Heavy Harmonies Review
From: Dan Date: March 18, 2003 at 1:28
Being a big fan of James Salters' work on the CCM classic Battle Cries by The Brave (a stellar example of the production work done by the Elefante brothers at Pakaderm), I was quite eager to hear this disc. In short, it does not disappoint. It's a few years down the road, but Mr. Salters still knows how to sing with the best of 'em. Gone are the layers upon layers of vocal harmonies which were a trademark of the Elefante sound, leaving a rawer feel. Vocal harmonies are still there, just not as pronounced.

Track By Track:

  1. Arms Around the World (3:31). Right out of the gate, we hear a cool keyboard intro into an uptempo guitar groove. The chorus is powerful, and the overall feel of the song is very upbeat.
  2. Make It Simple (3:02). Guitars are more pronounced on this one, but the keyboards are everpresent. Salters' vocals take center stage; I get a very Kansas-esque vibe from this one, with a slightly heavier edge.
  3. Don't Leave Me Now (4:02). This is a wonderful AOR anthem, at times reminiscent of The Storm, and the chorus is epic. One of the best tracks on the album. Very well done!
  4. How Can I? (3:52). A heavier intro leads into almost a westcoast-style verse, but the chorus is vintage Brave. This is textbook '80s hard rock with a powerful chorus.
  5. Love Is an Ocean (5:28). We slow things down a bit with a wonderful piano ballad, with some nice overlaid keyboards. Salters' voice brims with emotion; very powerful! A standout track!
  6. Ordinary People (4:42). Back we go, to one of the more rocking tracks on the album. Nice keyboard/guitar combo at the beginning, and excellent keyboard riffs throughout. The vocal harmonies on the preliminary chorus are a bit "off" though...not sure what effect they were going for here...
  7. On the Water (3:47). A nice "reminiscing" kind of mid-rocker. I like the vocal harmonies throughout on this one.
  8. When the Love Goes Away (3:31). I hear vintage Dennis DeYoung on this one, a story telling of lost love. This one has the potential to do extremely well!
  9. Hold On (4:05). Another ballad, this one is guitar-centric rather than piano-based. Some nice acoustic instrumentation here. The vocals really shine on this one. This is one of the best tracks on the album.
  10. Free (3:46). Towering guitars and keys open this one up. It builds into an absolutely wonderful chorus. This one could do QUITE well as a single!

This is a very strong release, but I think the production is a little too "raw" and in some places a bit muddied. Layering Salters' vocals more would help immensely (yeah, I know, I know, it's been done, but what can I say, I absolutely love the Elefante style of vocal and keyboard production...have I flogged that dead horse enough yet? . Musically this is an extremely solid album, which will get considerable rotation in my CD player, and any fan of '80s hard rock and heavier AOR will enjoy this album immensely! The disc can be purchased via the band's website at www.faithnation.com.

Faith Nation are a Christian rock band that offer a debut album of good songs heavily influenced and sounding like classic 80's hard rock. Vocalist James Salter has a great voice in the range and style of Europe lead vocalist Joey Tempest (in his Europe style vocals). The style ranges from the heavy keyboard pomp of "Arms Around The World" and "Ordinary People" to a more traditional 80's hard rock of "Make It Simple" and "Don't Leave Me Now".

Recomendable a todas luces. 8.5/10

My faith in James Salters' vocal prowess was sustained on this album, but unfortunately, those vocals were the only really good thing; everything else disappointed me like a child who asks for cotton candy but gets a cotton swab instead. Maybe it's not fair to compare, but Salters' original project, The Brave: "Battle Cries, was a monstrous arena-rock masterpiece that took the Christian hard rock world by storm with its massive hooks, gigantic choruses, and huge backing vocals, but the sound of Faith Nation is more rooted in AOR turf with precious little of the power and energy I hoped to hear. Even within the tamer, more restrained confines of the AOR realm, this is relatively ordinary stuff, doing little to distinguish itself from the rest of the AOR pack. Given how great "Battle Cries" was, people had a right to expect Salters' awesome vocals to be paired with something better than average, unspectacular AOR.

Still with the production problem that it seemed the band dragged along from their debut album comes this second release of FN...with more mature songs IMO and less softies than their self titled debut one...the best cuts for me are "Arms Around The World","Love Is An Ocean" & "Free" but also "Make It Simple","How Can I?"(nice softie)& "On The Water" are goodie ones too...CCM Melodic Rock/AOR that will put a in your face...forget the production and enjoy both releases of the band...recommended...88/100

for me the problem is not the production.ok the production is not perfect and could be better but at my taste that s decent.for me the problem is that this real raritie don t hooked me.i m fan of christian rock when the quality is at the "rendez vous" (bloogood ,holy soldier, petra ect ect ...).but here not a bad cd but i feel no emotion when i listen it.i will sell this hyper rare raritie in japan import (2 bonus tracks)on my future auctions on e bay.second part of july (when i will be in vacation).

Excellent album for FAITH NATION mostly based on the superb musicians involved and their obvious abilities!their sound is somewhere between WORLDS APART,STRYPER and the lightest side of DREAM THEATER!this band has a trademark and is not just one more aroundwith plenty of melodic lines and thrilling hooks!really impressed
