right now i'm undecided if i'm going to buy this for 3 new songs. I have most of the songs anyway but not all on cd so i just might. I like the song selection but i really could do without the three live songs. throw in a Cherone song. they did have one good song from VHIII and throw in a couple different songs. Just get rid of those three live songs.

From: AOR freaky Date: July 25, 2004 at 6:33
What should we think of this one. Only three new songs, which are not bad, but is that enoughe to buy this ? ! The rest is on their remastered CD's or on their other compilation ! So why release this ? I'm afraid it's only for the money. Hope to see Van Halen back with an entire new CD ! That's what the fans really want !!!

From: koogles Date: July 25, 2004 at 15:41
Let's face it: Van Halen have been historically bad in the value-for-the-money dept. Bad enough that they made us pay for albums that clocked in under 30 minutes (Diver Down, etc.) in the first place. Now we have to pay for the music all over again: just to get 3 new songs. The cropped ending of "Finish What You Started" is ironic: it DOESN'T finish what it starts, ranking right up there with Mike Reno's "Affection" as worst edit of 2004!! The 3 live tracks should have been replaced by...

From: koogles Date: July 25, 2004 at 15:47
"Summer Nights", "Mean Streets" and "Little Guitars". The latter was the only decent original on "Diver Down" and it's nowhere to be found on this "best of". Other decent songs that aren't here include "Feel Your Love Tonight", "Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do", "Cabo Wabo", "The Dream is Over", "Drop Dead Legs" and "So This Is Love". Add it all up and the songs on Volume 1 should have been omitted, and this should have been simply sold as a single disc called Volume 2.

From: Fog-hat Date: July 26, 2004 at 12:08
3 new songs I can live without. A single disc selling for $11.99 I may have bought, but not a double disc at $18.99. I consider it an insult to me, a fan since the beginning to be forced to pay out a lot of money for stuff I already have. Shame on the filthy rich Van Halen boys!

From: Jack Secret Date: August 2, 2004 at 16:25
There are some omissions from this collection. They really could have thrown a Cherone tune on there and they forgot, I guess, that all the piano pinging before "not enough" was treated as a seperate track on Balance. Maybe they're just testing the waters with the new best of and tour to see how they stand in this new day and age. Ain't it funny that both best of's have had a screw-up (the first pressing of Volume 1 had a different mix of "runnin' with the devil"). Why also didn't mike play?

From: Dennis Clark Date: August 6, 2004 at 13:23
Where is "Humans Being", "Me Wise Magic", "Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do" ? These singles reached the no.1 spot on Billboard's Modern Rock charts. Greatest hits eh? I'm a solid VH fan, but just as I keep on telling my friends, NEVER TRUST A GREATEST HITS.

From: MelodicBoy Date: August 10, 2004 at 2:40
Have to agree with many of the above sentiments. Koogle absolutely nailed some GREAT tunes that should be on here. Another point of contention I have is the absolutely fucking ridiculous RUNAROUND. One of the worst tracks from F.U.C.K., I absolutely cringe when I hear that piece crap come on. Sammy isn't often known for his deep lyrics, but these are the absolute worst-Here we go round and round and round, here we go round and round and round, she's giving me the runaround. ??? What the fuck???

From: MelodicBoy Date: August 10, 2004 at 2:43
And please, people, NO tracks from the travesty that was VHIII. The best track on that waste of time isn't in the top 5 on any other VH disc. NO CHERONE!!!

From: uusiolli Date: August 15, 2004 at 18:00
Why they didn't do us favor and put one cd of Van Halen and one cd of Van Hagar bugs me. Now I have to skip songs every now and then. Then on those live recordings they sound like a cover band. Sammy just sings through those songs, no emotion. There's two different bands here. One rocks and one is just plain AOR. Mixing those two (live recordings) sounds awful. 7/10. The best of these songs are still excellent.

From: GlennVanWiddle Date: August 17, 2004 at 17:25
Quite like 'It's About Time', but 'Up For Breakfast' is just embarrassing. Quite a good compilation, but only one track from 'Fair Warning' is a travesty. Do we really need the three live tracks at the end which (possibly excepting Jump) are way inferior to the Roth versions? 'Feels So Good' and 'Runaround' etc could easily be dumped. And where's 'Mean Street', 'Women in Love', 'On Fire' etc etc...(I could go on for hours...)

From: Tony Date: September 5, 2004 at 20:33
First off to my ears anyways I don't even compare Roth/Hagar era Van Halen. Both versions great for what they were!! That being said when you listen to this disc the band with Roth sounded like a band who didn't care what you thought, "We're gonna party and get laid, you coming or not?". Sided next to the Hagar tunes VH with Hagar comes across like a band with wives & mortages,"We're going to somewhat get in trouble, bring permission slips and a sandwich". Great disc for what it is.

From: holyroller Date: October 11, 2004 at 14:24
This is about as good a VH compilation as you're going to get. I think "It's About Time" and "Up For Breakfast" are pretty damn good, but "Learning To See" sounds like two songs bumped together; more like something Hagar would do on his own. I'm a bigger Hagar fan than Dave, btw. Having said that, I don't think Sammy has any business singing the old tunes; only Dave could sing them right (although Mike does a good job on "Somebody Get Me A Doctor"), he owned those songs. When he first joined the

...band they pretty much had to I guess. Really though, the three live tunes are unnecessary. My picks? "Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do", "Mean Street", and "Humans Being." I'm just glad Sam's back, looking forward to an all-new album from the boys.

From: Calogero Date: November 14, 2004 at 7:11
VAN HALEN died the day Dave quit. VAN HAGAR was decent till Sammy quit. VAN CHERONE was a bad joke. Now they woke up the dead body for a summer tour & doble greatest hits cd? They're just ripping off. Why donīt the sisters just call Dave & bring VAN HALEN back again?

From: Propane Date: December 3, 2004 at 16:44
Calogero has it right, but I think they should throw in the towel while they still have a fan base (God only knows how).

From: StrungOut Date: January 17, 2005 at 16:35
Let's put it this way: when Roth is a joke, Van Halen is still a ROCK BAND.This should give us a clue of WHO is the HEART of Van Halen:Mr Edward Van Halen. Plain and simple.Period.

From: Blaster Date: May 28, 2005 at 0:29
This compilation is pretty good, but the abscence of the three aforementioned hits and Ice Cream Man is inexcusable. I dont know what the hell the band was thinking with the three live tracks at the end, as if Sammy made the band better. The only live track that wouldve been appropriate would be their hit cover of Wont Get Fooled again or a lost Dave song. This album is actually a decent introduction to VH, It's About Time is decent but the other new songs are tuneless and bland. A mixed bag.

From: juan carlos Date: January 5, 2009 at 14:29
Yeah mate, Pretty Good Compilation! but as you said, some tracks has been omitted, and new tracks are just ok and average, but the rest is classic. Yep, i also wouldīve omitted the live tracks. If you donīt have nothing about VH, you can go for this one. 9/10

From: pie75 Date: August 22, 2010 at 5:15
a good compilation the new songs are ok but still some great songs left out everyone thought after this that a full blooded reunion with sammy was gonna happen but never did sammy is on record as saying when he came back eddie was a mess and that they were past it and he will never go back again dave will because he's desperate no michael anthony anymore either eddie has his son wolfgang that's as embarresing as his name what a shame about such a great band sad even

From: hair metal again Date: February 12, 2016 at 9:53
