Great Sounding Base Guitar. I prefer former Petra lead singer;Greg X. Volz Vocals over John Schlitt's anyday. I think hearing Willie Nelson with Strep Throat sounds better than listening to John Schlitt.

Has anyone ever told John Schlitt that he has a frog in his throat?

Hey now, don't go dissing one Christian music's greatest vocalists ever. Just because you don't care for his style doesn't mean he can't sing. John Schlitt has an incredble rock voice with an amazing range. No one with any musical background whatsoever can deny his talent... btw, this is probably Petra's greatest album of all time. The guitar chords rocked, and the lyrics were powerfull and inspiring.

Best Petra CD ever. They change styles with the times & get a lot of flak for doing so, but you can't deny what's going on here. Killer hooks (despite a ripoff of Kiss' "Heaven's on Fire" on "Seen & Not Heard")! Top vocal harmonies put them in the same league as Stryper, Halo, Mastedon. "I Am On The Rock"... I remember roller-skating to that one on Christian Nite in Port Huron, MI. "Armed & Dangerous" & title track are also EXPLOSIVE songs that whip you back in your seat just listening to 'em!

Hey I'm sorry for dissing John Schlitt. But to say his voice has an amazing range, yeh, the same amount as scraping your fingernails across a chalk board. I can't think of a better person who can "Squeal" for Jesus.

What is all this crap about Seen and Not Heard sounding like the Kiss song "Heaven's on Fire"? The chorus RIFFS kind of sound like it a little, and even the ending sounds different, and the verses/bridge sound different. I'm sure it wasn't done on purpose. Anyways, yes, I'd have to say this album rocks hard and I wish this music was still popular today!

An excellent album as are most of Petras. Whether it's Greg X Volz or John Schlitt at the mic, bottom line is it all sounds good. These guys can sing and their lyrics are solid and uncomprimising. That's why they have been around so long.

Am delighted to see Petra on this site. This was probably their finest moment for my money, although far from their heaviest. The title track is the best Petra track of all time, awesome chorus and big harmonies.

Even if you're not into Christian music in general this is a must buy! Any A.O.R.-fan can't be without this one, John Schlitt is amazing throughout the whole record and there's actually not a weak song on this one! Top class, Jesus Christ would have loved this one!

Another blast from the past this one and an absolute stormer of an album. This one is chock full of great songs with more hooks than your average band could dream about. I honestly cannot fault any of the material on this and it is without doubt Petra's finest hour and along with The Brave's 'Battlecries' album, the best CCM Melodic rock album ever released.

Magic. Pure Magic. This is a cracker from start to finish. The rockin' 'Armed and Dangerous', my fave the awesome 'I Am On The Rock', 'Underground', 'Creed', 'Beyond Belief', and yes the track 'Seen and not Heard' seems to borrow from KISS' 'Heaven's On Fire', but so what? Killer tune on a killer album. Let's all praise the Lord for the existence of Petra!

I am not a real Petra Fan, but their more "AOR" oriented series of CDs have great stuff to offer to the listeners. Beyond Belief is a absolute classic with lots of hooks and classics that gave birth to a lot of CCM eternalized hits. probably my favourite Petra CD.

Christian rock is usually lame and the praising quickly get old but if I could recommaned one christian rock CD, this would be the one. The music is excellent, there isn't a filler. Too bad it's CCR.

Another album where I'm stunned by the comments on HH. I thought the songs on here were awful! As others have said, the chorus of 'Seen and Not Heard' is almost identical to 'Heavens On Fire' by Kiss. Not even one of Kiss' better songs, yet probably one of the best choruses on the album. Having said that, for me only 'Armed and Dangerous' and 'Underground' were at all bearable, the other songs are terrible. 'Prayer' is possibly the sappiest song I've ever heard and certainly one of the worst. Hopefully I'll get £2 or £3 for this on eBay. 5/100

Yeah James, I'm probably closer to your thoughts on this than the rest of the reviews. I haven't heard 'Unseen Power' yet, but from what I have heard of Petra this is clearly their best CD, but it's still far from magnificent. It has a cool sound but the actual song quality is mixed at best. A few cool melodic rock tunes scattered throughout the disc, but constantly terrible lyrics do take away from some of the enjoyment. Good for Petra, but compared to the big guns of the genre, or even the big guns of christian hard rock at the time (eg. Holy Soldier, Stryper, The Brave, Bloodgood) it's really quite average.

Petra's moment of perfection, their magnum opus, the pinnacle of their career, and one of the greatest Christian hard rock albums of all time. Once again the band pushed their righteous rock sound into tougher, heavier-edged territory, forcing the keyboard influence to take a backseat to the barrage of beefy power chords. The album title is most appropriate, because everything about it--the production, the hooks, the lyrics, the choruses, the backing vocals--are beyond belief.

This is one of the more consistent Petra releases with the only duff tracks being the two ballads "Love" & " Prayer". The rest of the songs are in the good rather than great category, with "Armed & dangerous" being the pick of the bunch. As a few have mentioned the chorus to "Seen & not heard" is a rip-off of Kiss's "Heaven's on fire" (I'm surprised Gene Simmons lawyers haven't been on the case seeking to top up his pension fund, even though he didn't even write the song. Overall, good but not great.
