From: Uk Geezer Date: June 7, 2001 at 1:33
Some great tracks on this album which have unforunatly been lost in a sea of hurrendous production by Roy Tomas Baker, quite how they agreed to let it go out sounding they way it does beggers belief. It is a shame because these songs in the hands of someone like Neil Kernon,(who had previously worked with the band on the "Excess All Area's' album) could have been killer aor anthems, but as it stands they promise so much and deliver so little. To sum up "great song's...awfull production"

From: WidoMakr Date: January 18, 2002 at 18:55
Geezer...maybe the years of bangin my head have dulled my senses and all but this album F'in ROCKS....again maybe its my tastes but I think the album came off fine...quote the WidoMakr....never more

From: Heatherjovi Date: February 14, 2002 at 14:53
I think this album is one of my favorite to jam to. Great vocals and well written songs.

From: bloodbreath Date: March 8, 2002 at 21:20
excellent production great quality

From: samolice Date: May 17, 2002 at 11:32
I agree Geezer, production is bad bad bad (listen to the drums!!!). It could have been a great album, it 's only a good one.

From: Desslar Date: May 18, 2002 at 15:31
Yeah, the production's a bit weak, but half the songs here are pretty good, especially 1,2, and 5. The rest is very dull. Vocals could use a little improvement.

From: tomcat Date: June 20, 2002 at 7:57
let's do it american style,,, that's what they thought.. i liked their videosong 'give it all you got' but after repeating countless times the chorus, it starts sounding carnal-esque...enjoyable cd, like 6'5 on a scale of 10 tomcat@dolfijn.nl

From: BERNARD CASARIN Date: July 26, 2002 at 23:35
GREAT SONGS, POOR PRODUCTION RATING: 7/10

From: SEBSFOX Date: September 9, 2002 at 17:16
Love this album. Especially Give It All You Got and Never Trust A Stranger.

From: Tony Date: November 30, 2002 at 12:58
If you played this for me without knowing who it is I'd swear it's a old Slaughter demo or something. VERY Slaughter-ish with traces of Def Leppard and Heavy Pettin. Pretty average songs with some great guitar work. Spent $5 on it and got my money's worth but might be one of those albums if you absolutely have to have everything remotely "hair metal" sounding to be content than this one won't dissapoint you. There's a TON of cd's on this sight I'd pick up before this one though.

From: Date: February 15, 2003 at 14:02
GENIAL!! UNO DE LOS CLASICOS PARA MI Q NUNCA MUERE. YO CRECI CON ESTA BANDA Y NUNCA LA OLVIDARE. PREFIERO EL PRIMER DISCO PERO BUENO ESTE TAMBIEN ES GENIAL, ESTE ES QUIZAS MUCHO MAS AMERICANO. SHY Y SU TONI MILLS SON LA OSTIA, PEDAZO DE VIDEOCLIP EL DEL GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT!!

From: greenmanelishi Date: February 15, 2003 at 14:03
POR CIERTO EL ANTERIOR COMENTARIO Q NO PONE NOMBRE ES EL MIO JEJEJ. POS ESO. Q LO SEPAIS!

From: Blue Tequila Date: August 2, 2003 at 12:15
If I hadn't known who this was the first time I heard it I would have bet money that it was Fastway. Tony Mills would have been a much better replacement for Dave King than Lea Hart. The songs here are all good rockers with the typical late 80's sound. One thing that annoys me on this album is the "technical glitch" midway thru the song Broken Heart. I can't believe something like that wasn't noticed and removed. Also, why the name change from Shy to Shy England? It's the smame band right?

From: Blue Tequila Date: August 2, 2003 at 12:17
...and by "smame" I do mean "same"!

From: Scandinavia Date: August 24, 2003 at 10:59
Why the hell go & make such a mediocre album when they could have had the world by its balls had they only continued in the "Excess.." vein....This doesn't suck but it ain't good either comparing it to the releases prior to this...It's that wannabe American-streetwise-hardrock-attitude that ruins this effort...The production could have been much better too...

From: Rocker76 Date: October 16, 2003 at 17:44
Found this CD in the used bin for $6. What a bargain! Great band that apparently slipped through the cracks has the 80s metal door was swingin' shut. "Never Trust a Stranger" is a great song - one of the better ones of the late 80s/early 90s hard rock bands. Definitely recommended if you see it for 6 bucks!!

From: Scandinavia Date: October 17, 2003 at 18:39
If you like this album as much as you claim you'd LOVE the "Excess All Areas" album...Try "Welcome To The Madhouse" too...Some really nice hardrock there...

