Marillion have always been a class-A band who consistently make brilliant albums. Top-notch musicianship, lush song structures -- beautiful stuff. And although I'm probably in the minority, I was pleased when Steve Hogarth came on board, as Fish's vocals drove me nuts. This is probably my favorite Marillion album (alongside "Clutching At Straws"). The definitive Marillion elements are all present: mellow, Pink Floyd-like dreaminess, silky smooth performances, and smart, thought-provoking lyrics -- but you also get a few ripping guitars ("The Uninvited Guest") and what amounts to Marillion's concept of an up-tempo rocker ("Hooks In You"). Yes, I have to be in the right frame of mind to dig into any Marillion release lest I find myself getting bored (you won't find yourself blasting it out the windows as you cruise the highway), but when the headphones are on and I'm focused I usually find myself newly amazed at what they're able to achieve. This album is reliable for that. 95 / 100 |

Out is the popular Fish, in Steve Hogarth. That didn't stop Marillion though. Musically it's a continuation of Clutching, but h sounds so different it gives the band a completely new sound. And in my opinion an even better sound! Great album! |
