Best Whitesnake-record with the master himself: Steve Vai!

From: SnakeFan Date: September 12, 2001 at 8:54
You're cracked if you think this is the best WS record! S/T and Slide It In are both much better! This one isn't bad, though. Just not their best.

From: WhiteLion Date: September 20, 2001 at 9:15
Faster, stronger and more vivid then the 1987 album. He sings better here too Damn this album is good. Favourites are Wings of the Storm, Sailing Ships and the rest!

From: Steve T Date: March 1, 2002 at 11:59
The best Whitesnake album??? You have GOT to be kidding me. Try the back catalogue and understand that Whitesnake were a good band LONG before 1987. Steve Vai was the final nail in the coffin.....apart from his solo stuff he is the kiss of death to any band he joins. He MURDERED this album and just ripped all the soul out of the band. He should be shot for his work on Fool For Your Loving. THE most sterile and antiseptic guitarist I have ever heard....he had no place in the band.

From: Andre Date: May 21, 2002 at 11:44
Hi Steve, now in your territory, let me put some lines for Mr.Coverdale.I liked this record, beautiful ballads but too corporate rock. There are good hard driving tunes like 'Wings',but this effort sounds like a 1987 part 2.I understand that in the 80's ,become heavier was a natural path for the Snake.I don't want to be radical like my fellow Steve here, you have to be at least a pro like Dave to criticize him. I also think that Vai don't fit in the band.He was hired for the record.79 out of 10

From: ThunderDan Date: June 27, 2002 at 21:56
I enjoyed this album, although I agree that this isn't their best effort. Vai's playing is blistering, the 2 hit ballads are great, and 'Fool...' sounds better on this CD. Their S/T CD will always be their best, by far.

From: Paolo Date: July 12, 2002 at 7:33
great hard rock of the 80's,songs like 'Wings of the storm'and'Judgment day' are really memorable! And what about'Sailing ships'?it's one of the best ballads ever

From: Altay Date: August 12, 2002 at 18:13
ý think this is not their best for sure but i enjoy this one.i don't like stevei's sound and musical way,he also plays ok. on this album, this version of 'fool for your lovin''is better. by the way my favourite track is 'slow poke music'very catchy song.i love this album like ý do the other snakes.

From: Noro Date: August 19, 2002 at 18:33
Listen to 'Fool for Your Loving' from 1980 album, and you'll understand that new 'Whitesnake' tastes like a pop-rock band but not the hard rock. Check out the compression and speed of the song.....

From: Date: August 20, 2002 at 18:27
this album is good, but not their best. has some high points, but a little 'too perfect,' i.e. Vai's playing. yeah, we know the guy is a guitar god, but i liken his playing to that of a programed computer sound - flawless and awesome, but 'souless.' he may be a virtuoso, but can't seem to write an original, down to earth, cool riff to save his life. c'mon, when you think of your favorite songs, are they because the 'solo is so great,' or the songs riff itself just rocks? think about it.

From: nitrodoll1974 Date: August 20, 2002 at 18:39
i remember being totally impressed by the songs 'now you're gone' and wings of the storm with that amazing guitarsolo...those were the days my friends... nitrodoll1974@hotmail.com

From: Rockforever Date: August 23, 2002 at 8:22
This is an underrated record. No,its not as good as 1987 or SlideItIn,no Steve Vai's guitar style is not in tune with the bluesy Snake tradition, and yes there are a couple of real clunkers on the album (but then again didn't most Snake albums have one;eg.'Children of the Night'),but it is a good album, much better than most of the bands peers.Vai may not be bluesy but his technique really does take the songs to new places. Also, its great to hear Tommy Aldridge on a Snake record.

From: Rockforever Date: August 23, 2002 at 8:30
I just want to highlight some errors made by other people. The writer who says Steve Vai is unable to write an original riff obviously doesn't know that Steve didn't contribute any writing to the album. The riffs were all written by Adrian Vandenberg (except Fool... of course) who wasd due to play on the album but broke his hand I think. Vai stepped in and played superbly, replacing the blues with his highly technical style.Considering he was brought in just to play, pretty damn good I think.

