Killer AOR that was a commercial comeback, and then some, for Toto. "Africa" is a FASCINATING song, lyrically and rhythmically. "Rosanna" is irresistable as well with the best vocal ideas I've ever heard from Toto. "I Won't Hold You Back" is one of the dramatic ballads ever written by anyone. Some of the album tracks are a bit iffy but this CD has WAY more ups than downs. A Grammy winner and a HANDS-DOWN classic.

An AOR classic, and one of Toto's best albums.Africa is the most well known track, and is still as evocative and stirring as ever.Rosanna is a great leadoff song;Make Believe and I Won't Hold You back are among the other great tracks.Perhaps only 1 or 2 are sub-excellent. The band display the kind of stellar musicianship one expects of LA session players, and Toto IV is peppered with elaborate guitar and keyboard solos.Luke is a great guitarist, while Dave Paich is a master of the keys. AOR classic.

GENIOS!!!!!!!

From: Andre Tekken Date: November 11, 2002 at 8:41
Their signature album! Also their best selling release! On this one they`ve found great balance between mature songwritting,as musicianship, with pop-classic all time hits as Rosanna!!The whole album still shows some of Toto`s quite prog-jazzistic past as a spice to new radio anthems! But Africa is the highlight of this effort, with it`s epic, anthemic, gloomy, misterious atmosphere!!A single tune can surely bring you to another level!90 out of 10!Essential to ANY rock collection!!

AFRICA is my favorite song from TOTO. My dad loves TOTO and he got me hooked!

From: Blaster Date: March 11, 2004 at 4:53
South Park was right, everyone loves Toto, and this album was the reason. Gotta love Africa and I Won't Hold You Back, this album is sequenced perfectly. They never even came close to topping this one.

Fundamental.

This is an alltime classic, period. I'll be short, for those who have it like me, i salute them, for those younger who are new into this kind od music, BUY IT, BUY IT and then again BUY IT!!

From: Rycheage Date: August 17, 2004 at 23:39
This is indeed an all-time classic. "Rosanna", "Africa", "Make Believe" and "I Won't Hold You Back" are exquisite AOR. This album defies all reviews because IMO there is nothing wrong with it. High quality stuff and highly recommended!!

From: TIM (2) Date: August 18, 2004 at 4:09
This one certainly deserves its 'classic' status. "I Won't Hold you Back" is awesome, as is "Africa" (which they surely tried to copy with "Home of the Brave" from their "Seventh One" album, they sound remarkably similar..). You can get most Toto albums for hardly anything now, and I would recommend all their 80's albums to any AOR fan, with this one surely being their peak. 10/10.

Classic - no more, no less. The benchmark for Westcoat/ AOR, and a cd that they (& most others) will probably never better, (although they have come close on 2 or 3 occassions - Fahrenheit, Isolation, 7th One). This one has everything, perfect playing, songs, production. In this day and age you can't say that about many releases. Not many albums get a 10 from me, but this is one of them. If you haven't got a copy shame on you.

If we ever get invaded by aliens, and they want to know what AOR is, hand them a copy of this album. Brilliant!

IMPRESCINDIBLE

Fantastic album. Great songs with hooks, melody and great performance. A Must Have. 100/100

6 Grammmies, two timeless classics and the critices hated it like nothing else. What else is there to say? It's probably THE album that defined what the public thought when it comes to TOTO. If only there was a real rocker here, so the "Soft Rock"-stigma would've never appeared... Still, there are a lot of great songs like Lovers in the Night, Afraid of Love, Make Believe, Rosanna and It's a Feeling. I think Africa was always one of the weaker songs or let's say every Live version and especially the one from TOTO XX blows the studio version away.

From: hair metal again Date: February 7, 2015 at 16:28

This release put Toto at its highest peak even though since Record number one the band had achieved a really stand out in credibility as musicians and composers, music wise everywehere, indeed this one displays good Westcoast/Lite/AOR oriented pieces of music...my faves are the mega hits "Rosanna","Africa","Make Believe" & "I Won't Hold You Back"(beautiful song)...86/100

From: petermexico13 Date: October 4, 2016 at 12:50

Look, I get it: Toto is a band full of "musician's musicians." Steve Lukather is a shredder. The guys played on everybody else's albums. And on and on and blabbity blabbity boopity bop. I don't care how accomplished the players are or how many Grammys it won—I fucking hate this music! This is Nyquil for the ears. It's just begging for somebody to interrupt it every thirty seconds to say your call is very important and someone will be with you shortly. Toto is the house band at your dentist's office. At best, it's a soundtrack for sex your mom's best friend. Back in the day I mean—she's probably almost 70 now. We've all probably heard Rolling Stone's comparison of Toto with a Velveeta-orange leisure suit, but I also like Dave Mustaine's line about how the Musician's Institute was "where you went to learn how to play Toto songs at weddings and graduation parties." There just aren't enough ways for me to describe the skull-hammering DULLNESS of this Muzak.
