One of the indisputable monsters of European melodic metal, this is right up there with Skagarack's debut, TNT's 'Intuition', DaVinci's 'Back in Business' and Treat's 'Dreamhunter'. If you like this release, check out a rare self-titled indie CD from a band called Sin City!

From: Larry Date: August 19, 2002 at 1:33
Break Down The Walls is a killer song!

From: JOURNEY Date: October 20, 2002 at 3:51
YEAH!!!!!!!! 'BREAK DOWN THE WALLS', 'under fire' and 'can't fight the nights' are the masterpiece songs!!!!!!

From: JOURNEY Date: December 25, 2002 at 15:43
I HAVEN'T WORDS; THIS ALBUM IS A SUPERMASTERPIECE, SUPERCLASSIC, SUPERALBUM...............

From: mutha trucka Date: January 19, 2003 at 4:04
i have the video for break down the walls on tape. its worn, but i dig it. a sexy girl comes home dressed in her private school uniform. she sneaks past her strict anti rock n roll family to her room to rock out to some shy. they bust her and lock her in a room, but she breaks down the wall of the room shes in and winds up at a shy concert. the singer gives her a kiss at the end. the girl is super hot. i wonder what she looks like now a days. never ever heard anthing else from this band.

From: ROB GARCIA Date: January 21, 2003 at 16:29
'excess all areas' is for shy what 'escape' was for journey.a real classic album in every sense....music ,vocals,songs.......you name it!.having neil kernon at the production desk also helped a lot.buy at any price!!.

From: billboardbandit Date: April 2, 2003 at 15:51
I'm confused...didn't SHY have an album, Brave The Storm?? I had the album back in the Big Hair 80's with the song, 'Hold On (To Your Love)'...isn't this the SAME group?!?

From: Scandinavia Date: June 9, 2003 at 11:44
This album is great! Highlights: 'Emergency', 'Young Heart', 'Under Fire', 'Break down the Walls' and 'Devil Woman'. If you like bands like Treat and Domain or any mid-80s popheavy band with huge keyboards and great melody you'll love this...I'd never heard this band before I found 'em in here...Great!! The vocals sometimes remind me of TNT...well, that only makes it better doeesn't it...Worth a listen!

From: JOURNEY Date: July 23, 2003 at 10:59
yes, it is a really masterpiece but, in the japanese version there other three supermasterpice: 'ONLY YOU', 'RUN FOR COVER' AND'DON'T WANNA LOSE YOUR LOVE'!!!!!!!!!!

From: Scandinavia Date: August 24, 2003 at 10:55
Where's the debut 'BRAVE THE STORM'??? Not quite as good as this one but oughta be here...

From: Paulo_Fernandes Date: August 24, 2003 at 11:31
Well.. you can always add it

From: RR-Finland Date: September 1, 2003 at 4:13
Awesome! These tracks can get you on the mood. Keyboards, guitars, catchy melodies, great screamy vocals and great outfits I mean, look that Tony Mills hair-do, man! Vocals doesn't sound so good on vinyl (in my case) but I think, in cd format this is just great. I should have one... but hey, I bought this already ones, now I can get it from internet, right? RIGHT?

From: Rafo Phoenix Date: December 23, 2003 at 1:59

...another fantastic Neil Kernon-production! Tony Mills is GOD!!!

From: Scandi Date: March 14, 2004 at 18:59
Thanks to all who took care praising this album It's very cool in the style -I agree- of the first SKAGARACK or I guess the HIROSHIMA one (the backing vocals are sometimes as weak as with the spanish..--) My favourite songs on here are EMERGENCY (cool typically 80s AOR uptempo track ), JUST LOVE ME (sigh away.. ) and DEVIL WOMAN (very cool & rough one) => So this one is & !!

This is indeed a great moment in hardrock history. Excess is one of the best albums of that beautiful era. After this LP they try to conquer states with next great jewel Misspent Youth. I don' understand why they don't achieve it ...

