TOO!! By the way I do not consider Harlan Cage 96, or Captive Heart better than this one. Hardly just near it. This is the best Dare release and I think essential in any aor collection.

From: Swriter Date: February 5, 2005 at 22:55
got this one a while back and for some reason I thought it was the new one(Shining Water) and it blew me away. I then realized it was the first one from 88 and was even more blown away. This one sounds like it was recorded this year, way ahead of it's time. ONLY DOWNFALL IS THERE ARE ONLY 10 SONGS!!! Beautiful stuff, a must have and the best Dare I have heard.

From: swriter Date: July 21, 2005 at 12:35
ok, I give up, I got about 4 cds of this band and although good, I do not find myself going back over again, just can't get with the program on this band, I will keep trying!!!

From: PAUL Date: August 27, 2005 at 12:27
SORRY GUYS,I'M WITH AOR FREAKY AGAIN.OF COURSE A VERY GOOD RELEASE,BUT THE BEST AOR ALBUM EVER?VERY FUNNY!TAKE SOME BANDS FROM ENGLAND:AIRRACE,HEARTLAND(FIRST),TOBRUK(WILD ON THE RUN),ANDY TAYLOR(THUNDER),PHENOMENA(DREAM RUNNER),MAGNUM(ON A STORRYTELLER'S NIGHT & WINGS OF HEAVEN),RAINBOW(WITH J.L.TURNER) AND OF COURSE THE MAN WHO MADE RAINBOW FAMOUS:RUSS BALLARD,ONE OF THE BEST SONGWRITERS OF THIS GENRE,OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!

From: Nick C Date: August 27, 2005 at 19:43
This is very close to being the best AOR album from the U.K. (for me Rio Borderland just beats it). I assume the comment above is in jest ..Andy Taylor - Thunder?? 1st two songs great the rest filler?? Tobruk (much as I like 'em a watered down release). Abandon is a totally fantastic song and a mega AOR anthem, it's the best song on the album but the others are a close call. Mr Wharton has a great smouldering husky voice suited to the bands sound. Grab this!!

From: TIM (2) Date: August 28, 2005 at 15:20
Whoever it is above that thinks that Andy Taylor's 'Thunder' album comes within a million miles of this masterpiece is just being disrespectful. Only the first 2 FM albums come close to this as best Brit AOR album.

Heavy Harmonies Volunteer
From: Jez Date: August 28, 2005 at 15:55
Spot on comments from TIM & Nick regarding this one. A Brit classic in every sense of the word, and an album they have never come close to beating since - near perfection. I would also add Strangeways to the list of the best of British with their brilliant 'Native Sons' & 'Walk In The Fire' releases.

From: PAUL Date: August 29, 2005 at 14:18
You are right dear Jez.I didn't add Strangeways because they're from Scotland.'Dance with somebody','Empty streets','Stand up and shoot','Where are they now','Love lies dying','Living in the danger zone' from the albums you named are much better than anything Dare made. Also the first 2 FM albums beat Dare, TIM(2).Sorry guys,if this is the best british AOR release then England hasn't good bands and artists to play this genre. What do you think about GARY HUGHES,RUSS BALLARD,JOHN WAITE,THE BABYS.

From: PAUL Date: August 29, 2005 at 14:22
AIRRACE,LIONHEART,BAD CO,ASIA,MAGNUM,PHENOMENA,RAINBOW....

From: TIM (2) Date: August 30, 2005 at 7:24
Dear PAUL, Scotland is actually in Britain - might want to check an atlas on that one. But Strangeways should definitely be in the same breath as DARE & FM. Stuff like Gary Hughes & Rainbow (W.T.F?) certainly should not. Anyway, you & Freaky are well & truly in the minority on this album (check the comments above)...

From: PAUL Date: August 30, 2005 at 10:44
Hello TIM(2).I know where Scotland is,my friend. Thanks a lot for your advice, but don't care about my geographic knoeledge...Lets talk about msic.Tastes differ, that's all TIM(2)!AOR freaky mentioned some great bands(put FORTUNE first my friend),i added some others(from England in Great Britain).I think that ALL these bands are MUCH BETTER than Dare and this isn't a classic album, sorry. Many people here love 'out of the silence' and don't like 'fortune',very strange...

