A little more pop than the early stuff but if you like Journey, Foreigner, Styx.... you will like this offering. .38 will always put out great albums with pop hooks and southern boogie. Sometimes you have to look harder for the boogie in the albums form the mid 80's but even the later 90's had a strong soughern feel with Donnie's songs being the strongest.

como suenan a AOR estos fantasticos sureņos!!

From: koogles Date: March 9, 2004 at 18:15
.38 Special played it extra safe on this release. A better title might have been "By the Numbers". Nothing bad on this CD, just a calculated, board-room follow-up to "Tour De Force". With the exception of the great "Like No Other Night", this CD suffers from too many songs sounding the same.

Very polished AOR with perfect production

From: 80sMetal1 Date: June 27, 2004 at 4:57
Just another great release from these guys. And I love the videos, Donnie just jumping all over the stage in "Somebody Like You" which is my favorite song on here. "Like No Other Night" is a great rocker too.

From: Rycheage Date: June 27, 2004 at 18:08
This album begins with three classic AOR tracks in a row. 'Somebody Like You' waves the anthem flag proudly, while 'Like No Other Night' flies in at mid tempo. 'Last Time' features another anthemic chorus rising out of a hookladen mid tempo verse, a genuine classic. The melodic rumble of 'Heart's On Fire' is thoroughly AOR, while 'Against The Night' is a joyous uptempo AOR workout with all the hooks and melodies. 'Never Give An Inch' seals precedings with a final anthem chorus.

MUY BUEN DISCO DE UN BUEN GRUPO SUREŅO PERO EN ESTE DISCO EL POP/AOR SE NOTA CON MAS INTENSIDAD MI DISCO FAVORITO DEL GPO Y UNO DE LOS DISCOS CONSAGRADOS DEL AOR. 1986, !!!QUE GRAN AŅO!!!

First .38 Special album that I purchased. I was not disappointed. I seen them on tour that year too. Good show. Very entertaining. Good album too. The hits are there with Somebody Like You, Like No Other Night and One in a Million. Quite enjoyable.

Yeah Great Classic of AOR with touches of southern rock. Un gran album seņores un AOR muy bueno con sus toques de rock sureņo, sin duda el album mas completo del grupo y el mejor. en temas Somebody Like You(uno de los clasicos del grupo) y Against the Night(mis favoritos), Never Give an Inch, Once in a Lifetime, Like No Other Night, Just a Little Love, Last Time como lo dije muy completo, un clasico dentro del AOR, asi que este tampoco debe faltar en tu coleccion, te gustara.

Another great release and as with the previous 4 releases, sticks with pretty much the same sound - 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' definately being the motto here. Another release choc full of great commercial AOR/southern rock songs - 'Someboby Like You', 'Like No Other Night' & the albums choice pick 'Never Give An Inch'. A Great album by a Great Band!!

Nothing as standout as on previous albums but still in same kinda vein. Overall, worth a spin every blue moon.

From: barker Date: November 7, 2008 at 15:01
Yes they played it safe on this one but still a great listen and far more AOR than Southern rock - rather like Van Zant. Excellent.

From: BDrums1971 Date: November 4, 2010 at 1:27
I looked at the people who have left a rating, and I saw Nookiexx left a 20! What's with these IDIOTS leaving ridiculously low numbers just because they don't like a certain cd. If you have to rate it at 20, you obviously don't like this style, so don't even vote. If I really hate a cd, I won't vote, since it's not my style of music. I know ratings don't mean much, but it just irks me that people can be so stupid to rate so low (especially on what I think is a good recording!).

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: November 4, 2010 at 9:56
So people should only leave ratings if they like a CD, so as to keep the ratings unnaturally high?