From: Baris Date: September 12, 2002 at 3:40
Whitesnake rules... A perfect balanced one. The best aspect of this album is that despite a guitar guru takes place, there are not too long unnecessary thinny solos. It feels like while recording David has told Vai 'Look at me man! you can be here but this my place, so don't make too much noise here, Got it?' and Vai with acceptance has moved his head up and down. You feel this scene while listening. Where Vai tries to start ruling, immediately David comes into the picture...

From: dusty Date: January 20, 2003 at 11:41
I think this isn't a very bad album. It's just bad Adrian couldn't play. Don't get me wrong, Steve Vai is a good player, but way too technical, certainly for a whitesnake album. Whitesnake without bluesy guitarplay just ain't whitesnake. I don't understand why Steve didn't play like he played with David Lee Roth. That stuff is very bluesy. The technical stuff is great for a solo record (For the love of God just rulz!) but not for a hard rock album. (btw, the title track is cool)

From: Evandro Date: April 17, 2003 at 17:14
I like a lot this album .. my only complain is sometimes the Guitar work seems Robotic, without emotion .. i think this is album have their great moments .. like the ballads .. and some rockers .. i like a lot Slow Poke Music .. this song have a great riff .. another highlight is ... Fool of your loving.. i liked a lot this version ...

From: Dusty Date: April 25, 2003 at 9:56
very robotic guitarplay indeed. you should check out 'eat em and smile' from David Lee Roth, steve's guitarplay there is great. He should have played in the same bluesy way on this record. Still, there are some good songs here. I like the title track very much.

From: byrdman69 Date: June 12, 2003 at 16:06
This effort by Whitesnake is fair at best. It just doesnt do it for me. Something missing here. Steve Vai is a great guitar player, but the styles here dont fit. The best Whitesnake c.d is Slide It In! It rocks from start to finish..................

From: Rycheage Date: June 24, 2003 at 20:49
This CD is real good but pales in comparison to the 'Whitesnake' CD. It still has 'Fool For Your Loving' (which kicks ass live I might add) and the power ballad 'The Deeper The Love'. 'Sailing Ships' is a beaut also. Recommended.

From: some guy Date: January 29, 2004 at 2:29
ok, all of you badmouthing this album are insane. So what if steve is too perfect. ITS WHITESNAKE, best bank of all time.

From: Impaler Date: February 22, 2004 at 11:30
A good album, not their best and a little disappointing as I expected more with the addition of Vai, Sarzo & Aldridge, I guess too much talent and not as much chemistry. Definitely a must still especially since you can pick it up pretty cheap.

From: AORster Date: April 8, 2004 at 20:44
Slightly better than '1987' but still far from the earlier albums imo. One really good track, Now You're Gone, and an OK 'cover' of Fool For You're Loving that's it. 6/10

From: pozermaniac Date: May 3, 2004 at 14:20
this smells like holy shit!stupid!A dozen of cheap songs!WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY NOW!STEVE VAI what the fuck are you doin around here man!!!this is a super album only for Steve Vai.Great uitar work!

From: jack Date: May 19, 2004 at 5:59
This album is one of the best hard rock/metal album in the late 80's. Slip of the tongue and judgement day is probably the most heaviest of all whitesnake songs along with still of the night. But slip of the tongue in my opinion is in some sense(guitar and drum pounding)better than still of the night. Now your gone is a good ballad although its not evenhalf as good as i remember you by skid row. I'LL PUT THIS ALBUM 2nd best behind skid row of all the hard rock/metal album produced in 1989.

From: pozermaniac Date: May 19, 2004 at 18:29
What a joke!Take a listen to Tesla's Great Radio Controvercy!

From: tutu Date: May 19, 2004 at 18:51
it is a good album...only that it is not whitesnake..that's the point.and pozermaniac, you my friend, stop comparing different things..there is nothing ccommon between tesla and whitesnake.u are a ball-breaker man, what else do you wanna hear? u are talking about tesla in a whitesnake link.get a grip!!!!

From: jack Date: May 20, 2004 at 0:50
Tesla's Great Radio Controversy is one of my favourite hard rock/metal album and i dig the album very much but i am not really sure it is as good as slip of the tongue!Anyway, pozermaniac, your name may be maniac but you sure got a great taste in music!

