David hit pay dirt when he put this band together. Great players and great songs. He kept it going for one more release than hit a brick wall.

Awesome stuff!! 10/10

From: carnifex Date: April 13, 2004 at 7:47
Sobresaliente.

Perhaps one of the finest Van Halen albums ever recorded. (Yes, I realize it's not actually Van Halen, but man does it sound like 'em.) This CD rocks! Saw Roth, Vai, Sheehan and Bissonette on this tour as well. Quite the show!

It looks like Van Halen, sounds like Van Halen, but just does not feel like Van Halen. Dave continues the party rock image of his old band, but ends up sounding a little too much like a hair band here. Some great tunes on here like "Yankee Rose" and "Shyboy", but too many cover songs. 7/10

From: Dean Date: June 28, 2004 at 19:12
The ultimate party album. This one is a classic in my book. The interplay between Sheehan and Vai is unrivaled. 9/10

From: SPOTLIGHT Date: August 9, 2004 at 0:08
This was Diamond Dave's finest hour. This release featured everything that made his cool in VH. While I like some of the material that followed, I think Dave lost his edge. Kind of reminds me of Autograph. Had a lot of MUSICAL potential...just didn't have the lyrical strength to back it up.

From: gener8tr Date: October 18, 2004 at 9:40
One of tyhe highlights of 1986, and featured Dave at his best. Skyscraper was awesome as well, but Roth would never again reach such heights. I remember hearing "Yankee Rose" for the first time just after I graduated in June 1986 and thought to myself... Who is that guitar player? He's better than Eddie! Funny how certain things take you right back to a specific place in time, and "YR" takes me right back to a swealtering June day in Virginia in the summer of 1986. Great stuff!

From: Propane Date: December 3, 2004 at 11:04
Sheehan and Vai blew the roof off with such wizardry as this.

From: Metaldad Date: January 31, 2005 at 11:29
Perfect model on how to leave a GREAT band. You form one that has better musicians. Awesome band and two great albums. Saw this tour and Billy and Steve were AWESOME!!!But after the departure of Vai and Sheehan, Roth's career took a dive and has never recovered!

From: Blaster Date: February 24, 2005 at 21:35
This album is better than some of the more lackluster Roth-era albums even, he is really in top form. Steve Vai deserves a lot of credit for the great Van Halenesque guitar sounds. Goin' Crazy is a damn good (pun intended) arena rocker, with Shyboy and Yankee Rose as the hard rockers. Ladies Nite In Buffalo is my favorite on here, its got such a swinging vibe. Definitely get this album, its Daves solo best.

From: run2u Date: March 14, 2005 at 13:04

Yankee Rose!! Fuckin awesome, also like Shyboy and Goin Crazy.

From: wzcj02 Date: August 19, 2006 at 1:12
If this is DLR's best solo stuff then it's all sh1t. This is not heavy, it's not catchy, its not really even pop rock. It's so far from Van Halen it would make your head swing. CRAP CRAP CRAP. P1ss your money away if you must.....3/10.

From: rick kerch vzla Date: May 10, 2007 at 20:48
The wave started to raise for the great Diamond Dave when he presented this piece of rock history!.The songs were solid as hell and with that line-up was impossible to ignore such album."Yankee Rose","Shyboy","I'm Easy","Ladies Nite In Buffalo"(cool) & "Going Crazy"(amazing!)only to mention a few are timeless songs that will keep you rocking 4 the rest of your life.10/10

From: Metal T Date: May 11, 2007 at 19:57
Well...he didn't sell as many records after "Skyscraper" and "Eat Em' And Smile" but who gives a f**k! Like ive said before id personally take the "DLR Band" record over anything he's done solo. That thing is raw,a little rough around the edges-yet smokes! The stuff he did with "Vai" etc.. i believe was a bit overproduced. That said this is still a d*mn good album nonetheless.--

From: Remastered Reason Date: May 15, 2007 at 18:21
Stunning bunch of players here on this Roth solo cd. Wonder how he managed to get all these guys in one band. Anyway, this is Roth fresh out of Van Halen & it is a winner.

From: rick kerch vzla Date: June 13, 2007 at 22:20
I suppose he was kinda sensation at that time so having all these great musicians wasn't a difficult task to achieve!