From: rick kerch vzla Date: November 4, 2010 at 12:55
I'd rather say that this is one of 38 Special's finest releases rather than saying that this is the best one of their discography..obviously the AOR spark helps and instantly can become an essential album to have...as Rafo Phoenix said and is not a secret to anyone that 38 Special addopted the AOR vibe to their southern rock roots with unimaginable results (many bands of the same genre has done the same and i can name Molly Hatchet,Point Blank,Blackfoot and so on)and obtain a major success in their career, wich i entirely applaud!...tracks such as "Somebody Like You" & "Like No Other Night"(this one is a killer song) are top notch in the AOR territory and might appeal to any real AOR lovers out there...the album in its all offer great production and well structured songs,in general lines is worth having it!.90/100

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: November 5, 2010 at 20:19
I dunno, man, it seems like 38 Special were teh ONLY southern-rock band to find success by embracing a more AOR sound. Molly Hatchet's "The Deed Is Done" and Blackfoot's "Siogo" and especially "Vertical Smiles" came as those bands were on the way down, and their new synth-laced, poppy sound, I had always heard, was more or less forced on them by the label. Not only that, those records did nothing for their popularity, as they enjoyed none of the top40 success that 38 Special did. Kinda makes you wonder if Skynyrd would've headed down a similar path had they been alive and intact in the early '80's. Jaded fuck that i am, I bet they would've.

From: rick kerch vzla Date: November 5, 2010 at 20:30
Kinda agree with ya Doughouse Reilly...from those southern rock acts that addopted the AOR sound to their music direction, the only one that probably obtained the "full eyes" of the Record Labels was the 38's...but probably because the band did really want to break through and well as a matter of fact, the song "Teacher Teacher" from a movie soundtrack of the same name brought them success somehow...apart from that, well we have to admit or IMHO that is quite pleasant the "noise" the band did on this release...

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: November 6, 2010 at 1:07
Yeah, man, and 38 Special were always more AOR-leaning than those other bands, even on their first couple records that were as close to the "old" style of southern rock as they ever got, they still had more of a pop sheen. I guess they were supposed to be an "updated" Skynyrd for the '80's. Those other bands, Hatchet and Blackfoot, that's not what they did, so when they tried it, not only did they not want to do it, but it didn't sound natural. It happened to a lot of non-southern '70's rock bands in the '80's: somebody discovered the keyboards. Shit, look at Heart. You went from "Barracuda" to dentist-office music like "These Dreams."

From: rick kerch vzla Date: November 6, 2010 at 10:49
Exactly brother!!!..Heart is a real example of how to change your music from rocking tunes to keyboarded dentist-office music....funny yet true...well maybe we have to give Heart the benefit of the doubt..i knew sooner or later "these dreamy girls" were goin' to approach a more commercial side...bad or good?..is your choice...cheers mate!

From: 707STAR Date: November 17, 2011 at 16:14
ANOTHER CLASSIS SOUTHERN ROCK GEM. PERFECT FOLLOW UP ALBUM FROM ONE OF THE SOUTHERN BANDS. JUST AS GOOD AS THEIR LAST ALBUM. SEE EM LIVE.

From: edwithmj Date: June 18, 2019 at 18:25
My least favourite 38 Special album. We have a tired band playing the same formula of songs again - except this time, it doesn't work too well. The first two songs are decent enough but sound very similar and then the album slips further into mediocrity. For fans of Van Zant's vocals, he only sings on the final two songs, which I'd say improve the album towards the end if you can sit through the album patiently. It's understandable why Don Barnes wanted to leave after this one and why the band needed some new blood with Max Carl for the next two albums. My favourites are Somebody Like You and Never Give an Inch.

From: rocksedano Date: October 10, 2020 at 15:36
"Like no other night" is the best song of the band. Avegage album.

From: hair metal again Date: June 2, 2023 at 12:47
very good release once again for 38 SPECIAL offering their aorish arena rock with a slight southern feel as they mostly did in the 80s !Strength In Numbers is good but not great with the songs somehow being the same and they seem to repeat them selves ,,there s a certain quality of course and some good songs like "somebody like you" and "last time"!good stuff more or less