From: PAUL Date: August 30, 2005 at 10:55
I respect everyone's taste and opinion, but don't like this album.'abandon' is ok,'into the fire' is great,'the raindance' their best, but the rest??????? Nothing special for me.I can't say that's bad, just not the best aor album ever.7.5/10 for this one, sorry.

From: PAUL Date: August 30, 2005 at 11:03
TIM(2),what do you mean W.T.F. about RAINBOW?

From: TIM (2) Date: August 30, 2005 at 11:20
Well this album is smooth, atmospheric AOR. If you're going to mention Rainbow you may as well mention Def Leppard, as neither are AOR. You can certainly add me to the list of people that LOVE this album but don't like FORTUNE...

Heavy Harmonies Volunteer
From: Jez Date: August 30, 2005 at 11:35
The Fortune album is good for sure, but this blows it away in terms of songwriting and the general atmosphere of the whole album. It isn't formulaic like the Fortune/Harlan Cage/101 South material, which whilst enjoyable, can be extremely samey in places, an accusation that cannot be said of this. Tastes differ of course and whatever floats your boat, but this is definately a benchmark album as it has the certain 'X'factor that many of it's counterparts severly lack.

From: PAUL Date: September 7, 2005 at 16:26
Jez.i'll never agree with you,my friend. There're tons of better albums than this one out there. You KNOW it,i'm sure.'the raindance' is a perfect song, but can't beat 'thrill of it all' or 'dearborn station'.TIM(2)you're right,DEF LEPPARD is most close to AOR than RAINBOW,but if you check them with G.BONNET and J.L.TURNER you'll find some brilliant AOR/HARD ROCK songs (since you been gone,i surrender both from RUSS BALLARD,stone cold, can't let you go,desperate dreams, street of dreams...)

From: PAUL Date: September 7, 2005 at 16:37
OOOPPPSSS!!!!!!Sorry guys.i did an error.i meant 'desperate heart' not 'deaperate dreams',which is a perfect song from a perfect album(SURVIVOR-TOO HOT TO SLEEP).

From: AOR freaky Date: September 8, 2005 at 12:06
Hi Paul, how can you argue with Jez, mate ? The good man ain't an AOR at all. The fact he believes this is way better than the FORTUNE CLASSIC speaks for itself ! This is a good album, but far from a classic one. Nor the songs, nor the musianship, nor the sound comes even close to the FORTUNE MASTERPIECE ! People telling it otherwise, don't know a damn thing about great AOR or pomp. This is Dare's best moment, but there is only one great song on it : Abandon. The rest is too safe and boring.

From: Nick C Date: September 8, 2005 at 15:03
Freakster...How can you say that this is too safe and mention the Fortune album in the same breath??? The Fortune album although pretty good is the epitome of safe! And don't give me 'all the critics say it's the greatest' nonsense it's time you stopped being a sheep and listened to the music instead of relying on a critic to say it's good. Make your own mind up don't have it made up for you. There are many albums I love that got a critical panning so who's wrong me for liking them?Gimme a break!

Heavy Harmonies Volunteer
From: Jez Date: September 8, 2005 at 15:12
Get off your soap box perleeease, and stop going on about Fortune at every given moment. You have made you point excessively. Most of us agree it's good (myself included shock horror!!!), but it certainly isn't groundbreaking in any sense of the word. Get over it - not all of us rate it as highly as you do. Doesn't mean we don't like AOR either before you start accusing people/me of being 'Non belivers???????or whatever crap you come out with.

From: PAUL Date: September 8, 2005 at 15:47
Sorry Jez,i'll do it one more time.Nick C:Me and AOR freaky didn't mention FORTUNE in the same breath. We didn't cause this album really isn't.Also we didn't say that's bad, simply not the greatest British AOR and of course not the best ever(see bands we mentioned). The big differce between 'out of the silence' and 'fortune' is that there are tons of better bands than DARE and the other is comparable only with 8-10 albums.Nuff said!

From: Nick C Date: September 8, 2005 at 16:00
PAUL the comment wasn't directed at you it was for Freaky mainly for the comment dated 08 Sept 05 plus in the comments above you indeed both compare this release to the Fortune yourself 30 Aug 05.

From: AOR freaky Date: September 9, 2005 at 4:45
Nick C . . . ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Man, if one person gives his PERSONAL opinion on this site, it's me, mate ! Gimme me a break man ! Why are a lot of guys attacking me constantly, I ask you ! ? Just because I'm NOT a sheep and I don't follow the flock, like you and a lot of others here (you know who !) ! Best, mate and think before you write !