In one word Tremendous - One of the best Melodic rock albums to come from the UK. Enough said.

One of the best Melodic Rockalbums of the 80's!

From: Big Papa K Date: June 14, 2004 at 22:03
The best Shy album out there. The songwriting is consistent throughout and the production is fantastic. 'Break Down The Walls' and 'Can't Fight the Nights' are the tops. 8/10

From: Geoff Date: September 6, 2004 at 1:59
Excellent melodic rock / AOR release. 'Emergency' is awesome, and I love the cover of 'Devil woman', but I don't believe there is much wrong with this one at all. I personally wonder why people mention FM's debut as a classic without mention of this as I feel they are of similar style, but I much prefer this one. Awesome release.

From: Marcio Tex Date: October 13, 2004 at 8:27
it's an awesome album really!! i miss music like that!! tony mills rulezzzzzz!!

ONE OF THE BEST AOR CD I EVER HEAR ALL THE TRACKS ARE KILLER,I LOVE IT BUT MY GIRLFRIEND IS ADDICTED TO IT

From: Kim HP Date: December 27, 2004 at 8:30
To me it doesn't get any better than this when it comes to keyboard driven AOR/ melodic hard rock. 'Excess All Areas' is one of my all-time favourites and one I still play on a regular basis. Songs like 'Young Heart' , 'Just Love Me' and 'Break Down the Walls' are just outstanding. Easily a 10

From: z4roxx Date: December 28, 2004 at 20:02
I THINK THE BEST AOR CD EVER HEARD,TEARS FALLIN'DOWN FOREVER WITH THESE CD!!!INCREDIBLE ABSOLUTE MEGAMASTERPIECE....

From: Richard U.K. Date: January 9, 2005 at 12:11
Excess All Areas is simply an AOR classic. From fast uptempo songs 'Emergency' to 'Break Down The Walls' ,With Tony Mills vocals soaring and Steve Harris superb guitar work - with catchy choruses and plenty of energy - This is 80's AOR at it's best. ;Listened to all these tunes live at The Marquee in 87/88 - London and they are even better live. All the best and try my website at AOROCK.com for a history of the band inlcuding an Excess All Areas section - Richard U.K.

From: Deenfan Date: January 19, 2005 at 2:49
The fact that I didn't hear this until christmas 2004 is a proof of how fucked up a job the record company did way back then. How could they ever expect to reach just anyone, which you need to do to get BonJovi big, when they didn't reach me? -I'd probably faint with pleasure if I heard it in 1987! It's still amazing, and I'm happy to finally have caught up with the band. Tony Mills is one of the greatest singers to walk this earth. Control, my friends! High note: A above top C = Midnight (CG)!!

From: z4roxx Date: January 19, 2005 at 18:27
Yes,I agree that T.Mills in one of the best vox and this one is maybe a masterpiece that few will be repeat...but'welcome to madhouse',what a killer release!Yes,not in the Shy's style but I've heard few glam cd's better than this one...It's inevitable, when a band has the class, every work is fantastic and amazing...

From: Nanteau Date: February 6, 2005 at 13:16
Really can't believe why there's been such an 'hype' about SHY. I bought this one for the many guys here and wherever who like and recommend this album. For my taste it's this: The first track is really good, kind of 'killer'. But the rest --I don't know; the ballad ('When the love is over') is mediocre and 'Devil woman', well, talk about something other.. It's NOT an album you NEED like it's often told about this one. For me: 7/10 at best

From: Tormentor77 Date: June 17, 2005 at 1:22
Hi all! Does anybody have albums of these guys in mp3 or something like that. It's absolutely impossible to find their CDs over here in Russia. I've managed to get only Welcome to the Madhose and Sunset and Vine. Nothing more It looks like there are only a couple of their fans over here. Ready to share my files as well. Thanks! A great album to say the very least. Can't Fight The Nights, Emergency, Break Down The Walls, Young Heart and Telephone are amazing tracks, and certainly the best thing Shy ever recorded. Cant believe RCA dropped them after this record. Shame, as the band moved to MCA and hired a producer who effectively ruined what was looking like a promising band. Good job they left us this gem, and even better that they recorded something good again recently with Unfinished Business. This is a true classic.

