This is a well done live album; stacks up to other great live ones (i.e. UFO, Nugent, Queen, Lizzy). Awesome vibe to it. |

When I was a kid, my aunt dated a guy who was one of those "classic-rock guys." When I met him, she said, "He likes hard rock, too." I was like, "Oh yeah, how do you like that new Skid Row, pretty cool, huh?" He didn't know 'em. A cool guy and we talked music a lot,and he did turn me onto some bands, and one of them was Foghat. He lent me Foghat Live on cassette, actually said they weere "ahead of their time." Even then, I thought that was a ridiculous thing to say. They turn in a short, but loud and smokin' live set here, no doubt. It's a great live album from the golden age of great live albums, but not on the level of Alive, Strangers In The Night, double Live Gonzo, or Live And Dangerous. And that comes down to the band themselves. THey were second-tier, no way around it. THey were a good band that did lots of cranked-up blues covers, but in hindsight, they didn't do much that otherbands didn't do bigger and better, and I doubt many people would calll them their "favorite band," no |

... nor many bands who would name Foghat as an influence (although if Michael Hannon from American Dog happens to read this, he'll probably start doing it just to needle me, ha ha). Truth be told, I hear the same thing now that I heard in 1994 when I first put that tape on: an old, '70's-rock band mainly liked by dad- and uncle-types. |

In following Doghouse's good comments, what they lacked was "that" star quality. Certainly not going to compare this to Kiss' Alive, did not have Schenker, not even close to the Nuge and no Lynott, but for a pure '70's live album, it's worth a listen. Some of the tracks are better on this live set, IMO. I hate the studio "I Just Wanna Make Love to You," but here it's much better. "Home in My Hand" is another example. |
