Back in 2005 I preordered Devils playground with low expectations but was blown away by that album, to the point it was my album of the year, but with this album I think my expectations were even lower. Firstly because I knew it would be an incredibly difficult thing to match or better Devils Playground, and secondly because the lead single left me with mixed emotions. Now I have to say that the more I listened to Cant break me down, the more I loved it, so things started looking up. My first opinion of the album was that it wasnt as rock as Playground, but it still had that classic 80s Idol feel to it. There are maybe a few too many slower paced songs, but overall this is another great album, and proof that there is still life in the old dog. Unsurprisingly considering its released at the same time as his autobiography, there is a very autobiographical feel to most of the songs as well (hence the slower tracks).

Brilliant album from start to finish. A good mix of stuff on here from the very retro lead single 'Can't Break Me Down' through to the awesome 'Postcards From The Past', which is very 'Rebel Yell' part 2, 'Eyes Wide Shut', the poppy 'Bitter Pill' and the more mellow stuff, which is top quality too, especially 'Ghosts In My Guitar' and 'Love And Glory'. Good to see Steve Stevens back on here with a few lovely flourishes throughout the album and to top it off, there's a very nice Trevor Horn production job. 'Devils Playground' was a great comeback album, but this one is even better and his best album since 'Rebel Yell' back in the 80's

Well said so far, wrap CC and Jez' above reviews together & that there's a good reflection of this release. It has been suggested too Devil'sPlayground was deliberately rock focused while King&Queens was an open book. Speaking of books, considering Billy's autobiography is hitting shelves Kings&Queens plays straight outta those pages, honest reflection being the albums strength which alone steps up from his previous record. And that title track provides the best example of the albums content, Kings&Queens alone is Billy's story. Dislike the OTT pop chorus of lead single Can'tBreakMeDown but otherwise a fine enough tune. Jez accurately describes Postcards as another crack at the RebelYell template (as was Scream previously) & it's the best rocker here, another highlight is opener BitterPill & its wonderful Stevens solo. Yeah too ballad heavy but even those work OneBreathAway old school cool. Taken for what it is Billy has proven age be damned & delivered a solid record. Rating 8
