First off let me state that i am NOT a huge Stan Bush fan. I like a lot of his music but wouldn't call myself a huge fan. Stan Bush has released some really great songs during the course of his career, but in my opinion has pretty much always failed to deliver a truly classic album. The closest the guy has come to acheiving a classic release was possibly 1987's Barrage album. Forward to 2014 and his latest album 'The Ultimate' which although the title may be a bit misleading (it's NOT a compilation) it could well be his ultimate release. For me it is certainly NOT a barnstorming classic, but Bush's finest hour? well, possibly. One of the problems i have always had with Bush's music is that a lot of it is very samey and that theme follows again on this cd. 'Something to believe' and the title song kick off the album is good ol' Stan style, great musically but lyrically its the same old cliched stuff. 'Heat of the battle' could well be the new 'Touch', a real AOR rocker in every sense. |

The guitar intro to 'Stand In The Fire' is almost identical to the title track, i seriously thought it was the same song. The chorus to 'Unstoppable is a total cringefest. It's a decent song let down by a pretty dreadful chorus. The cd gets back on track with 'Thunder In Your Heart' and 'The Journey' before bowing out with a mid paced rocker 'The Memory Of You' and a run of the mill AOR ballad 'If I'm Not Lovin You' which is pleasant enough on the ear but really doesn't go anywhere and certainly is no 'Love Don't Lie'. The album finishes with yes you guessed it ANOTHER version of his biggest and most well known song 'The Touch'. When is Stan's obsession with this song going to diminish? Overall it's a good AOR album, no doubt about that, and as i said earlier it could well be Bush's finest album to date but it's still some way off being the classic that even i reckon he is possible of producing, just as long as someone else writes the lyrics. |

It took 4 years for Mr Bush to release a new album and as usual he's kept the essence of his sound almost intact...not as solid IMHO as some of his previous efforts though but still pleasant enough for AOR lovers everywhere(isn't it?)...best tracks for me are "Heat Of The Battle","Love Again"(nice),"Unstoppable","Thunder In Your Heart"(great cover originally of John Farnham),"The Journey" & "If I'm Not Lovin' You"...85/100 |
