This is a very underrated release. Great heavy masterpiece from this Canadian band. Just as good as many of their earlier releases. Does anyone know what Triumph are up to these days.???............Avoid the solo releases from Rik Emmett.

From: koogles Date: April 15, 2003 at 1:34
A shoe in the face of the Triumph legacy. Come on, Great Dane. Only "Somewhere Tonight" shows any glimmer of the great band that was Triumph prior to the disgrace. I put this CD out near the garbage at night to keep the raccoons away. Sad thing is, it works.

From: Gar Date: April 15, 2003 at 7:57
Completely agree with Great Dane on this. Let's face it... Rik Emmett wasn't the only thing TRIUMPH had going for them. Often the songs Gil Moore sang were the best ones(although mainly the Rik Emmett sung songs were released as singles). EDGE OF EXCESS throws out the lightweight la di da type of songs Rik Emmett liked to write(and sing), and ushers in a straightfoward hard rock sound. Most of TRIUMPH's previous albums were hit and miss, but EDGE OF EXCESS is top notch throughout.

From: koogles Date: April 15, 2003 at 12:02
Must I dust off my oft-repeated Phil X story? Guess so. I was at a backyard barbeque and I met up with Phil X. After a cursory handshake and introduction, I brought up "Edge of Excess". You know the first word out of Phil X's mouth? ..... "Sorry!". That pretty much sums up this plodding, cliche-ridden embarrassment.

From: Great Dane Date: April 15, 2003 at 12:44
Well Koogles, I dont aggree. I still listen to this and if Phil X says sorry, well so what.? This cd was released in a time when Grunge was winning ground, and this kind of music wasnt. By the way, I can highly recommend Triumph Live at King Bisquit. Damn good live cd.

From: koogles Date: April 15, 2003 at 15:44
Great Dane- you can't avoid the first Rik Emmett solo release. Have you heard "Saved By Love"? More Triumph than anything on "Edge of Ex-cesspool". Just because the mainstream dropped its standards and embraced grunge, doesn't mean you should drop your standards as well and cuddle up to faintly-inspired releases like this one. It's Triumph in name only, my friend. You're buying a trademark- the packaging of a Triumph album- not the sound.

From: Great Dane Date: April 15, 2003 at 21:11
Koogles. I still dont agree, I just listened to Edge of Excess again, and Its still a cool album. I also just gave Emmets 1st a spin. Its good, not fantastic, but good. My favorite tracks are Drive. Cool intro. I freaked the first time I heard it. Most of the tracks are just too soft for me. Maybe we dissagree here, as I like Triumph for their Rock tracks, Not so much for their melodic tracks. I dont have all their releases, just 7. Eventually IŽll get them all. .................Cont

From: Great Dane Date: April 15, 2003 at 21:27
.Cont .....A classic which I listen to, whenever I want to hear a complete album, withouttoo many fillers are Surveillance. I said I didnt like too much soft stuff, but the track Let The Light is awesome. Headed for Nowhere is one of the best hard rock tracks IŽve ever heard. The guitarplaying is unbelieveable. I also just listened to The Spiral Notebook by Rik Emmett.........What the hell is that about.......

From: koogles Date: April 15, 2003 at 23:16
Well, at least we can agree on the shoddy output of Rik Emmett lately. It's like he's turned into Peter Cetera or something. And yes, "Surveillance" is a great record. Their last great one, in fact!

From: Date: October 10, 2003 at 18:59
koogles...please stop talkin bullshit all the time...evry fuckin time with your stories which nobody gives a fuck about it...please grow up...there's none in here who listen to your comments...

From: koogles Date: October 11, 2003 at 16:03
This is a reply to the jerkoff at (---.pool80181.interbusiness.it). Obviously, YOU are listening to my comments or else you wouldn't have posted, you hypocritical MORON.

From: TIM Date: October 11, 2003 at 20:38
As a matter of fact I do. If you have something to say about someone and not the band- go to the message board. That Note in red means exactly that.

From: Venom Date: October 27, 2003 at 0:40
Well I can say that this cd is somewhat enjoyable. Mnnn one thing missing from this cd though.. however Its obvious Gil Moore wanted major control of singing/writing because his lyrics are "gypies on a run' and that kinda hippie/white trash thing thing is old and dampers the whole cd and its filled in many songs. His singing is very boring and monotonus/one dimensional as his stuff was with the other Triumph releases but I bought those to listen to Rik not this boring singer."Child in the City"

From: Mike Date: January 28, 2004 at 0:44
I met Phil X at a party and he said this album is crap. Enough said.

From: Metal Pete Date: January 28, 2004 at 17:02
I forgot they even released this one, it's so bad. Certainly it must be out of print? Hope so. And you know what? Let's face it, RIK EMMETT WAS TRiumph, mmkay? ;-)

From: Steve Date: January 31, 2004 at 0:08
I met Rik Emmett at a bar mitzvah in Cleveland and he said this CD sucks big time.

From: AOR freaky Date: February 2, 2004 at 5:43
Dear Steve, don't believe Rik Emmett ! This is a good CD from the guys, not their best (at their peak, they were a top act !), but worth having. Of course Rik says this, he hates his former mates and everything he did with them ! But look at his solo releases ! That's what I call : pure CRAP ! He should better keep his mouth ! Triumph was a fantastic act !

From: Great Dane Date: February 2, 2004 at 8:23
true AOR. This is a great cd. Rik's releases are truely a huge waste of money.