We're attacking you now!!!When you constantly go around posting crap on this site just because I/others like a few newer/more modern things besides AOR. You accuse us/me of not knowing what we're talking about just because we think the Dare album is better than Fortune!!!!You may get a shock Pal, as people here know as much if not more than your goodself and well you know it!!!!

From: AOR freaky Date: September 9, 2005 at 10:21
Jez : it's the truth ! Not many on this side know more about AOR, melodic (hard)rock and pomp then me, the mighty AOR freaky ! I only admit that Koogles is the KING, but then I'm the PRINCE ! And I have also a lot of respect for PAUL (fantastic taste !), swriter, scandinavia, rob and some others. Cheers guys !!! Hey, sometimes I even agree with you, mate (see Coney Hatch), but strange enough you and your mates seem to forget that every time ! Really strange ! So negative !

From: TIM (2) Date: September 9, 2005 at 10:29
AOR Freaky, any true fan of AOR would LOVE this album more than average albums like Harlan Cage or Fortune. This is true PURE AOR & only fans of this music like me, Jez, Nick C, Wotty can appreciate this. Everyone else is an IMPOSTER & not a fan of true AOR. Stick to your hardrock & Pomp Freaky & PAUL & leave us REAL AOR fans to our music! Best.

From: AOR freaky Date: September 9, 2005 at 10:40
Very pleasant, TIM (2) ! I'm pleased you admit that only people like me, PAUL, swriter, Rob and the mighty Koogles know their stuff. There is always a difference between professionals and amateurs. We are the professionals, you and your friends are amateurs (and I know Wotty good enough to write this, he even won't deny it !). By the way : I never said this was a bad record, you know ! It even gets 7,5 out of 10 from me, but it's no competition for the REAL STUFF (see acts you name !). Best

Freaky - Shouldn't that be Ponce not Prince. Anyway Your knowledge is indeed great oh Mighty one and We all bow to you. If you think that you know it all then fair enough - that just sums you up really!!!I think most people on this board and on the others aswell know the score. I Wish you'd honour us with your presence on the message board where all this should be anyways and enlighten us all with you knowledge!!!Can't understand why you never come over!!!!!Best

From: Erik Date: September 9, 2005 at 15:01
Freaky. The fact your calling yourself a professional says it all. That is an unbelievably pathetic statement. The only professionals here are the founders of this great site and all the musicians of the bands we love to talk about. Your going of the deep end my friend. Sad. I wont waiste any more lines on you tho. Just not worth it with your same old insulting comments.

From: AOR freaky Date: September 10, 2005 at 4:57
Erik : I know it's hard, but that's life ! THE TRUTH ALWAYS HURTS !! HA ! HA ! And your reaction is so pathetic and . . ., indeed . . . amateurish ! Jez : I think you're beginning to understand how this game has to be played ! Best ! By the way : this record is still not top. Heartland, Magnum etc., all british, are head and shoulders above the stuff Dare released so far !

From: Rycheage Date: September 11, 2005 at 14:33
This is exquisite AOR. As good as it gets. It has everything a real AOR fan could want. Crunching guitars, flowing keys and one of the best voices in rock there is. If you don't have this, your collection is incomplete. It is not the best AOR album nor is it perfect, but is does come damn close.

From: Geoff Date: September 13, 2005 at 22:25
AOR Freaky, no offence mate but you wouldn't know what decent melodic hard rock was if it came and chewed your ass off. You are so single-minded and stuck on your small group of essential bands that you're blind to the majority of good music out there. You may know a little about AOR and pomp, but if I ever wanted to know anything about either of them you'd be the LAST person I'd ask for advice. I personally think you know very little about music outside of your tiny circle, especially hard rock

From: AOR freaky Date: September 14, 2005 at 7:15
Boy, you're so wrong mate ! I blow you away anytime, any day if it comes to musical knowlegde, my friend. Not only AOR, pomp or melodic rock, my friend, but also pure hardrock, metal, symphonic/progressive rock/metal, powerrock/metal etc. Even trash, mate ! Only about death, black, modern/alternative, punk, industrial, gothic and other crap I want say I know a lot, but probably even more than a lot over here. But it's not what I like. But for the rest ? Nearly 40 years of knowledge ! Best !