From: kostasraskolni Date: May 21, 2004 at 2:57
You guys got a taste of irony in your speech i think so.Let's play this game:he is a serial maniac,i am the raskolnikof stuff, you are Jack the ripper, tutu the assasin. We are criminals, don't you know that?Anyway,Slip of the tongue is an easy-listenining cd.But Steve Vai you're just great!

From: pozermaniac Date: June 1, 2004 at 19:22
This album is crap!!!Coverdale always wanted to stole a little piece of Bon Jovi or Tesla's glory!Thats why he changed his music! No way man!80s reall HARD ROCK was America's Job!! Im not gonna say anything about Great Radio Controvercy...cause History knows! But Jack...Take a a listen to XYZ's first album! And then you will find the man with the GREAT VOICE!And you will forget your poor David! You wanna try my taste again?

From: Elton Braga Date: June 2, 2004 at 15:16
Coverdale got a fantastic line-up in this album and they didn´t let the fans down, not at all. 2 monster guitarists, and 2 great musicians who put the house down with songs like Wings Of The Storm, Fool For Your Loving, Now You´re Gone and the best song I ever heard from them, The Deeper The Love!

From: Big Papa K Date: June 30, 2004 at 17:06
This is a let down from the last album. It starts off great with the first four songs, but the second half is dissapointing with only 'Judgement Day' and 'The Deeper The Love' sticking out. This albums is more keyboard heavy than the last, but is also heavier in certain areas. 7/10

From: Desslar Date: July 3, 2004 at 3:52
A big step down from the previous album. Too poppy and sterile. Songs like Slow Poke Music are just embarrassingly ridiculous. Now You're Gone and Judgement Day are great though.

From: Uusiolli Date: August 5, 2004 at 19:10
A perfect example that the even the best guitarplayer can do harm for a band. I just love Steve Vai's playing everywhere else, but he was not the right guy for Whitesnake. I'm quite sure even Coverdale and Vai admit it now. 6/10

From: Geoff Date: August 17, 2004 at 1:24
Again I feel like an immense pooofter, taking no note of any Whitesnake releases before 1987 and loving mostly off this album the ballads. 'Fool for your loving' is great, but 'Now you're gone' and 'The deeper the love' are just superb songs to these ears! What a poof, hey! Oh well, I do love the hard rockers too and overall this is another monster slice of heavy rock. Great stuff.

From: Ratt72 Date: September 5, 2004 at 2:27
It's not a bad album,But there's no chemistry between Coverdale and Vai,the both are completely lost, and some songs written by Vandenberg, are sounding like Van Halen B-side material.

From: Ratt72 Date: September 5, 2004 at 2:43
Pozermaniac, you make me laugh!!!Go back to your Barbie dolls, kid. Hard rock its an american ivention?Do you know what band first named as a Hard Rock band?of course not!!!it's Led Zeppelin, an english band, the same country where bands like UFO,Deep Purple,AC/DC,Def Leppard,Black Sabbath and many others came from, just for a record the original Whitesnake line up were british.

From: Dave Date: September 5, 2004 at 7:12
Only a fool would criticise this album , if it did not follow 1987 it would be regarded as a classic which i still think it is.I would also agree with Ratt72 that the English lay home to the true Hard Rock !!!!

From: Adam (Poland) Date: September 27, 2004 at 14:50
Great Album. S.Vai gave this album a lot fresh air in Whitesnake's music. Beautiful sound from outern space yeahhI think that '1987' is better but this abum is diamond too. For Me 9,5/10

From: Propane Date: December 1, 2004 at 21:45
Excellent album due to good song writing and the addition of Aldridge and Sarzo. Vai I like, but a bit too clean for this band. Needed to raunch it up a bit. He could have just watched Rudy and taken lessons. No offense to anyone though, I like this one a lot.

From: lduarte Date: January 7, 2005 at 22:05
It´s hard to do it twice but some people can , i never thought that after 1987 Coverdale could make another record like this one , i´m a Sykes fan but i must admit that Vai realy is the best rock guitar player i´ve ever seen , this is a classic no doubt. If it´s better than 1987 i dont know , some people say it is , i do not .Still my 2nd favourite album ever

From: pozermaniac Date: January 20, 2005 at 13:06
To Ratt 72:Learn to read first, and then come back here!