From: Dave Date: February 4, 2004 at 1:28
Let's look at the facts, boys and girls - Triumph had one album without Rik Emmett, and guess which album was their poorest selling album? That's right, the one without Rik Emmett. A coincidence? I think not. Let's face it, Rik Emmett WAS Triumph - mmmmmkay?

From: Waylon 92 Date: June 12, 2004 at 22:47
I saw Triumph live on this tour and they were pretty good. I don't know who they had singing the Rik Emmit stuff but as best as I can recall the guy was pretty good. I just wish I could have seen the original band. This cd is ok though not as good as their other releases and once in a while I give it a spin.

From: Ratt72 Date: August 22, 2004 at 1:36
Some people dont like this cd, just because there's not Rik Emett on the six strigs, its stupid the new guy is a great guitar player, sure they lost a main writter, but its not a bad album really

From: Geoff Date: August 30, 2004 at 2:27
I don't see the problem here. It is a well played melodic / commercial hard rock CD. While it might not be the same as past Triumph releases, I think it's a solid CD. 'It's over' is actually my favourite Triumph song of all and a gem worth the price alone. Elsewhere it's pretty good solid hard rock. I also really dig 'Turn my back on love'. Cool stuff. I like it, great sound. BTW, I agree Rik's solo stuff is shit.

From: Que? Date: January 2, 2005 at 6:45
Rik Emmett was Triumph? Some said Dave was Van Halen too.

From: Baris Date: January 9, 2005 at 9:37
The sound and production are OK. Maybe in terms of melody it can be called as an ordinary-average album, but not that bad either. A typical mid-way album. Despite I don't need to listen to it too much, I cannot call it as stinking also. When you hear, it feels that these guys can produce much better. The playing is talented but lacking sth. It goes between AOR and solid hard-rock tunes. Personally AOR tunes are better. Maybe the wrong thing is that the songs are too much typical. At most 6/10

From: Big Papa K Date: April 20, 2005 at 15:32
I never really cared for Gil Moore's songs until Sport Of Kings and Surveillance. I was hoping this would be an album full of songs like those. Unfortuantely, we get the bad side of Gil Moore songs, the ones that sound very dated and full of cliches. As mentioned above "Somewhere Tonight" is the standout track and "Turn My Back On Love" and "It's Over" are also good, but the rest is hard to get through. 3/10

From: Remastered Reason Date: January 15, 2006 at 2:13
Not that bad? It's like being right-handed & having to write with your left. No really, it's decent in places but Emmett is surely missing from the equation. Emmett was more than 1/3 of Triumph!

From: Heavy.AOR Date: July 10, 2006 at 11:52
GOLD 9/10, Pretty cool Hard Rock.

From: underworld king Date: December 13, 2007 at 3:52
Not a bad album but Rick Emmitt's vocals are missed. All in all a good album though.

From: Brother Cane Date: November 19, 2010 at 5:58
one of the best cds for me in veign of Winger, Harem Scarem, Saints & Sinners, Aldo Nova, Unruly Child, Baton Rouge, Europe and some other Scandi greats I don't miss Rik Emmetts vocals (on some cds close to Ted Nugent's screams ...) and solos, Moore's voice sound better and even someone said that Phil X said shit about this, I don't care, the guitar parts are way better than those of his predecessor if that's ordinary and average cd from early nineties I wish all to be like this one the best (sounding) hard rock and AOR was out starting '88 until '93-94 and the best produced ones (prisoners in paradise, up from the ashes, don't tread, pull, revenge, ...) I don't care it doesn't sound much like Triumph (I love most of their cds, '84 especially, except for some sissy weird vocals of Emmett and lousy "solos"), just entered in my top ten cds

From: the rocker Date: November 19, 2010 at 15:30
I agree with you Brother Cane, this cd is awesome! Not in the same vain as traditional Triumph(which I do like as well). This is much more in the style that I like to listen to.

From: underworld king Date: January 29, 2011 at 22:26
No Rik Emmet but all in all a hard rocking release that came out at the height of the grunge era. Caught the band in concert and was impressed by the show with my only complaint being that they did not play Child of the City. I listen to this cd quite often and for me this one sits pretty well with the rest of their classic cd's.

From: Nick C Date: February 2, 2011 at 22:15
Much better than I was expecting after reading the comments. I was wary but I rate Phil X as a guitarist (especially with Powder), and I needed this to finish off my Triumph collection(with the exception of the U.S. Festival and King biscuit live ones) so had to get it really. But it's turned out to be a pretty pleasant surprise and it rocks pretty hard - not the greatest Triumph album, but no disaster either.

From: rick kerch vzla Date: April 6, 2011 at 13:14
Great solid album!!!...shamely without the mighty Rik Emmet on board but quite good indeed...my faves are "Black Sheep","Boy's Nite Out" & "Love In A Minute" but add to that "Child Of The City","Turn My Back On Love" & the rocking one "Troublemaker"...perfect album that like underworld king said, came out at the time grunge was taking over all radio stations....and in my case i'd say also washing people's brains...95/100

From: the rocker Date: December 11, 2011 at 19:06
I love this cd! I know true Triumph fans don't care for this, but I do. More of a melodic rock cd than what they usually put, and I like some of their older stuff also. Turn My Back On Love, It's Over, Somewhere Tonight, Child Of The City, Love In A Minute, & Boys Nite Out are my picks. I recommend!
