Heavy Harmonies Review

There are comeback albums... and then there are COMEBACK ALBUMS! The last Petra album I remember truly enjoying was Wake Up Call back in 1993, and even that paled when compared to the absolute genius of Unseen Power and Beyond Belief. Petra's mid-late 1990s efforts ranged from mediocre to awful. I truly thought that Petra as I knew it was a thing of the past, especially with Bob Hartman's departure from the band. Enter 2003 and there are rumors of a comeback; moreover there are rumors that Bob Hartman is back in the fold... Hmmm... To quote Blazing Saddles: "It's Twue, it's twue!" Jekyll and Hyde is the heaviest material that Petra has ever released. It rocks HARD. Schlitt is in fine form at the vocal helm; the choruses are strong, but not as harmonic and layered as vintage Petra choruses (not an indictment, just a comparison). The guitarwork is quite crunchy and the bass/drum lines are quite heavy. The album has great replay potential, and it would have to... the only major criticism I have of the CD is that it is FAR too short, clocking in at only 31 minutes. Material this good is deserving of more minutes on the CD! Rating: 88/100

Quite possible the best PETRA CD yet. I got a copy 6 days before it was released. I was so very happy to get my hands on a copy!! It was worth the wait guys, it rocks!! The lyrics are in your face and so is the music! This album is a breath of fresh air. Go out and BUY THE CD!!! You'll love it!

Not a bad track on the CD. "Jeckyll And Hyde" rocks hard, harder than anything they have done in years. The only slow down is the mid-paced pop ballad "Till Everything I Do" which has a very strong sense of melody. "Perfect World"and "Test Of Time" are real hard tracks and offer no apologies. The only gripe here is the lack of time-only 31 minutes. Could've gone longer guys. Great comeback though. 9.0/10.

Sure, you can't compare this one to masterpieces like This Means War or The Rock Cries Out though I have to agree that their comeback is pretty strong. The guys may sound much more modern than on their previous records - although I haven't heard what they've been "committing" after Unseen Power - but they can quite well combine today's music, which I hate from the bottom of my heart, with their own elaborated style. All in all not their best album but certainly a nice one.

Yes this album is hard, melodic, and with awesome vocals...just how I like it. Unfortunately, only one good solo and the CD is only 31 minutes. I hope there is another album after this!

we have here explosive material, some riffs sound almost like thrash...they don't forget how to make good melodies... 31 minutes? it's waaaay too short...anyway i think it's the best US release from 2003!!! Great comeback and i want more....

Monster CD!!!! I wasn't expecting this kind of heavy guitar onslaught from these guys . The production and songwriting is top shelf. The title track is an outstanding piece of heavy, and I mean heavy, melodic rock. "Stand" & "Test of Time" are 2 more awesome slices of Petra-fied melodic rock. I don't know why this CD hasn't been given more attention because it's clearly heads above the rest out there. The only gripe I have is the short(39:00) running time.

I'll have to agree with everyone here, this album is one of my all time favorites, didn't like it the first listen, but I got a chance to listen to it again, and fell in love with it. Great Job, Petra! You guys still got it.

Its not about how hard rockin Petra is! its the message that they have been telling about,I think Petra is THE most Spirtually motivated Christian group out there, I have been a loyal fan of theres for years and will continue to be! its was Gods plan for all things to happen the way they do and Petra is one of Gods plans that was a must to reach certain people that are emotionally and spirittually drained from everyday life who need to hear the word as one crying in the wilderness, I thank God f

This album is a killer. The best PETRA album in years. If you like the 80s petra sound you will love this album too. Any HARD ROCK/METAL fan from the 80s will love this album. BUY OR DIE. And please guys, stop dowloading all the fucking time. You are killing bands like PETRA doing that. They need to sell if they want to keep releasing great albums like this one.

Sorry to disagree Dan, but I didn't really like this at all. I loved the late 80's releases, but this is less melodic than even some of weaker latter releases. I much preferred "Wake Up Call" and "No Doubt" to this, the quality of songwriting was much higher. Granted this is heavier than my tastes anyway, but another in a line of disappointments....

For a guitar player like me, this is guitar heaven!No keys, just drums, bass, vox and GUITAR! Many of the songs are in "Drop D tuning", which gives it a real mean sound.The 1st thing I noticed is that there are NO GUITAR SOLOS on the entire disc!This is my only knock against it(Bob Hartman can play melodic solos with the best of them!)The 1st 2 cuts are the best,I think,but after 3+ listens,I like 'em all! I'm spreading the word to my buds!This is a tot.different style for them-they do it well!

Great album. "Jekyll and Hyde" and "Life As We Know It" are really great tunes. I almost crapped myself when i heard the depthness and thickness of the guitar on "Jekyll and Hyde"! Good job again Schlitt and Hartman!

well, I guess but hope, this is not the last album after the retirement was announced. This is without a doubt, the best Petra in a long time, all solid songs, only downfall is way too short and a lack of lead guitar, great great release!!!!

Great, great cd! Totally surprised me! The album lenght is just right. Just listened Fair Warning“s "Go" (over 75 minutes, 17 tracks and only 2-3 good ones) and this (31 minutes and 10 good/great songs). Who needs long boring albums anyway!!??

Good album! i think, this is the most heaviest album in petra's career..more hard & rocked, solid sounds, good arrangement..a great 'come back' after the great 'beyond belief'..highly recommended for christian rock fans. 88/10..& remember : ' keep rocking for THE ONE who is THE ROCK!!

I can see why people dig this one as it does have a cool hard rocking sound. The first track even sounds pretty cool, but I just can't get into the songs. They're not as awful on this disc as they are on other Petra CDs, but to me they're just not memorable and the choruses/hook are substandard at best. Lyrics still hurt the brain with nonsense like 'It's All About Who You Know' and 'Would'a, Should'a, Could'a' and overall it's going to be on my next trade/sale list.

For their final (to date, anyway) studio effort, Petra finally brought back the rocking sound fans had been crying out for. Easily the heaviest--and one of the best--releases the band ever put out, with the kind of big, crunchy guitars (the riff on "I Will Seek You" just slams!) and thick, throbbing bass that makes you realize you are indeed listening to a hard rock album, and a darn good one at that.
