This is the bands fourth studio album. Because of lack of money Tony Clarkin had to produce this album himself. The result is that the sound is somewhat disappointing, but the songwriting is still impeccable. My favorites songs are The Prize, Vicious Companions, So Far Away & The Word. 9/10

I actually like this one better than their classic "Chase The Dragon"...The songs seem more persistent and memorable...

Doesn't quite have the classics that graced other Magnum albums (tracks like Kingdom of Madness, Great Adventure, Sacred Hour and Les Morts Dansant) but overall it is a memorable experience. fascinating cover art by the brilliant Rodney Matthews as well - who went on to provide perhaps the ultimate cover for the ultimate album, 'On A Storyteller's Night'! Oh - perhaps you haven't heard.... MAGNUM'S NEXT ALBUM 'BRAND NEW MORNING' IS DUE OUT IN MAY!

My favorite Magnum album. All the songs are great and never get stale. Production is a little flat, but the songs and performances shine through regardless.

In my opinion this and Storyteller's Night are Magnum at their peak, a perfect blend of melody, progression and aggresssion, and very accessable as well.

Strange how tastes differ, especially towards this one, as I feel this is by far the worst Magnum album they have ever released. After the most excellent 'Chase The Dragon', this was a BIG BIG let down in all departments, but thankfully they returned to form big time for the mega 'On A Storytellers Night' album. Play all three of these albums back to back and the 'Quality' issue with this one is clear for all to see!!.

From: pompeius Date: November 28, 2005 at 2:52
I think part of the reason for a difference of opinion on this one is the sound quality. I am immune to such considerations because I am deef from 35 years of metal, plus I can't afford a quality sound system. Everything sounds poorly recorded to me! I really do like this collection of songs though.

Awesome, is the word for this release. Along with "Chase The Dragon" the best effort by this band and both albums are in my top 20, maybe even top 10, of all time. Incredible songwriting and performances as well. Sure, the sound/production could've been improved...still not that bad for the year it was recorded in. QUALITY!!!!

From: AORvault Date: June 7, 2011 at 5:02
Good songs but a poor production let's this one down. The first Magnum album I ever bought and I'm still holding on.

From: rbrigade Date: August 15, 2013 at 5:04
Major let down compared to the debut or Chase the dragon. A shame because this was the last 70's sounding album of Magnum. I'm not saying it's bad, there's just no top shelf material here.

My introduction to a great band got off to a rocky start when I bought this disappointing album brand-spanking-new on (imported!) vinyl back in 1983 -- what self-respecting 18-year-old AOR/Hard Rock/Metal lover could resist that fantastic Rodney Matthews cover? A crying shame the contents were such a let down -- they warded me off any other Magnum releases for a good many years. To my ears only "Young and Precious Souls," "The Word" and "Hit and Run" are worthwhile efforts amongst a morass of sub-par Clarkin output. Plus Catley sounds a bit crusty and lax, not the fabulous vocalist he would prove on later releases. And PLEASE keep Clarkin as far away from production responsibilities as possible -- the sound of this album is a frightful mess. Thankfully they would redeem themselves a couple years later with the legendary "On A Storyteller's Night," so salvation was just around the corner. It took me a while to get there, but I'm better off now for giving them a second chance. 65 / 100.

pretty good release for MAGNUM back in 83 with sensational musicianship but unfortunately no big songs!as a whole The Eleventh Hour is solid ,but on the other hand when the cd is off you cant sing a melody or a chorus easily!"hit and run","the word" and "the prize' are the highlights