From: Ritchie Date: January 30, 2004 at 8:31
Shy Great band, love thier albums. Misspent Youth suffers from awfull production. If you like shy check out shy-england.4t.com

From: dave Date: March 15, 2004 at 22:28
shy rock...in my opinion...they deserve a lot of recognition...they are 1 if not my favourite of rock bands brave the storm...now theyre should be more albums just like this 1 i havent had the chance to see them live but if i could well no hesitation there on going along im just glad theyre are such bands like shy...many? that are like this...BUT!again in my humble opinion...no 1 can touch this band and just like everyone else im entitled to my opinion!?............so anyway heres to a splendid

From: Big Papa K Date: June 14, 2004 at 21:59
Wow, did Roy Thomas Baker ever do a terrible production job on this one. Still some good tracks such as "Give It All You Got" and "Never Trust A Stranger" manage to rise this album above the awful production job. 6/10

From: TIM (2) Date: June 25, 2004 at 4:58
Really THE worst production in history, and a pretty patchy album too. The guitar sounds horrible. A bit more hard-rock than previously, but the ballads are good. Where is their recent, and superb, "Unfinished Business" album?

From: Geoff Date: September 5, 2004 at 23:40
Shame about the first 4 tracks, but once you hit track 5 you know you're in business. 'After the Love is Gone' is a great melodic rock ballad,'Never Trust a Stranger' is awesome commercial hard rock,'Broken Heart' is another gem,'When You Need Someone' is lovely again (Though a little annoying vocally) and 'Love on the Line' is a killer track too. A lot of fillers, but overall when they're good they're good.

From: karlsten Date: September 27, 2004 at 20:57
If you're still out there blue tequila the name change was because some other band had the name copyrighted b4 them, same as the deal with the 2 bands named wrathchild, one of which became wrathchild america... i don't like it either but the law is the law!

From: ALEXX GLAM Date: November 26, 2004 at 11:37

From: z4roxx Date: January 26, 2005 at 13:53
Thanks you,too for the music!!Only one thing:is there a playin'affect on track n.7?I think it's a general problem of pressin'cd,I would say somethin'about if possible, thanks. This cd is awesome as the other Shy material!Shy rule forever!!

From: Roucketas Date: March 9, 2005 at 15:47
i believe this cd is one of the most underrated ones of that year, along with Ratt's "Detonator".i believe the production and the songs are great!the reason that even Shy themselves slug this cd,is simply because instead of making them huge stars, lead the group do disbanding.i believe the new blood of that time(like Winger,Warrant,Slaughter,Firehouse etc.)was the main reason that older bands like Ratt,Dokken and Shy did not sell that much.all that before the Fucking Seattle shit arrived.R'n'R FRV

ONE OF MY FAVORITES IF YOU LIKE OBSCURE HAIR METAL BANDS, AND OF COURSE IT CAME OUT IN MY FAVORITE YEAR, 1990.

From: Axe-Machine Date: December 12, 2005 at 17:23
Terrific album, only problem with this album is the TERRIBLE production. Seriously, what the hell were MCA thinking releasing it like this. They should have brought Neil Kernon (who produced Excess All Areas) in to sort out the mess that Roy Thomas Baker got into. Burnin' Up is an absolutely amazing track, sadly lost in a horrific sea of guitars that sound like they were recorded down the phone and drum that sound like they were recorded in the garden shed. What A Shame.Could have been a classic

From: aMetalhead1966 Date: January 10, 2006 at 12:49
RTB does a great job of casterating this band. They had some good songs, the music ain't bad but it's so polished and processed, that it makes them sound like shit. Max Norman could have a better job IMO.

From: Mediaab Date: February 25, 2006 at 10:18
This album has many great great songs, e.g. Give it All You Got, Burnin' Up, After the Love is Gone, Never Trust a Stranger, Shake The Nations and When You Need Someone. Two of the best Shy choruses I've ever heard are in Broken Heart and Love On The Line - excellent songs! I'd say this album could have been as good as, or at least very close to Excess All Areas with a good production. The band wanted it re-mixed, but RTB and MCA didn't care but released the album anyway! Songs are 10/10!!

From: Mediaab Date: March 11, 2006 at 8:48
Just wanted to add that the CDs that were pressed in UK, Germany and Japan do not have that technical error in the song Broken Heart - that problem is only with the US pressing from 1990.

From: ROBERT Date: July 10, 2006 at 11:09

From: ROBERT Date: July 10, 2006 at 11:09
muy curioso en una Banda Britanica d la epoca.. Aki ya no le noto tanta influencia al Mills del otro Tony, No es mi estilo, aunke si mi epoca. 6'5 d 10!

From: Heavy.AOR Date: July 20, 2006 at 14:00
BRILLIANT 10/10.

From: Lovedrive Date: August 4, 2006 at 10:17
No está mal.. pero tampoco me mata. Me sigo quedando con el Excess all areas.