From: AOR freaky Date: September 14, 2005 at 7:21
Sorry : about these genres I'm not an expert at all. By the way : you forgot that I respect a lot of others here, cause they know a lot ! (Koogles, swriter, PAUL, Scandinavia, Rob etc.) You are NOT one of them mate ! So narrow-minded ! Sorry ! You only love alternative stuff, Geoff. So I'll never WOULD give you any advice at all, my friend ! It would be a waste of time !

From: Wotty Date: September 14, 2005 at 7:50
Well I've seen some arrogant posts before but Freakys has achieved Gold Medal status.Good grief man, when you only cite a handful of bands on this site that you actually like and give no information on them at all it seems you would get a good stuffing in the knowledge stakes. Before you turn on me,I've stated numerous times that people know more than me and I'm not afraid to admit it.But the arrogance you've shown indicates embarrassment on your part is not too far away.

From: Nick C Date: September 14, 2005 at 8:24
Wotty mate it's not what you know-anyone can regurgitate facts about anything and everything,it's wether you appreciate what you are listening to and enjoy it that matters.Sure we could all build up huge collections but then half of it would sit there gathering dust, hence my little stash gets pruned down quite mercilessly every so often.I've always found you objective and appreciative in your opinion (Glossalalia ) and that's what counts.Freak is just playing who can piss highest up the wall!

Freak - Many people here have alot of knowledge besides yourself (as I have said many times before) & you are now just showing yourself to be the arrogant individual (for want of a better word) that we all know you are. Why not come over to the message boards (where we should all be discussing this anyway) and share all of this superior knowledge with us. Before you say 'If Time Permits' you seem to spend quite a bit of time posting here, so why not pay a visit! I can't wait myself!!!

From: Geoff Date: September 14, 2005 at 19:41
Freaky, I only love alternative stuff, do I? Well slap my balls and tickle my vagina (whoops I wasn't meant to tell people I had both!) but I sure have wasted a lot of time commenting on about 2000+ melodic rock / AOR and glam CDs on this site then, haven't I. Every word about my love for Treat and German melodic hard rock bands, along with almost every US melodic rock band from 1984-1995... they were just lies. You caught me red handed Freaky. Sure wasted a lot of time and money on my CDs too

From: fiortoft Date: March 18, 2006 at 11:13
Can anyone have a differente opinion from AOR freaky???....he's MR KNOW-IT-ALL on this site...much too arrogant for my taste!!!...anyway this record is good but not the best ever, that's my personal opinion and the same of AOR freaky fortunately...I'm lucky this time!!!

From: swriter Date: April 3, 2006 at 22:21
I have lived with this one for a year or so, as well as four other Dare cds. This one has really grown on me to the point of it may now take place in my top 20 list for aor, this is fantastic, not sure why this had to grow on me, but man oh man, amazing!!!

From: kipvanpearcy Date: August 17, 2006 at 5:44
Have to agree with AOrFreaky here, the only awesome track is 'Abandon', and this track alone makes it worth the buy, but the rest is just good AOR, nothing else.

From: Lennie Date: August 17, 2006 at 8:47
Im afraid I disagree with you entirely! 'Heartbreaker' pisses on 'Abandon' and is easily the best track Dare have ever recorded. In fact tracks 2, 3 & 4 are all better than Abandon as well! Overall a great AOR album - certainly one of the best British AOR releases and in my top 20 all time of the genre. I have to say that I laughed my arse off reading this thread - great stuff! Makes visiting this site worthwhile!

From: metalhead4life Date: September 24, 2006 at 1:23
Pretty good CD; 7/10. My favorite tracks are 3, 7, and 8. All other songs are pretty good also. I have this one and Blood From Stone; I think I actually like this one better than Blood From Stone. Haven't put both in for a while though.

From: aorteto Date: October 25, 2006 at 18:59
One of my all time favourites, together with ICON-NIGHT OF THE CRIME, DANDER DANGER-S/T, TEN-THE NAME OF THE ROSE, CITA-HEAT OF EMOTION, SURVIVOR-VITAL SIGNS, BONFIRE-FIREWORKS and many others. DON'T LET GO and UNDER THE SUN are perfect and beautiful AOR songs,IMO. I have also a mini CD with the song NO STRINGS ATTACHED ( witch is amazing ) and OUT OF THE SILENCE-SESSIONS like IF LOOKS COULD KILL, LOVE IS THE PRICE, THE LAST TIME, PRECIOUS, VALENTINO, etc. I'm a very lucky man.CLASSIC !!!!!!

