This was by far their best cd. Every song throws you back (Bach) in your seat or off your feet. I love to jam to this one in my car, or at home, or anywhere there is a cd player. No Hard Rock collection would be complete without this cd.

The scarecrow wanted a brain, the Tin Man wanted a heart and the lion wanted courage. I wanted to have a voice like Sabastian Bach!!!Damn can that guy sing! This album proves it! "In A Darkened Room" "Wasted Time" and "Quicksand Jesus" are 3 of the most powerful ballads I have heard!!!Bach is one of the coolest rockers around! I just have 3 words for ya, GET BACK TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!

"Slave To The Grind" is the best Skid Row album, I think...! Wild, crazy, amazing, PURE ROCK! My most favourite hard rock album ever! Sebastian fuckin' rules! Just listen to "Mudkicker", "Psycho Love" and "Monkey Business"... it's SO wild, crazy and amazing! SKIDS RULES WITH BAS! Hope he will come back, coz Skid Row is not Skid Row without him. And , ah yeah - Solinger, fucker, you can kiss my ass! BAS IS THE ONE AND ONLY!

Picking up where "piece of me" and "youth gone wild" left off on their debut - this album is the very definition of hard rock. At the time this came out Guns and Roses were the defacto kings of the rock world - but Skid Row were the crowned princes awaiting top spot glory. Alas, the world moved on and internal strife tore them apart before they could achieve what they had laid the groundwork for. Sebastian is -the- best vocalist out there, Snake/Hill/Bolan are amazing. Affuso always sucks.

Definitely in my top five of all time, probably top three. Actually, my copy has "Betggar's Day," my mom wouldn't let me get the one with "Get the Fuck Out." I was ten. The heavy songs on here make you wanna go out and kill somebody, and then the ballads? I would spend hours just rewinding that tape to hear certain moments of those three ballads, and holy SHIT, the guitarwork on "In a Darkened Room" is EARTH-SHATTERING!

Was at the pawn shop last week and what did I happen to stumble upon? Slave To the Grind (with Get The Fuck Out) on cd for $4. I had the tape when it was first released but being a senior in high school who grew up on Headbangers Ball Hair Metal(with Adam, not Rikki)this album just didn't do it for me at the time. But I had read the great comments here about it and I'm glad I got it again because it does really rock! I think that's called hearing it again for the first time.

Actually SCANDINAVIA, here is an example of a band that went LESS commercial with each successive album. I think SLAP MAGGIE has a point in that PAIN/GIRLS/FEELBAD era Crue was basically a pop music creation. Watered down and pre-packaged ideal of what the record companies thought nasty music should be. Nikki knows it. Why do you think he is always trying to form a band that gets back to the SHOUT roots? Again, MAGGIE is right on. Who listens to the Crue anymore?
|
From: Scandinavia |

Hi Trick Taylor. Yes, you're right! I'd completely forgotten 'bout Skid Row...Good example! But you ask who listens to the Crue??? Only a big part of all the nostalgics in here...Face it, although there are many "new" bands posted in here it's mostly a site for all those loving the hard rock/Aor scene pre-1992 or so...I get you're point 'bout the commercial Crue albums. I don't like Theatre and Girls 'bout in my opinion Feelgood was a return to their roots (Before their debut). Sure it was..
|
From: Scandinavia |
Date: June 25, 2003 at 10:37 |
..commercial but so was the whole hardrock scene at that time...For me Motley Crue was always about Rock'n'roll and I've never really considered them as a metal band. As an album I think Feelgood is their best effort ever. It was time for them to stop fooling around on their instruments (Mick Mars in particular) and create some really good music...And they sure did!

To Trick Taylor: But as I wrote to "Slap Maggie" it's those taste differences that make it exciting...I like commercial Crue(Actually I think their debut and Feelgood were their best albums), some like "Metal" Crue and that's just fine. For me it's the other way around regarding Bon Jovi. I don't like his commercial stuff as much as I like his debut for example...Again: Taste differences...But what are you into? You don't sound to crazy 'bout ol' Crue...

Right on Trick! This album by Skids is one of my favs of all time. Here is a band, with one of the ultimate singer/screamers the genre ever witnessed, that steered away from commercial success and drove toward their own tastes. Here is a release that crossed lines and spoke words, all the while being in your face metal bordering thrash at times.Skids even walked that fine line of slowing down without throwing up a ballad.Too bad it was marketed by a monkey.See Subhuman for more.

