Didn't knwo if this mainstream rock band was gonna make it on this site but they do belong. This album may be one of the best releases of the year followed by Hinder and Daughtery. This album has great rockers like "Something In Your Mouth", "Burn It to the Ground" and "Shakin Hands". It also has a great well thought out ballad in "If Today was Your Last Day". I personally enjoy the song "This Afternoon" which carries a bit of a country sound (and I really dislike country music) but the lyrics are so spot on. I've found Nickelback to be a very thoughtful band not afraid to take a stance on any issue.

Sure, bands sporting this sound/style are now a dime (or should that be a nickle?) a dozen, but Kroeger & company do it far better than most, with an uncanny knack for killer commercial hooks that cause the songs to stick in your ears and head like filmy lace lingerie sticks to sweat-slick female flesh. The production from uber-producer Mutt Lange (AC/DC; Def Leppard) brings out the band's best on this CD, allowing songs like "Something in Your Mouth," "Burn it to the Ground," and "Shakin' Hands" (my personal favorite) to come roaring from the speakers like a rabid panther. For modern hard rock fans looking for beefy guitars and catchy songs, "Dark Horse" is one badass rock-n-roll steed you should be happy to hop on.

oh my! The opener is what rock n roll is about Heavy melodic NAUGHTY just ROCKS ! "Burn it to the ground" is also great From that place you have a little downhill but still the record is VERY GOOD all songs considered Much in the vain of HINDER and a little of COLLECTIVE SOUL at times. The "modernities" are there but not in excess that is why I'd say it is their best so far I just can't get enough of Something in your mouth !!!

Good solid hard rock disc, but not as good as 'All the right reasons', imo. The production is just immaculate and you can hear peices of Bryan Adams' 'Waking the neighbours' or Def Leppard's 'Adrenalize' all over this. Mutt's sound is unmistakable. Of the rockers, 'Shakin' hands' is my fave, but for me the ballads and mid-tempo numbers are the highlights of this disc. 'Gotta Be Somebody', 'I'd Come for You' and 'Never Gonna Be Alone' all steal the show for me. Good solid hard rock album.

Everyone who loves 80's Melodic Hard Rock, must open a bit his mind, and embrace this album. This is THE album where "our" genre starts again. Sure Hinder did something interesting with "Take it to the limit". Sure Whitesnake and Winger put out some of their best records ever, but it's with Nickelback that we're talking about future. It may not be a masterpiece, but certainly the fisrt stage of something that hopefully could bring to something "more" in the early future. It's a very important step, because for the first time a very succesfull band recovers a certain sound, recycling in their own way. No wonder why they teamed up with "Mutt" Lange. Of course Nickelback don't give up his sound, but that's the point. This band is re-inventing Pop-Metal. I would categorize Dark Horse as an 80's modern melodic hard rock album. Def Leppard, Ratt, early Kiss, Bryan Adams and of course Nickelback themselves all mixed up. This could be a beginning, our genre needs innovation, and that's it!

Totally crap! Sensless commercial pseudorock. I hate Chad's voice. It's very boring with a low range and no melody. Like a toothless saw blade. If you know one song of this band, then you know all. It's like a big long sausage cut in pieces given to the hungry teenies bit by bit over the years. Always the same size, the same colour, the same taste. I need this stuff like a hole in the head. Waste of time, waste of money! For free is still too expensive!

Fantastic post by Xenonmusic, very funny. But, I don't know al the top this band because arrives from a period that I don't like for hard rock music. I can say if you put togheter about 2 songs for each realese made in the time, pheraps you could make a only one decent release.

BRILLIANT 1111 I'm a 47 year old who lives & breathes 80's hard rock/AOR & anyone who is a fan of the genre should love this & if they don't then narrow minded is what springs to mind. I loved the previous 3 Nickelback albums & as soon as I heard Mutt Lange was producing this couldn't wait for it's release. Only concern was that with digital recording these days most albums sound great, so how would he make it stand out from the crowd like he did with all the albums he produced in the 80's. Needn't have worried because as soon as "Something in your mouth" nearly sent my speakers flying acroos the room I realised this was the most powerful sounding album I'd ever heard. The writing matches the production & difficult to pick a fave as all songs are of a high standard. Still, as you are all asking I will say "Something in your mouth", "Burn it to the ground", "Next go round", "Just to get high", "Shakin' hands" & "S.E.X." are never removed from my ever changing Ipod. Best album in years

sorry I just HAVE to laugh at some of these "ALTERNATIVE/NU-BREED CRAP" posts. I have only one question if you HATE these bands SOOOOOOO much WHY do you post and listen to them in the first place? If I HATE a style or a band you can bet I'd NEVER want to hear from them.

I never understood this whole trip some people have about how you must only comment on bands you like, and "if you hate them so much, why do you listen?" These comments invariably come from someone who actually likes the band in question, despite being disguised as sort of a general comment on negativity. Granted, it's become much easier to ignore the bands one doesn't like. But unless you never listened to the radio, never rode in someone else's car, never went to a restaurant or bar with a jukebox, etc., it was quite difficult to avoid Nickelback in their heyday. Why in the hell SHOULDN'T people post about bands they don't like if they feel so inclined?

I'm with Doghouse on this one. I post reviews of albums I usually own or have owned at some point. Many I like. Some I don't. I will be honest what I think about them. If I only listened to what I already knew I liked I wouldn't hear things I may grow to like or take the punt on something just because. I also like to read a range of reviews from other posters here on HH about cds I have seen listed on ebay and often it helps me make a choice to bid or not. It would suck if the only reviews on HH were from overly positive fanboys. Just my two cents.

And with that thought above, I would add this album sucks. Same old from Nickelback who are the McDonald's of Hard Rock. Sure it takes some skill to appeal to the masses like they do, but the same could be said of Taylor Swift, and I don't like her music either. Why do Nickelback suck? They are boring two-dimensional, corporate rock that is a passionless facsimile of the music I love. Just like how every now and then you think to yourself, I wouldn't mind a Big Mac, then you get one, eat it and wonder why you wanted one to start with. This is an average album by a boring band. Rated D+.
