The lads return with their sixth album, and I'm a little disappointed. The music is mostly there, though the production sounds more raw. But we start off with two very cheesy songs in the almost-title-track "Let's Wake Up This Town" (yes, AND turn it upside-down, by playing our music loud!) and "Back To The 1970's." I liked Tom Rampton on his first couple outings with the band, but he gets on my nerves here literally from the first seconds of the disc. He seems to spend a lot of time howling at the very top of his vocal register, and it gets grating after not very long. Plus, his vocals are very prominent in the mix, which highlights the often dumb or cliched lyrics. "When The Thunder And Lightning" strike is the best song in the first half, and luckily the album finishes with a strong run of four songs. |
