This album defines 80's hard rock/metal!! This is Def Leppard's best album!! It is right up there with Pyromania!! If you have High n Dry and Pyromania, then you have just about the best hard rock collection-EVER!! THE absolute best 80's rock!!!!!!!!!

I find it humorous that anyone would have the gull OR audacity, for that matter, to think much less SAY that either Def Leppard's 1st or 2nd albums are their best or even one of their best. That is total bullshit. And if I don't remember correctly, Def Leppard didn't have any sort of golden days w/ their 1st records--this was the band's starting point, not their peak in achieving true musical genius. W/ PYROMANIA & HYSTERIA they established themselves as the greatest pop metal group of all time.

I am not a big fan of Def Leppard, BUT...I have to say that 'Let It Go' is one hell of a great song. Robert John 'Mutt' Lang is some kind of a god. He can turn a pile of crap into Def Leppard.

you know, it always amazes me how everytime you mention this group, the first album people start raving about is either pyromania or hysteria. I hate that, lets face it, pyromania was a great album, but compared to high N' Dry, it wasn't that great. High N' Dry was the album which there songwriting and song structure improved, but they were still raw and heavy. Lets face it, they lost a lot of that on pyromania, and just about all of it on hysteria.High N' Dry will always be their best PERIOD!!

Now this is Def Leppard at it's best. Although this album lacked the commercial appeal that Pyromania had, it didn't need it. This album still stands well on it's own. High N Dry is straight-forward, no frills hard rock that polished to the bone. Still today, this album sounds fresh and original and not many bands can come close to this kind of sound. High N Dry is AWESOME!!!!!!

Now this is why I WAS a fan. The CD smokes. Before they became a pop rock band they were a real hard rock band! Give this CD a listen and you'll realize why they made it big later. I'll take the 1st three CD's from this band and call the rest pop crap. What happened to the balls in their music?

This is truly a classic. Joe roars and the riffs are awesome - you can hear they are influenced by Lizzy and the Young-brothers. Terrific stuff! Simply their best album followed by Hysteria and Pyromania. Since then it's been a downhill ride... You should definitely buy this one. And by the way,dokken6008, you haven't got a clue.

Very good hard rock album. Can't beat Pyromania or Hysteria, but I think this is their third best album. Songs like High 'n Dry, Let It Go and Mirror Mirror are true hard rock entertainment from 1981.

in an interview i read with the band, they said they were playing about half this album on the X tour. by the way, didn't Mutt produce this album? I think so. Mutt didn't kill Def Leppard

All this album is great! LADY STRANGE is a hell of a song, very cool. This is their last 'heavy' album. PYROMANIA and HYSTERIA were classics, but too produced, and so their other albums that came after. Don't get me wrong...I love this band and everything they do is great!

Without question the BEST album the Lepers ever made. Heavy, with attitude, even the 'ballad' (bringing on the heartbreak') kicks major azz!! They were at the top of their game here, although they achieved more success with the next two albums. I was just blasting 'Let it go' the other day. It defies logic that a band that rocked this good could ever record a fuggin mistake of a song like 'Have you ever needed someone so bad'. More like 'Have you ever forgot how to record a cool song or even come up with an original title'!! Ugh. I will live on past glory daze of the Leps, but their present world is a sad one indeed.

This would be Def Leppard at their heaviest. Mutt Lange turns their sound into AC/DC like and that leads to lots of great riffs and strong choruses. The first side is very strong. 8/10

Wow,this album rocks and i think its their heaviest one,no doubt but not the best-that price would go to either pyromania or hysteria. It seems to be me their album is getting weaker and more melodic. Pyromania was weaker than this while hysteria is weaker than both and adrenalize the weakest among them. Bringing on the heartbreak is a great ballad while songs like hit and run,no no no and switch 625 are awesome rockers. ratings:8.9/10

Get 'Mutt' back on board and ROCK!! This album is the most explosive Leppard yet. 'Let It Go', 'Lady Strange', 'Mirror, Mirror' and 'On Through The Night' just absolutely come screaming out of your speakers and 'Bringing On The Heartbreak' is in a league of its own as far as ballads go. Very good release. I didn't like Joe Elliot's vocals on this disc, but 'Bringin' on the heartbreak' is a wonderful track and there are some cool melodic hard rockers here. My 2nd least favourite Def lep disc, but a good one.