From: coverdale14 Date: December 15, 2006 at 12:54
ONE OF MY 5 TOP AOR ALBUMS. WHAT A VOICE OF MR. WHARTON, VINNY BURNS ALWAYS BE VINNY BURNS, ABANDON THAT'S A ANTHEM OF AOR, NOTHING IS STRONGER THAN LOVE KILLS. 11/11. PERFECT AOR.

From: rick kerch vzla Date: January 7, 2007 at 15:00
All the comments so far are all the same and i must agree with them, this album is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!.All the songs are well structured with the details just as good as drinking an early morning coffee.I had the chance to see these guys live TWICE during the support of the album(The first time was with Gary Moore and the second time with Europe)and they rocked the crowd off!!!.Dare deserved an OSCAR at that time as simple as that.

From: sanxdowntherainbow Date: January 24, 2007 at 18:36
THIS IS NOT the best AOR album of all time!, there's a lot of better bands! I mean I really like this album, It is great, in the line of FM, but FM is 10000 better!, just the 2 first songs are really cool, but still a great album. Very hard to find, and the price is ridiculous (I'm very lucky, since i found this one at AMOEBA music store in Hollywood, CA for just 5 bucks!). Forget paying more than 50 bucks on this...there are better cd's at more affordable prices! 8/10

From: sanxdowntherainbow Date: February 20, 2007 at 20:17
o.k after listening to this cd a couple of times again, I discovered that not only the 2 first tracks are cool, actually the whole album kicks ass. So I give it a 9.5/10 Cheers!

From: AORster Date: July 7, 2007 at 11:47
One of the strongest debuts ever, Celtic AOR, brilliant! Sad it didn't last thou.

From: hardrock90.00 Date: July 10, 2007 at 17:51
Classic album! The first 4 songs was enough to buy this one. Great keys, great performance of all musicians. This one deserves a 10/10 for sure! Highly recommended!

From: Figge Date: July 27, 2007 at 20:00
You these albums that's just perfect in every way, for you personally? This is one of 'em for me. There's just something about the mood, atmosphere and feeling of the whole album that gets me everytime. Awesome songs, great production and the very characteristic voice of Mr, Wharton. Definitely in my top 5 AOR albums of all time. Not even Dare themselves has come close to the magic of this debut since. And now I understand more than ever why Freddy/Freaky got kicked out of this site. :-)

From: Rycheage Date: July 27, 2007 at 20:54
This is near-perfect AOR. No, Dare has not come close to this since. If you can get your hands on this, make sure you make it part of your collection ASAP. It's that good.

From: Opcart Date: July 30, 2007 at 20:35
Best album ever... 100/100

From: Olfert Date: August 3, 2007 at 2:26
kikoborrico it's okay that you rate this CD 10/100, but could you explain why?

From: lost-soul Date: August 19, 2007 at 8:23
Darren Wharton is a great vocalist and an even greater songwriter and when he joined forces with Vinny Burs the only thing that could come out is an outsanding AOR album....Out of all Dare's excellent cd's this one's clearly the best. 97/100

From: Nightrain Date: October 21, 2007 at 13:21
I raise two thumbs up for DARE's creativity in making such a great debut album. With powerful compositions, DARE came up with an astonishing set of strong tracks, without any fillers at all. 'Abandon' and 'Runaway' are an example of a wonderful melodic rocks, while the beauty of 'Nothing Is Stronger Than Love' as well as 'King of Spades' adds more value to this album. For all AOR lovers, you should buy this at all cost!

From: coverdale14 Date: November 14, 2007 at 13:26
ONE OF THE TOP 1O AOR ALBUMS:#1 HEARTLAND 'HEARTLAND', #2HEARTLAND 'WIDE OPEN',#3 DRIVE SHE SAID 'DRIVE SHE SAID',#4 DARE 'OUT OF SILENCE',#5 MARK FREE 'LONG WAY FROM LOVE', #6SIGNAL 'LOUD AND CLEAR',#7 STRANGEWAYS 'NATIVE SONS',#8TOUCH 'THE COMPLETE WORKS',#9SNAKE CHARMER 'SMOKE AND MIRRORS',#10 URGENT 'CAST THE FIRST STONE'.