From: shark attack Date: February 17, 2008 at 11:20
Diamond Dave puts together the dream band and together they explode onto disc with this superb musical smorgasbord of sounds that made VAN HAGER sound dull and conservative in comparison. Whilst the songs are a bit of a hit and miss affair, the playing of Vai and Sheehan in tandem with the big D more than compensates to provide the ultimate party mix tape. 90/100

From: jedilato Date: June 1, 2008 at 14:24
This is almost perfect!!!! The best album Dave put on the desk. Yankee Rose and Shyboy what a start for a record, whoa!!! They say the first impression is always the strongest, well when I heard these songs I was blown away imediately! And we haven't heard the best yet. For me the highlight of this album is Goin' Crazy. It's like an unreleased hit from the VH 1984 album, or it was written for the next one. But we can tell this about almost every song from this release! Masterpiece!!!! 9.5/10

From: pie75 Date: August 5, 2010 at 8:08
life for dave after van halen told me one thing without great musicians he didn't have the voice or talent to go any further a fairly limited singer in vocal range but good all the same with the right musos behind him therefore this is a great album when i first heard yankee rose it blew my head off other good songs include shy boy,i'm easy, going crazy and tobacco road

From: hair metal again Date: January 3, 2018 at 4:52
excellent release as expected for DAVID LEE ROTH with amazing musicianship and great songwriting!i d say that it s one of those releases ahead of its time and i can t find any similiar!Steve ,Billy &Gregg are among the best and the result is massive &flawless!"yankee rose","goin crazy" ,"bump &grind" and "big trouble" are great songs indeed!

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: January 3, 2018 at 11:55
Ahead of its time in what way? For doing covers of "standards" a decade before Rod Stewart made it his career path into the sunset? I don't hear it, dude. This sounds squarely rooted in the mid-'80's to me. A fun party record for sure, as Dave had something to prove (his output would decline quickly hereafter), but I'm not going to kid myself thinking it was anything groundbreaking or ahead of its time. The one thing you can say for sure is that it's David Lee Roth; his personality is the single biggest factor on the album. His band often comes off as like Van Halen Jr., which was probably the intent, at least for Dave.

From: hair metal again Date: January 4, 2018 at 8:38
ahead of its time in the way Dave and his superb band wrote the songs in a "twisted" way without following the standards of the mid 80 s !it s flawless and it goes without any particular song structure!can you state something else that it s similar to Eat Em And Smile approach, something i mean like a top class fun hair metal endless jam?anyway just my thoughts

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: January 4, 2018 at 15:45
I see your point. This definitely was different from any other '86 mainstream/hair-metal release. Honestly though, I just see it as a record that ONLY Dave could have made, at that time or any other. He'd probably cringe at calling it hair-metal (a fairly meaingless label that only got applied well after the fact, and really signifies nothing more than "mainstream hard rock from about 1983-1992). I never got the feeling tha tDave was particularly interested in hard rock or metal--it was just one of many types of music he loved and wanted to incorporate. Eat 'Em And Smile was able to exist because it was Dave, a big-name guy, with that personality, who was able to write his own ticket, so to speak, and be given the kind of freedom to make this type of record. We romanticize this period now, but if you're honest, you'll admit that the major labels were churning out a lot of very formulaic, cookie-cutter bands who haven't stood the test of time, much as we enjoyed them back then.

From: hair metal again Date: January 9, 2018 at 2:41
Yeap i agree that only because of Dave that happened ,but that s cool also!To be honest i believe that the hair metal movement was the best thing ever happened to the hard rock genre and will never be another era as great as that one!We got to the mainstream ,over pop acts and there was a lot of money thrown into bands of our beloved genre!I lived that era very close (even though i live in Athens Greece)and i must admt that i still like almost every tune of such bands!

From: Auslander Date: April 23, 2021 at 15:38
In the book Nothing But A Good Time, a true story is told about how David Lee Roth had a large pet monkey whom he wanted to be dressed in matching spandex pants and shirt as him as part of his stage show. The monkey was really unhappy getting measured up for his pants and got really pissed off with the tailor. He was slapping his hand away and eventually shat all over the floor in anger. Meanwhile Diamond Dave was doubled over in laughter.