I agree with gener8tr there. Although high'n'dry never sold as much as hysteria,it was a much better effort than the dreaded,pop-orientated,sold-out hysteria. Although not as polished(which can be a good thing),this song was more consistent and the intensity level and songwriting was equally superb. hit and run and on though the night displayed the kind of energy level that new wave of british metal band should.High and dry is a song worthy to be put in AC/DC's excellent back in black album

Switch 625 was a nice instrumental track while you got me running got great strong riffs and solo in it. Even the ballad bringing on theheartbreak was pretty good too. Enough said! This album is an instant metal classic that deserve much more appreciation,respect and approval than it usually does. As a metal head myself,i give this album a big thumbs up. Ratings:10/10.

After hearing Pyromania, I quickly picked up this release (the re-release with 2 bous tracks) to help satisfy my Lep fix. This one did it. High'n'Dry (Saturday Night) is awesome track but Bringin' on the Heartbreak was my fav. When I see these guys live they always do it accoustic though. I'd love to hear them play the way it was recorded.

THis is DEF LEPPARDS peak. THey are at they hardest hitting on this album. If you like to ROCK, (not play dolls like dokken 2008) than this is the best album they made. Pyromania is a classic killer album too but just a notch down from this one. Everything after Pyromania just sucks unless your a teenage girl, so go pour some sugar on yourself and try to get rocked, believe me, it ain't gonna happen.

Interesting comments on this release. I must admit to being a huge Def Lep fan up to the 'adrenalize' outing that I think is weak and of course they never put out a decent release again. Anyway 'High & Dry' was the first release I bought back when it first came out and it blew me away. As much as I love 'Pyromania' & 'Hysteria' I still look at 'High & Dry' as my favorite by a slight margin.....

I love this one because the band still had that raw side and energy, but Mutt Lange polished it off beautifuly in the studio and created what I feel is a killer rock record. The first half of this album is absolutely flawless in every way. 'Let It Go', 'Hit And Run', 'High And Dry', and 'Bringing On The Heartache' are among the finest this band has ever done and the first three are among the hardest as well. The only problem is the drop off in quality during the second half. Still great stuff!!!

...and not just the best Def Leppard album...'THE' best album... ever. It's the pinnacle of hard rock music...and music in general...at least to me. It's flawless. Great songs. Great vocals. Big Guitars. The guitar sound is almost like Thin Lizzy meets 'Highway to Hell' era AC/DC. Steve Clark is a riff God... and this is Def Leppard at their absolute finest. Also...Joe Elliot really began to develop his sound and singing style on this one...which was probably thanks to Mutt Lange's guidance. Sure, 'Pyromania' is the reason why I started listening to them in the first place (when I was 9 years old), and 'Hysteria' was an excellent, monsterous hit album for them...but 'High 'N' Dry' is why they are my favorite band of all time.

This is the best album by far. I used to like Pyromania and Hysteria A LOT but since I heard this I can't hear them again. This is just pure classic AC/DC, thin lizzy style classic rock. Kicking out Pete Willis was the worst thing this band did! He rocks! Phil Collen just doesn't compare! Brilliant

Mirror mirror, Lady strange, Bringing on the heartbreak, Switch 625. Divine hard rock/melodic metal. Those were almost the last great songs they ever recorded. After that they are just a huge disappointment with just a couple of good songs left

I have my own personal list of top 10 hard rock/heavy metal albums of all time and this is easily in the top 5!!! This is truly one of those albums that was far before it's time. And you listen to it and you think to yourself, "Does it get any better than this?" And the answer is...no it doesn't. This is one of those kick ass albums that you listen to from front to back...from the first chords of 'Let It Go' to Joe Elliott screaming "No, no, no, no, no" over and over and over again on the final track. And it's at that point that you want to play it all over again because you can't believe what you just heard. A heavy metal masterpiece and Def Leppard's best album ever! If you like those pop rock radio tunes on Hysteria, Adrenalize and The Sparkle Lounge, then this album is NOT for you! This is when the Leps were just young men who were ready to punch a whole in the world. And they did just that!!