From: YIRO SEVENTH Date: August 3, 2007 at 18:44

From: rick kerch vzla Date: January 20, 2008 at 21:07

From: 123charpenay Date: July 3, 2009 at 17:11
fantastic hard melodic rock album.one of the best ever.all songs are hits.the difference between shy and shy england is the production.priority to shy england the songs are re orchestred and the production is better.on shy production is a slaugther shame on the producter he is killing an extraordinary hard rock cd s.

From: metal4life Date: December 2, 2009 at 19:25
Great songs, but the amount of reverb on the vocals and especially the snare is excessive. Never Trust the Stranger is a fantastic track.

From: pibe Date: January 22, 2011 at 4:06

LOVE ON THE LINE

From: rick kerch vzla Date: September 19, 2011 at 1:13
My comment in english(wrote one in spanish way back in 2008)...well after the highly successful "Excess All Areas"(saw the band live on that tour) came this another great record by Shy...with a more american influenced approach in the songs and with an even more outstanding Tony Mills on vocals(when not??? ) the album offers you amazing tracks such as "Burnin' Up","Money"(great!),"Never Trust A Stranger","After The Love Is Gone" & "When You Need Someone"(beautiful!!!)among others...my new rate is 85/100

From: Mace Date: January 31, 2013 at 20:52
This is the only Shy (Shy England) album I have been able to find on ebay that won't require me to sell one of my kidneys on the black market to afford... and I really like it!!! I am on the lookout for other releases.

From: 123charpenay Date: February 1, 2013 at 8:35
the best shy record.extraordinary album ,absoluty irresistible, all songs are a hit.i recommand the shy england version cause the sound is much better and the songs have been reorchestred.to mace, hello my friend,i recommand you "excess all areas" japan version with several excellent bonus tracks and "unfinished business" japan version with two super bonus tracks.forget the rest of their discography.(average).

From: Mace Date: February 4, 2013 at 21:38
G'day charpenay, thanks for the tip mate! Just got onto ebay looking for "excess all areas" again and found nothing cheaper than $40, except one new listing, a bloke has 3 new copies on sale for $6 each! I snapped one up! Bargain!

From: 123charpenay Date: February 5, 2013 at 11:10
hi mace.at this price it s a gift!!!hope you have find the version with bonus tracks."excess all areas " is an excellent a o r record.only good songs.you will take pleasure to listen this gem.

From: hair metal again Date: January 14, 2014 at 1:45
another excellent release by the mighty SHY!this time they moved to the States, jumped on the hair metal train and tried to find worldwide success!the result is fantastic with many hard rock anthems, great riffs and many hooks!the production could be much better but the music is good and the approach commercial but hard rockin!"give it all you got","love on the line","after the love is gone" are great songs indeed!in the early 90s the hair metal movement ruled the planet and SHY got a part of it!

From: edwithmj Date: January 24, 2019 at 11:33
I don't unerstand a lot of the negative opinions about this one. This is easily better than Excess All Areas, which was only slightly above average for me. We start off with a superb rocker Give It All You Got which got me hooked from the first listen. Burnin' Up and Money are two more hard rockers with super solos, After The Love Is Gone is a decent ballad with unbeatable vocals. My final pick is Broken Heart with unforgettable lyrics. The guitars and vocals are the best they'd ever been by the band. Lovely stuff.

From: titothetitan Date: March 26, 2019 at 14:27
After listening to the classic 'Excess All Areas' I immediately went after to the follow-up album, so expectations were high. So I started listening to it, but due to the horrible production, I just gave of up and barely listened to half of it. How a renowned producer like Roy Tomas Baker could produce a mess like this is beyond me. Nevertheless, search for the DEMO VERSION of the album, produced originally by the band itself. It sounds so much better.

From: 123charpenay Date: March 26, 2019 at 14:54
hello tito .i ve a question.do you know the difference between shy and shy uk?on shy uk the sound is better and the order of the songs are different.the songs seems reorchestered.i ve never know why and i ve never understand.

From: titothetitan Date: March 27, 2019 at 9:02
Hello charpenay, my copy starts with 'Burnin' Up' so I guess it's the US release titled 'Shy England' not the UK release. I'll look for this one.

From: 123charpenay Date: March 28, 2019 at 13:55
hello tito.mine shy uk starts with "give it all you got".

From: titothetitan Date: May 27, 2019 at 12:48
According to Tony Mills: "The producer was alienated, he sacked several sound engineers, he even left the recording session for two weeks. It was a disaster, a real case of too much too soon and too young to cope with it. I definetly regret doing it. It was a disaster musically, but that's about it."

From: 123charpenay Date: September 19, 2019 at 17:34