Just how ahead of its time does this music sound? Listen to Staind, Nickleback or Linkin Park and hear the same style, sound and lyrical agression executed 10 years earlier, by a better band. Try this: make an unmarked recording of 3 sample songs and give it to your 13 year old (Linkin Park loving) nephew. Wait for him to ask you who it is and where he can get it. Fantastic...And any time you've had a shit day at work listen to the title track...a revelation.

Their debut is still my favorite, but this is one hell of a followup. The title track alone is guaranteed to get your heart pumping, but there are also some great ballads lurking around as well. "Wasted Time" & "Quicksand Jesus" are 2 of the best songs the band has ever done. While the debut pretty much sticks to the late 80s metal formula(albeit they do a better job than most), SLAVE find the Skids unafraid to experiment a bit. This disc truly stands the test of time.

From a commercial standpoint i can see why people like the first one better but for me there is just no comparision-this album defined pure hard rock when it came out. The lyrics are awesome and Sebastian's vocals are top notch. I remember the day when this came out and shortly thereafter i saw them play at Alpine Valley with G-n-R and the band was as tight as hell. Skid Row had a blast playing music and it always came across in the tunes.

I remember thinking how heavy this CD was after listening to the debut. If these guys put their shirts on, cut their hair, grew goatees and dressed like bikers, you could call 'em GODSMACK!! My point? Skid Row = GREAT BAND. If you look closely at metal today, it's there, just repackaged with a different look, and a different attitude. The days of worshipping the band as "conquering pirates" are definitely over, and the attention span of CD buyers is really short. That explains all the 1 hitters.

There are few hard rock and metal albums that can touch this one. Skid Row sound like they are playing what they really wanted to in the first place with this one, and that is pure heavy metal. This is one of those rare cd's. Not all, but almost every song is solid. I remember when this was released. It shocked the jeepers out of anyone who watched MTV or listened to a rock format station. No wonder why they toured with Metallica w/ this disc. I highly recommend a nonSkid Fan, but someone who loves edgier rock/thrash/metal to check this disc out. A rare gem. If Skid was a new band and this was released today it would still do extremely well. Song stand the test of time.

On eof the most solid hard rock CDs out there, with first class songwriting. 'In a Darkened room', 'Quicksand Jesus' and 'Wasted time' are three of the best ballads of any genre, 'Monkey business' is one of the best heavy rock songs of all time, 'Livin' on a chaingang' is also up there with the best, and the rest are great in your face hard rock / metal tracks. A brilliant CD in anyone's books.

Totally disagree here. I've had this CD since it was released and I never got into it the way i did the first one. They went for a harder, less melodic edge and I don't like that. Wasted Time is a carbon copy of I Remember You (But who cares!) And its the best song here. Get The F*ck Out was a cool fun song to play when I was a teen when my mom would bug me in my room. Slave To The Grind was the only other song I liked even a little. 3.5/10

Warhead, I don't think that Skid Row toured with Metallica. It was Pantera. They "may" have toured with Metallica, but I don't believe so, and I don't care to do a Google search on it either, which would be too easy. It would also be too easy to call Kip above an idiot, but I'll respect his opinion, even though he's wrong about Wasted Time being a carbon copy of I Remember You. I'm sure if you overlap any two songs, you can find certain beats and rhythms kind of sounding the same. So what.

Unreal melodic metal album. Bach and friends are so in synch on this one it's not funny. "Slave To The Grind", "Monkey Business" and "Psycho Love" shows the real power of this band. They really should put their feelings aside and reunite. This band was just too powerful. "Wasted Time", "In A Darkened Room" and "Quicksand Jesus" are extraordinary in their own right. Put them all together, you have a classic on your hands.

On the 'Clean' version of Slave to the Grind, "Get The Fuck Out" is substituted for "Beggars Day", which rocks just as good and hard as the other songs on the album. For those who haven't heard it, pick it up on WinMX or SoulSeek or any other P2P program.

I just recently acquired this one on CD as my cassette copy finally gave up the ghost... and y'know what? This album STILL kicks my ass up and down the street every time I hear it! Some folks like the debut better but IMHO "Slave" dusts everything else in their catalog. The entire band (especially Bach) gives the performances of their lives on this CD... a classic that everyone should own!!