This is a classic for me. Mutt did a great job with the leps.Maybe he wanted the band to be a more melodic AC/DC,but the Leps had their own approach for the songs. You can also notice that Joe Elliott's voice on this is way better than on "On Through The Night" record. This disc has great melodic rockers like "Lady Strange" (love that guitar riff),"You Got Me Runnin","Mirror,Mirror","Switch 625"(How I Miss Steve) and the classic ballad "Bringin' On The Heartbreak".Classic.

my fav is pyromania but this one is very good.i always loved their sound and they knew how to make great music.this one is closer to pyromania than to hysteria-which means it's heavier. my favs: Let it Go, High'n'Dry (Saturday Night), Lady Strange and No No NO

I started out as a Hysteria fan, since it was my first Def Lep album, when I was a kid. Twenty years later, and High 'n' Dry is easily my most-played DL disc. At this point, they're like a more melodic AC/DC, with very similar guitar riffs and tones, but now we have the layered vocals the band will become so famous for. There's not a bad song on this record, but I've always liked "Let It Go," "Lady Strange," "Mirror Mirror" and the great ballad "Bringin' On The Heartache."

Agree with 'ya King. This record just smokes....while I know some feel Pete Willis brought a raunchier sound to the Lepps, Phil Colleen brought them musicianship and the push needed to gain worldwide appeal (and be a grown up band.) My two cents...

Their best album full of hard rock gems before they gradually became more commercial. Stand outs are "Another hit & run", "High & dry", "Bringin' on the heartbreak", "Lady strange" & "Mirror mirror". I remember buying it on the day of release & still one of my all time faves

I'm with 'ya "elljam," I was at a local record store, heard Lady Strange and immediately went to the Leppard bin and bought it! Let it Go is one of the best rock tunes ever!

My favorite Def Leppard album. Their later (and also excellent) Pyromania and Hysteria are possibly better , but I like this rawer style better.

This is more Melodic Hard Rock than AOR but it is also a Masterpiece. Very melodic and raw with a lot of hooks. A must have. 95/100

A better release than the first one and with the band approaching a bit more of a commercial side in their music..."Let It Go","Bringin'On The Heartbreak"(a major hit now and then)& "Mirror Mirror(Look Into My Eyes)" are my faves...tracks 2,6 & 7 are also good ones...87/100

not their best record cause we have four fillers,tracks 5.8.10 and 12 (japan reissue).the other songs are really excellent.in this time def leppard were some precursors of melodic hard rock.this record start their brilliant and exceptionnal career.one of the best band of the history.

The sophomore album with great Bon Scott style vocals sang by Joe Elliott! I totally believe this might be an AC/DC tribiute album because it sounds just like that. Anyway this one is a great one too as they strive more influences with a hard rock icon band!

a def masterpiece for DEF LEPPARD and a classic of the 80 s hard rock scene!more mature and hard rockin than their debut they ooefed a sensational electric and much energetic sound that is their trademark with marvelous guitar riffs and those unique strong back and front vocals and melodic lines!no fillers here ,this is flawless from start to finish!

Those that have not heard Def Leppards pre Pyromania albums are really missing out. Their early albums had much more of a metal edge and don't seem out of place with other heavy hitters in NWOBHM like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon and Motorhead. You can slap this album on and it won't seem out of place. Highly recommended.

Bringing On The Heartbreak was such an anthem and set the stage for Pyromania to explode. Steve Clark played with so much feeling. The hooks and accessibility were there but in my opinion this is Def Lep's heaviest album.