From: Remastered Reason Date: January 19, 2006 at 0:00
Steve Vai is quite a showman on guitar here but lacks some of the chmistry with Coverdale, to which Sykes surely had. However, again the ballads chime in well, while the rockers are quite not up to par as on their last effort. Still a highlight in the bands career with a handful of memorable tracks & worth a spin now & again.

From: lduarte Date: February 22, 2006 at 18:12
One of my favourite off all time 10/10.A dream line up with Coverdale , Vai and Aldridge . Filled with great tunes , i love the remake of fool for your loving , now you´re gone , wings of the storm, the deeper the love , judgement day and sailing ships (amazing guitar work on this one). If anyone wishes to trade opinions email me at luis73@netcabo.pt

From: Chad Date: July 7, 2006 at 1:45
Could David Coverdale sing the phone book and make it marketable? Yes. Man, he has a great voice. Just check out the Live In the Still of the Night DVD. The man can sing and he does so on this album. Judgement Day, Fool for Your Loving and Now You're Gone are the standouts but not the only good ones. This album is full of excellence. Check it out. Recommended and damn, you should have it in your collection.

From: Darkstorm Date: March 4, 2007 at 13:08
I know most people are dissapointed at the more commercial direction here, but i'm not one of them. The title track has a killer intro and flawless blending of keyboards and guitars, Cheap And Nasty is a great cock-rocker with ridiculous lyrics, and then there's the new version of Fool For Your Loving which I prefer over the orginal because of the slightly more depressing tone, then comes the even more depressing Now You're Gone with it's spine-chilling organ-like intro, then the explosive Kitten's

From: edwithmj Date: July 12, 2009 at 12:56
Not as good as the earlier stuff. This album has a mix of a few brilliant songs with mostly average stuff. Steve Vai took over on guitar here after Vandenberg hurt his wrist and I can only imagine how much better this album would've been if Vandenberg had played on it instead. He co wrote all the songs with his style in mind but credit to Vai for filling in and doing a decent enough job. Now You're Gone, Cheap An' Nasty and Judgment Day are all good enough but the best song on here which showcases Coverdale's full vocal talent is Deeper The Love. This song and Now You're Gone make up for the medicority of this album.

From: edwithmj Date: July 12, 2009 at 13:05
Oh and this album and anything Coverdale has ever done is 1000 times better than anything Tesla or Jeff Keith ever did.

From: pie75 Date: August 22, 2010 at 8:44
ratt 72 you're close to the mark a lot of the great rock bands are from england but let me tell you my friend AC/DC ISN'T!!!! they are australian band but anyway the review is of this album the title track, fool for for your lovin',now your gone, the deeper the love, judgement day and sailing ships make this album worthwhile not as good as 1987 but a good addition

AC/DC are always said to be an Aussie band, but Bon Scott & both the Young brothers are officially Scottish and bass player Cliff Williams is English. The only born Aussie is drummer Phil Rudd, so ratt72 wasn't so off the mark

From: Wardy Date: December 20, 2010 at 7:04
Gonna duck and jump right in here, gotta admit to Slip being my favorite Snake yikes! Regardless of the wonderful back catalog including of course 87, it was this album here that truly put the power in the WS name. Knowing even then and still now that this album was plagued by too much cockrock and bubblegum lyrics, tracks such as Cheap and Kittens Got Claws prime examples, there was however real depth and scope hidden behind some of these tracks. Sure Vai brings us an alternate Whitesnake, but was relative for the times. With Vai peaking, his dressings of guitar wank suited quite well for 89. Anyways the opening title track is savage and its solo melodicrock sublime, Wings of the Storm and Sailing Ships were deep and thoughtful, tremendous pieces, Judgment Day gave Zep the finger and works a treat, Deeper the Love stunning balladry and there's plenty more to love about this album. Slip was for its time stunning. One might skip a few tracks, bute the remainder still stands today!

From: Animal! Date: January 31, 2011 at 14:29
This has what I call a few "hidden gems" in it. Meaning that over time I will pull this out and give it a listen and go "where did this track come from?" Its almost like they put a mew song in it that just blows me away.A lot of Whitesnake albums do this to me.