I used to be one of those people who liked the debut over this one. That has changed over the years. I have the Japanese version which has both 'Get The Fuck Out' and 'Beggars Day'. I'd have to say 'Quicksand Jesus', 'In A Darkened Room', 'Slave To The Grind', and 'Monkey Business' are all stand out songs for me. 'Wasted Time' is my all time favorite track on here though. Yep, this is one asskicker of an album.

this album is the best for me, because they have my song: monkey busines, slave to the grind,in a darkened room, Quicksand Jesus. This is probably the best Hard Rock/Metal album of all time for me and also album skid row ( 1. album of skid row, where they have my beautiful and wonderful song and this is: 18 and life! This is one of the best cds I've ever purchased. I remember freaking out when I heard 'Monkey Business' for the first time...it was so fucking heavy compared to he first cd! The best cd of their career for sure! Not a bad note on this cd! The ballads are some of the finest I've ever heard. I saw them on this tour (Pantera opened) and they SLAYED the place...left it in a shambles! It's a shame they can't put aside their differences and get back together with Baz......

THE BEST. 9.5/10

Definitely not as good as the debut. The debut got me hooked from the first listen while this takes much longer to get into if it's possible. I find myself getting very bored when I listen to this but it's still OKish when the debut gets listened too much. A big disappointment.

Along with Appetite For Destruction, Slave To The Grind is probably my favorite album of all time, and had a huge influence on my musical tastes growing up.I loved the debut, too, but Slave came out and completely blew it away. To me, Slave still sounds fresh and vital, while the s/t sounds a little dated, with that reverb-y '80's drum sound, and a few songs that are a bit too cheesy. If the band's personalities hadn't gotten in the way and caused them to implode, Skid Row is one band I could see carrying on and surviving the lean years. As for this album, well shit, you get the fist-to-the-nose ccrunch of "Monkey Business" (including Baz's iconic intro scream), "The Threat," "Psycho Love" and the oft-overlooked "Livin' On A Chain Gang," and the pure thrash of the title track. And then you get these three ballads, all different from each other, but all fantastic, and each with something to say, not just throwaway, the-label-said-we-needed-a-ballad, slow-dance-with-your-chick fare.

And yeah, "Get The Fuck Out" is kinda stupid, and so is "Riot Act," an obvious nod to Rachel's love of punk, but when I play this disc, I skip neither of those tunes.

This album doesn't make any compromise at all. Either it kicks your ass with its aggressive hard n'heavy songs with street attitude or disarms you by absolute top-class ballads. This is the original so if I had to compare to something I might crossbreed Danger Danger with Judas Priest and add a few Steelheart's genes (IMO). On the other side, for me a bit aggressive with one filler (#11), but still high enough above the others, even better and more mature than the debut. 90/100.

I dunno if this one is a more "mature" album but hell yeah is "heavier" than the band's debut for sure ...my fave tracks are 3,7 & 11.The "thing" is that still misses to have the great cheesy mid tempo kinda song like the one "I Remember You".85/100

1991 produced great albums by Shotgun Messiah, Thunder, Tuff, Mr Big and others, but Skid Row's Slave to the Grind really shook up the establishment. Designed to rewite their image after being "labelled" following their debut, Skid Row released a pure metal beast. The opening one-two punch of Monkey Business and the title track is urgent and heavy as hell. There are other great tracks too like Quicksand Jesus, Psycho Love and Wasted Time. Sebastian Bach was barely holding his ego in check by this point and bad press started to plague the band. But, this is a hard masterpiece that is overlooked by snobby metal fans with narrow minds. GRADE A grind.

This one is seriously stretching the boundaries, but it's my pick for best sleaze-rock album of 1991. It fits the (admittedly nebulous) definition of sleaze-rock on attitude alone, as the music is pure metal. Just a ferocious, snarling record, whose lyrics expand on the decaying world GNR introduced us to on Appetite For Destruction, with tales of drugs, abuse, spiritual and societal malaise, murder—and trashy daytime TV. Themes that were right in step with the times, yet handled with almost none of the subtlety the emerging alt-rock scene was so lauded for, and paired with music that was like Cowboys Halfway To Hell. And yet, Scotti Hill does his best, soaring soloing ever on "In A Darkened Room." Lost to history is "Beggars Day," a damn good song that was only available on the "clean" version, in place of the blatantly misogynistic (even for its time) "Get The Fuck Out." Up to this point in my young life, hair-metal was about all I knew. I'd bought And Justice For All the previous ye

My favorite Skid Row album. The bass is funkier on this one and there's also some really cool thrash elements.