From: SCANDI Date: December 13, 2005 at 14:30
Well, I have to rearange my first comment about this one. It's still not bad at all (though they are better; 'Emergency' is killer) but you can't listen to this one in a raw. I like high pitched voices but this one is kind of squeaky. 7,5/10

From: Heavy.AOR Date: July 20, 2006 at 13:59
BRILLIANT 10/10.I no love mark 'Classic' yes this is youre classic you love it but This is best album Forever. Like a TNT-Intuition.

From: Chris_GR_Aor Date: December 7, 2006 at 6:56

his is a great cd, voice similar to tony from tnt but thtas where it ends im a fan of both bands but both sound different also listen to hunter off brave the storm great song started it all for me as a shy fan

From: metalhead4life Date: June 24, 2007 at 14:26
9.86/10!?! -I don't know about that but it is a pretty good one to own if you like melodic AOR/Glam Rock with high pitched vocals, keyboards, and pretty good guitar. Has some cool tunes on it but has some that fall short. Tony Mills vocals can get a little annoying at times but don't get me wrong he's a pretty good singer. Emergency is my favorite track and also 1, 3, 5, and 6 as listed here are good too. I would give this a 7.5/10. This is worth picking up but there are better ones out there.

From: crashdive Date: October 8, 2007 at 14:57
Great songs and production, but Mills voice sounds too gay for my taste and ruins it all.

From: cacophony Date: November 12, 2007 at 6:45

Great album in all aspects!!!...songwriting and composition...i remember buying this album just when it came out (i have it on lp) and then caught them live during this Tour at the famous Marquee venue (England)...Tony Mills was drinking some beers at the little bar inside the venue when the opening act was performing...whatta humble guy... and tall indeed!!!.well songs here are timeless in the melodic HR field or Hard AOR...the opener "Break Down The Walls" (a blast, just that!),"Emergency" (catchy chorus),"Young Heart"(remember it was a hit back then)"Just Love Me"(one of the most beautiful ballads ever and overall Mr Mills passionate voice)"Can't Fight The Nights"(wonderful)...well if you consider yourself a lover of good music, then buy this one undoubtebly!!!...95/100

From: gregmanimal Date: December 10, 2011 at 8:14
This album has it all: sensational melodies, unique power, soaring vocals, great hooks, sentimental moments. RIP Steve Harris and thanx for making one of the most exciting melodic heavy hard Rock LPs of all time!

From: 123charpenay Date: May 15, 2013 at 12:50

excellent release as usual by the mighty SHY back in a year that the hard rock genre exploded!nothin bad here ,this release is a classic with songs like "cant fight the nights","break down the walls","just love me"!essential

From: Monzter Date: October 8, 2016 at 3:42
One of the best albums, packed full of catchy songs with big melodies. Music does not get any better than this. 97/100

From: titothetitan Date: November 14, 2017 at 14:24
I liked it but the choruses are a bit tiring and repetitive.

From: titothetitan Date: March 21, 2019 at 13:11
Surprisingly the demo version to these supposedly 'highly pollished' sounds so much better than the final product.

From: CC Date: September 18, 2019 at 22:07
Just listening to this again after the sad death today of Tony Mills, and came here to read some of the comments. One thing I noticed in one comment that the record company screwed these guys over with a lack of promotion, and while I do not disagree with that statement, I also blame the UK music press as well. Before I ever bought a Shy album (Misspent was the first one I picked up) I kinda avoided them because of Kerrang who had so called professional contributors in that rag call this band "Shyte". Well I can say the more apt terminology would be to call Kerrang by its true name, Kerrap. Shy should have had more success back in the day and Kerrap should have been the one to suffer. RIP Tony.