From: hair metal again Date: June 2, 2011 at 3:27
hair metal masterpiece by the SNAKE back in 89.i really enjoyed watching the "fool for your loving " video at MTV as a kid.i think that everybody jumped on the crazy hair metal train of that era and that this was the greatest time for hard rock history.no need to say much ,this is great stuff."the deeper the love" is one of the best songs ever written!hard rock perfection is what you get

From: newscandi Date: October 23, 2011 at 12:01
I go with many even though I'm not favourize the bluesy material. But this one is too hard rock orientated. The only good song here is, again as many say, "Judgement day". Maybe "Sailing ships" is not too bad (those are the only two songs I hear Coverdale's originally soulful voice) & "Wings of the storm" for its technical parts. But that's it.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: October 8, 2012 at 15:51
The band tries to recreate 1987 and keep the gravy train rolling, repeating many of the tricks that seemingly made that album such a hit. There's another video with Tawny Kitaen in a bubble bath, there's a re-worked version of an old 'Snake song, even more keyboards, and a couple tries at Zep-lite. The one thing they mostly forgot was the heaviness. Vai, whatever his talents as a shredder, just doesn't have that crushingly heavy guitar sound John Sykes had. COverdale's voice is still unmistakable, and the hooks and melodies are still there, but the overall lightness is a disappointment, and in the end, the gamble really didn't pay off, as Slip Of The Tongue sold and respectably, but nowhere near the heights of 1987, and the band was broken up within a year of its release.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: October 8, 2012 at 15:52
Oh, and once again, just like Slide It In and 1987, the 20th-anniversary edition puts the tracks in a new running order.

From: Ydol eM Date: April 9, 2015 at 18:27
Yeah, 1987 part 2, but in spite of this my most favourite Whitesnake. A bit more polished (in the good sense of a word) hard rock but very precisely played, the cooperation between Vai and Coverdale is perfect and the rhythm section alike. I regard this album almost thorough in its work (except for too professional,IMO). For those who like House Of Lords or Blue Murder required listening. 90/100.

From: tomdwa Date: April 21, 2020 at 19:41
I actually think this one surpasses their 1987 success album, thanks to stronger songwriting (Now you're gone, Judgment day, Sailing ships, the good remake of Fool for your loving, and the fantastic The deeper the love), and thanks to the contribution of guitar wizzard Steve Vai, who does an amazing job here without desecrating the Whitesnake sound. He does his thing (boy, he does), and adds depth and variety to each song.

From: Rockhunter666 Date: July 28, 2021 at 6:14
Funny thing is I don’t know why I get this album so late, since I’ve been collecting hard rock/ metal CDs for long time. I bought cassette version of this album yesterday. After I put the cassette in my Sony Walkman and press play button, man… this sounds GREAT for something cost $1.99 in good condition. Both David and Steve has master levels performing here. 8.8 out of 10. If you don’t have it already, buy it now!

From: guitarrizer Date: July 30, 2021 at 8:53
This is one of the ultimate hard rock releases in my opinion. It doesn't sound like classic Whitesnake albums of course but it doesn't matter. It's excellent anyway.

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: April 1, 2022 at 15:20
Somehow, I put Slip of the Tongue in the same category as Def Leppard's Adrenalize. It's a lightweight follow-up to a massive, era-defining hit, that just didn't hit as hard or stick as long. But the music is sugary fun and makes you think of sunny days now long gone. Tommy Aldridge's drums dominate, while Steve Vai's guitars sound thin and pushed to the background, which is not really addressed in any of the remastered versions. That really robs the album of its teeth. David Coverdale, ever the roguee, offers some of his most lascivious lines on "Cheap An' Nasty," "Slow Poke Music" and "Kitten's Got Claws" (heard him intro the latter on Hair Nation the other day, and he sounded a bit sheepish). "Judgment Day" is the heaviest song here, in a plodding, Zeppy way that almost kills the party vibe, as does the melodramatic closer "Sailing Ships." I think this was the kind of album that guys would play for their non-rocker girlfriends. Not without its charms' but I really have to be in the