From: KurtmanJP Date: July 17, 2008 at 1:19
"Into The Fire" "Nothing Is Stronger Than Love" and "Runaway" are just so killer! Pure AOR!

From: newscandi Date: July 25, 2008 at 17:42
A dreamy album at it's best. I oftten compare it myself to SPOONS "Vertigo tango" as it has the same atmosphere. Wonderful melodies in both. Both are good for relaxing and dreaming and thinking of a world full of harmony. The music is full of keys and has a "warm" deep drum sound allover with the voice melting in. Very recommended

From: newscandi Date: July 25, 2008 at 17:45
I mean either "highly recommended" or "very recommendable"

From: newscandi Date: July 25, 2008 at 17:46
But isn't "very recommended" also right? Sorry, for wasting this space and losing my grace

From: darobinson Date: July 25, 2008 at 17:55
I have to agree with Freddy above. All of the bands he mentions are better than this.I wish they had some more punch to their music. Vinny is a great guitar player and Wharton is a great singer but this is no where near my top 10. Folks will hate me for this. Oh well....

From: Rafo Phoenix Date: July 26, 2008 at 9:10
The Perfect album, what happen with kikoborrico 10/100 or 100/100?

From: DanDare Date: August 26, 2008 at 18:34
There has been a lot of words used to describe this album - masterpiece, genius, polished, recommended, go out and buy it if you haven't already you moron - that sort of thing. Usually by me. It is everything you could want from an AOR album. Darren Wharton is a God and should be idolised. If youever see him walking down the street throw petals at his feet and then offer to bear his children. This is the last of my top five AOR albums you must own. 100/100.

From: Zoner Date: September 26, 2008 at 18:42
One of the best! Buy it as fast you can! Raindance, Abandon, Nothing is stronger than love, Heartbreaker, Runaway and Under The Sun are ultimate gems on this beautiful AOR disc. Dare I say poodle rock? This is my cup of tea, though.

Picked this one up for .99 in a used music store a few years ago. One of the best bargins I've ever found. My collection is a pretty good size one, but it seems that I am always coming back to releases like this. A must have for any fan of quality melodic rock!

From: DonDefo Date: November 6, 2010 at 10:47
One of my first pure AOR albums. This one I think enabled me to get into this beautiful music branch called as AOR. Out of Silence is not comparable to anything, it's simply magic. Every single song here. Darren Wharton is a big guy!

From: Pee Dee Date: January 10, 2011 at 4:33
I don't know what to say about this one that hasn't already been said. It's absolutely fantastic. If you don't think so, you are not someone who enjoys AOR, it's that simple. This sets the standsrd by which all other AOR acts should be judged. 9.9/10

From: edwithmj Date: March 19, 2011 at 19:55
Abandon, The Raindance, King of Spades and Nothing Is Stronger Than Love are all top quality melodic rock tracks. A must have indeed.

Superb album. Top ten of all of the times of AOR music. This album is pure AOR. Great atmosphere in the songs thanks to magic keyboards and melodies. All tracks are awesome but muy favorities are "Abandon" with incredible introducction, "Into the fire" and the nice ballad "Nothing stranger than the love". The best album of AOR from UK together with "Tough it out" of FM. 10/10

superb debut for DARE back in 88 with a perfect sound & production!Darren s vocals are sensational ,Vinnie s solos outstanding and the keys just great! Many great songs here like"abandon","into the fire ",nothing is stronger than love" and "heartbreaker" !smooth all the way

From: titothetitan Date: January 30, 2018 at 10:40
I agree that this might be the best AOR album ever released. Every song is so unique and magical. Darren has a wonderful voice. The follow-up album (Blood From Stone), however, is very average.

From: MaximusTundra Date: February 10, 2018 at 18:12
I've always loved this album by Dare, and I'd have to say it's my favorite one too by them! Blood From Stone is also something to take a look at also as well. I absolutely love the opening to the song "Into The Fire" Such an epic track! Tracks I like from this album include "Into The Fire" "Abandon" "Heartbreaker" "Runaway" "King Of Spades" And "Don't Let Go" The whole album is fantastic! so give this album a listen! 😎

From: rundi Date: January 13, 2023 at 14:55
